Early in the last when the game was still in the balance he marked and kicked a great goal, then took on a couple of defenders and passed it to Kosi.

The game was never in doubt after that.
And any doubts about Gwilt's spot in the side evaporated.

I had already dropped him for next week.

The forward line functioned better when he was sitting on the bench ..... then those two plays.

But I still think Maguire would be a better choice.

Gwilt simply does not throw his weight around enough.
He did not get front and centre when the big guys were involved in the marking contest.
The first of those two plays was a result of North ignoring him as no threat.

I thought Gwilt applied himself well today. Ran hard and broke tackles looked like he wanted it more but can still improve.

I thought that in the last quarter that he at last looked like a real forward.

I have the feeling that Lyon is using 2009 to develop him into the HF that we will need in the finals.

Sometimes he looks lost...sometimes he looks marvelous.

His second half was good.

and if we can develop him into that final quarter forward for the rest of the quarters then we might have found our third forward.

Started to take those marks you want him to. Will never get too many marks because we have roo, kosi and schneider... oh and milne also to kick to.

Unlike a few of his team mates Gwilty had a really solid game from start to finish...provided a really good target all day, had some beautiful finishes, contested against numerous roos in one play and won a free great free kick...

He was great all day. Take the blinkers off!

We all year for a Hamill type player, but we forget how much experience Sammy had when he joined us.

Give Jimmy time to get some consistency into his game. He's a big lad with silky skills.

Wait until he gets 100 odd games under his belt.

and before those two things he layed a great block to allow schneider to swoop and.......... miss

but that was not jimmy's fault

I thought he was solid today.

he'd be stiff to go after that, i agree, but you'd like to see that type of form from him more often, particularly the goal.

a question i do have is whether he is the best man for that role.

he's not the type of forward who has the knack of kicking multiple goals, though granted he kicked an important one today.

would gilbert be better (if we can spare him) or would bj do it better (if we can spare him)?

scoring efficiency is a concern.

no, i agree, he'll keep his spot. just hope that if he is to continue as a forward he can keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Look he is an average footballer but at the moment he deserves his spot. I doubt he will keep it at the end of the year but who knows he may keep improving.

He had a good game. No superstar effort, which seems like a lot of people are expecting of him. Obviously plays his role otherwise he would have been dropped already.

I had Gwilt Dawson and Blake down for a special mention, thought they were all good and hard at it.

I was really impressed with how he attacked the ball (or man with it) all day. He played like he knew he'd be out next week if he didn't have a big one. Deserves to keep his spot for next week.
I still reckon he plays his best footy on the wing, though and I'd still rather see Gilbert, Sam Fisher, or Goddard on the forward flank, to play the role Hamill and Hird used to play. I reckon they would take more marks that Jimmy does, which is what we'll need, especially against Geelong. We can afford to experiment, now that Max is back and we're effectively 5 games clear of 3rd. Finding someone tall and great overhead, yet mobile enough to play on the forward flank would pretty much complete our "jigsaw" (and enable Roo and Kosi to stay closer to goal more). I'd love to see Sam Fisher played there. He could dominate.

2 totally different players - although I have reservations Gwilt did O.K yesterday. Maguire has the agility and mobility of the Queen Mary and for him to play Gwilts position would totally unbalance the team.

Average at best.......two plays do not make a game.

When Raph knocked out Warren, that was good play, he was woeful.

Milne will come straight in, Gilbert will come in, Gardiner will come in....

Yeah I was happy with Gwilt today. Lead up well and had a influence, and even got a goal.

Won't lose his spot after that performance, but I'm not 100% sure he can keep it for the whole year.
