Hypothetical

Your in the selection committee this week leading up to the tigers match. Ross wants some excitement to be injected in a team that looked a little tired and flat....

so he turns to you and asks.... who do you think we should pick?

My suggestion is in one of three areas we need to improve on in the second half of the year:

Second ruck: Gardiner and king are not certainties for the rest of the year. Big mac is struggling to make an impact. Perhaps the raw stanely?

Third forward: lynch got 17 posies in th forward line and kicked three goals to get in the best. Smart operator and a first round pick.

midfield deth: jack steven is a good nuget who likes finding the hard ball and can kick goals.

thoughts?

Note: I'm not asking for who to drop, not suggesting that this WOULD happen, could happen or will happen. I am also not suggesting that we do need some younger playes or that we are not going about it the wrong way. Just an interesting way of looking at who is coming through....

excitement

what 12-0 not doing it for you!!!

I understand your point, but with only 10 games to go the biggest motivation to every player now is ... finals and keeping their spot.

Look who was best for the cats last week Byrnes and Varcoe. 2 fringe players playing to hold on in the 22

If the thought of playing finals does not "excite" players and motivate them then nothing will.

If we were 0-12 sure play "youth".

We are in this for real and we need to put the best 22 on the paddock every week.

ps I think the big mac is going ok

So would we do this if we were playing Geelong? Answer..NO

SO we play a couple of kids for "freshness", Jade Rawlings says to his players "Hey look St Kilda think they can rest players and play kids agasint us". Result? A possible loss and the media savaging us for lairising at the selection table

Wouldn't play Stanley. Give the lad time.

Steven would get a game, Armitage if he didn't have a broken collarbone, Lynch, Miles, maybe Begley

Personally, I don't beleive the selection table is the place to go to inject excitement.

If I were looking to make some selections that might have that effect, I'd be looking to make selections that could be justified to the extent that it would still be reasonable to go into the Geelong game with "no change".

Steven's getting some wraps in the VFL threads - his inclusion IMO can only be made by giving a rest to Geary.

The other one that probably wouldn't be all that popular on SS but might give Lyon some freedom to experiment is to bring Maguire in for his 100th at the expense of McEvoy. Play him as a 2nd ruck, swing him forward, swing him back and see if and where he fits. Once King's back, regardless of who's taking 2nd ruck duties, they're out, but it lets Lyon play with which talls go where, if necessary including rucking Kosi/Blake.

Luke Miles may also be an option... but from what I understand he's a tall ground level defender, who while a great athlete and very fast, would be playing his first game in a defensive role. With little hype around him, it's only we on SS who would get excitement from this pick.

With injuries, I don't think there's anyone else at Sandy who would generate any excitement and be picked with any bonafide chance of not being straight out the next week.

tall? he's 185, same height as dal, shorter than gram and hayes. he'd be a baker type player with a bit more speed, i think, though i don't remember ever actually seeing him play.

i think he'd create excitement in the side itself - players playing their first game always gives a bit to the group.

Lynch must be close. He has been BOG for Sandy the last two games. Ideal for that 3rd forward spot we are all on about.

If it's just for one game, Stanley. Give him a taste.
This might be selfish, I just wanna see him play!

I was under the impression he was taller than that - but that ala Dempster is a guy who has height but plays at ground level (which has become my model for a "Ross Lyon" type of player).

On the youth policy I'd hypothetically like to see Jack Steven given a shot.

Loved all your disclaimers too solar, you did all you could to make it a hypothetical thread...

Lynch.

3rd tall fwd option frees us up for Goddards etc elsewhere and Lynch has AT LEAST delivered form the last few games for Sandy.

Play youth.

But play them when they are AFL ready.

And never send schoolboy lambs to the slaughter like the failures at Melbourne (Bailey and wanker Connolly) have been doing with Watts.

You probably need to re-assess your views on humour and the impact it may be having on your life Milton66.

Not really. This whole thing is a silly argument IMO. That's just my view. Players like Rioli etc didn't get a run because other players were fatigued. They earnt their spot.

Until such time, the same should go for us.

And yes, I can see P66's black sense of humour. Perhaps like him, I sit here and roll my eyes when I read some of the content.

Nah bugger it people, lets just spend thread after thread bitching a moaning at each other about what someone said 3 years ago about a player whose girlfriend is friends with the president.....

I think that they will pick the team that they want to play against the Cats.

If you want to trial Lynch or whomever I would wait till after the Cats game.

However rather than our bottom age players who are light in body I would look more at players who would be possible selections come Sept....Steven...and Armo once he is fit again. So yep they are the two that I would like to see play.

...and then of course there is the Goose.
