Clearly someone else.
I have checked the statistics.
Someone else has not had any kicks, any handballs and has not laid any tackles.
Someone else should not even be in the team.
I have checked he is not in the team for this week anyhow.

he'll have to press his case just like half a dozen other good players including goose, raph, gwilt, leigh fisher and eddy. you really have to earn your stripes in this team.

Ross has made it clear that aside from 10 or so first picked players, everyone else has to prove themselves in the 2's... This event held true with Max... I cant see Ross bucking the trent to bring in a player who has only played 1 vfl game after a year out..
Sends the wrong message to guys like Goose, Eddy and even X who broke down trying to win back thier spots...
Dempster may wel be in our best 22 come finals, but it wont be in 2 weeks time...

I'd be shocked if Dempster came stright back in, considering not only the others being held out of the team, but the injury he's returning from.
He'll build up match fitness and form at Sandy, before challenging for Baker's role.
I wouldn't be surprised to not see Dempster play through '09 unless injuries demand it.

"As much as i love him, Bakes is finished.
Has not come back from his knee injury.
No longer our #1 run with player and is slow"
Baker has a HUGE game this week ......Some "Press Expert' has him tagging Judd !! because he has done the job in the past .
The old Bakes maybe but not the current Baker IMO

Fanciful idea.
He has played I believe less than half a game and so your assertion is not going to happen.

Dempster is stupidly and unintelligently underrated in this forumMilton66 wrote:The only thing that will keep Dempster out will be fitness. He was an integral part in the 2nd half of the season.
WHilst others might be ahead of him, do they bring the same assets to the table?
Can play tall or short and well, great kick and can run with it...
Why all the hate for baker all of a sudden? baker doesn't play dempsters role and dempster doesn't play baker
Just another attempt at a scapegoat for all the nuff nuffs

i think you have it worng. No one hates baker, but he is slower than he used to be. Doubt that he will be tagger and plahying in the mid again, and in the wings you have dempster who is 5 or 6? year younger, and eventually when he gets over the acl injury would be fitter and faster than baker.reincarnated wrote:Dempster is stupidly and unintelligently underrated in this forumMilton66 wrote:The only thing that will keep Dempster out will be fitness. he's pretty good, but he needs to play a couple of good games in the reserves before he gets promoted. fitness is one hurdle, but form is another - as we've seen with raph.reincarnated wrote:Dempster is stupidly and unintelligently underrated in this forumMilton66 wrote:The only thing that will keep Dempster out will be fitness. I've found the "hate" for Baker perplexing too... he started the season by reminding us all how much we'd missed him. The last couple of weeks have been a bit ordinary, but nowhere near as bad as you'd thin if your only source were reading SS. Perhaps he is slowing with age... or perhaps it's just a couple of ordinary games. Rumours of his demise are greatly exaggerated.reincarnated wrote:Dempster is stupidly and unintelligently underrated in this forumMilton66 wrote:The only thing that will keep Dempster out will be fitness. I do however see Dempster and Baker in direct competition. While Dempster is tall, his leap and marking aren't what you'd want in a key back - he's more a ground level type whose height affords them some marking ability. Looking at our current defense, He's not in the league of Fisher, wouldn't be used for the opponent you'd hand a Hudghton or Dawson, won't contest the marks Blake will (though Blake's an option in lateral movement if Dawson were given his role), his spot means pushing out one of Gilbert (seems unlikely) or Baker, and then beating out Raph for the job.
What will be interesting to see is whether Baker can transition towards the midfield as he gets fitter, as Lyon had liked him there prior to suspension (ironically on a forward) and injury... but the primary shut down role is being played really well by Jones. If not, he continues playing on small forwards in defense.
That's a role that Dempster was playing very well last year by the time he got hurt. Has the tank, the ground skills, the tackling ability... and a height advantage, a willingness to run out of defense, and a long kick. While the Dempster of rds 1-11 '08 would have been no loss, he would have been a handy second option to try on Williams when Gilbert was getting beaten in the PF.
Both at 100%, you'd pick horses for courses, but neither is, and it's going to be a while before the question really comes up.

Well.......
Dempster does seem likely to be included, and imo Baker is the most likely to go, this is because of, as we all know, Ross's desire to keep team structure.....If we want Dempster in then the player most like him but not performing as well has to go, and imo, if Sean gets going, then this is 'bakes'

Yes Dempster may come straight back after the break but he will be fighting Peckett and aussie Jones for a position. Well that makes as much sense as Dempster will come in after the break. He wil have probably played 2 half games of footy in nearly 12 months. Guys this player isnt God. He is a good ordinary trier who may play if we lose form or injury. I dont understand why everyone wants Dempster, Armo, Raph when he wasnt getting a game, Goose and just about everyone else to play when we are 11 zip and most of those were tried last year when we lost 10 games.

yes that might be so, but dempster has played a half a game in the vfl reserves. and the vfl seniors do not play until june 21, therefore, he probably won't be considered for the afl seniors until oh i would say rounds 16-18 depending on how well he plays in the vfl and what fitness levels he provides. most players in their first year after doing an ACL do not play as well as in their 2nd year, eg goddard, hayes etc.#1GILL wrote:Well.......

Why the pressure on Bakes.. Yes, he has looked out of sorts and given away some frees, and yes he has looked slow a times., but...........
How many hard nuts do we have in our side the run at the ball and player at the same time... Hayes, Ball. Kingy provides hardness at the stopage, even Kosi is splittng those pack with great effect. We need guys like Bakes in the team for pure aggression and grunt.
I think the game last week swung around after the Clarke hit. It is an amazing feeling having someone in your team put a hit on the opposition. Even better when its you, it is like getting a shot of adrenaline and Bakes can, a continues to do that.
Who else do we have that can those 1% in the team at the moment?

It could happen. It probably won't. Like Alistair Smith's round one debut.
