Farren Ray

Post: # 753402Post #1GILL »

Does anyone think Farren could be used effectively as a forward? he provides alot of run from the back line usually playing from a flank and pushes into the midfield.
But as we all know he is a great overhead/contested mark for his size. Has leg speed and sound foot skills.
My theory is he could play off a fwd flank rather than a backflank. Still pushing into the midfield as he does.
I think he could become VERY dangerous if he gets close to the goals more often.
Thoughts?

I thought exactly the same thing a few weeks ago.
He has a great grab overhead, which i saw on occasions for the Dogs.
The thing he would need to improve is his goal kicking.
In saying he has been pretty handy in the backline this year so i reckon he will stay down back on the small forward.

Absolute gold in the position he's playing atm. Has courage, has confidence, very good overheard and knows how to work his way through backline and midfield traffic...vital for our ball movement into our F50.

Maybe rotate him in and out to throw the opposition off-balance, but BJ does the same thing better. Ray's a slightly better mark, but Goddard's a much better kick.

I reckon he is kicking too much ass in the position he is in right now. Intresting idea but I go with the old adage

I don't think I have ever seen him play as a forward. I think his current role is just right. While no racehorse, he has good pace, kicks either foot and is an excellent mark, so far this year, nine of them contested, the highest in the team after Kosi (19) and Nick (18).

Agree. Plus we've already got Gwilt playing that exact same role, no need to mess with a structure that's has us 11-0

The Farren Ray fan club in the West here think he should stay where he is. Yesterday he managed to get the ball out at really crucial times, he is a great kick.

Mind you I hasten to add I am no expert

You're as expert as the rest of us, Michele. At the end of the day we are all just Saints fans with hopes and opinions.

A poor kick for goal - we already have enough inaccurate forwards and mids. Has been one of the trades of the century for us.
