Goalkicking Midfielders
Good to see midfielders kicking some goals this year (ruckmen included). This has been a problem for us for a few years, so it's nice to see scoring power in the midfield. 65 goals shared amongst these players below, out of a total of 156 - 42% of our goals coming from the midfield.
But man, it'd be nice if they'd kick just a little bit straighter! Image if Joey, Gram and Ray, especially, were nailing most of those shots from 50. Just a little bit more goalkicking practice for these guys especially?
Goddard: 11.2 = 85%
McQualter: 9.4 = 69%
Gardiner: 8.3 = 73%
Dal Santo: 6.4 = 60%
Geary: 6.4 = 60%
Montagna: 5.10 = 33%
Gram: 5.10 = 33%
Jones: 5.3 = 63%
Hayes: 3.2 = 60%
Ball: 2.3 = 40%
King: 2.0 = 100%
Ray: 2.5 = 29%
Eddy: 1.0 = 100%

Re: Goalkicking Midfielders
that kicking is freakish, better than lockett's. btw, he kicked more than a third of those in one quarter at ff.bergholt wrote:Goddard: 11.2 = 85%
Re: Goalkicking Midfielders
If these guys had kicked goals instead of behinds over the last few weeks, we would have looked like a different side with more confidence and under less pressure. I really hope this is a focus at training over the next few weeks.bergholt wrote: Image if Joey, Gram and Ray, especially, were nailing most of those shots from 50. Re: Goalkicking Midfielders
i know he's in the team as a defensive-type forward and i don't mind him as a player, but it is a concern that seven midfielders (if you include bj) have outscored gwilt (who has 4 for the season).bergholt wrote:Goddard: 11.2 = 85%

if only he could apply scoreboard, as well as defensive, pressure. it's a valuable commodity for a forward.
Agree but I thought he created a few more opportunities on Saturday and could have had 3 whereas he hasn't looked to be in the position to do much damage prior to this. He looks good on the lead.i know he's in the team as a defensive-type forward and i don't mind him as a player, but it is a concern that seven midfielders have outscored gwilt (who has 4 for the season).

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

This has always been a stat that we have needed to improve and it looks like we have made inroads and are headed in the right directionbergholt wrote: 42% of our goals coming from the midfield.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but to me he just doesn't have the knack of kicking goals and is unlikely to miraculously develop it. Which isn't to say he hasn't played some useful football at times.PJ wrote:Agree but I thought he created a few more opportunities on Saturday and could have had 3 whereas he hasn't looked to be in the position to do much damage prior to this. thanks for the info Berg. Any idea on midfield goals as a percentage of total goals at other clubs? Is there somewhere you found this stat or did you work it out yourself?

nah, worked it out myself.st.byron wrote:thanks for the info Berg. Any idea on midfield goals as a percentage of total goals at other clubs? Is there somewhere you found this stat or did you work it out yourself?
if i can be bothered i might work it out for geelong, but it's way too much effort to do for all clubs.
i don't really know where all these geelong players have been playing, haven't actually seen them this year. i'm going to leave out stokes, rooke and varcoe, which is 45 goals between them, because it seems like they've basically been forwards.
geelong goals from midfielders:
Chapman: 12.4 = 75%
Ablett: 11.10 = 52%
Byrnes: 10.4 = 71%
Bartel: 6.8 = 43%
Mackie: 4.3 = 57%
Selwood: 4.4 = 50%
Ling: 3.4 = 43%
Enright: 2.1 = 67%
Wojcinski: 2.0 = 100%
Blake: 2.0 = 100%
Corey: 1.3 = 25%
Kelly: 1.2 = 33%
Mumford: 1.0 = 100%
Ottens: 0.3 = 0%
geelong have kicked 174 goals in total. 59 of those goals come from these players - this is 34%.
that's a couple fewer goals from midfield in a team which has kicked more goals overall. this suggests that our midfield has been pretty good value.

perhaps we should have swapped raph and gwilt around positionally. raph's never going to be a close-checking defender and gwilt is never going to be a goal-kicking forward.PJ wrote:Jimmy's got the build of Koutafidis but no ego.
