Gwilt tackles well and presents well.
But his decision making when he has the ball is poor as his disposal.
And whilst sometimes he lays fantastic tackles, other times he looks disinterested.

Would have Gram for Jimmy if the change had to be made - however Goose may be an option.The_Dud wrote:fact is, Goose is a better player than Gwilt, so should be in the team ahead of him

So i am to assume you are either unintelligent and misunderstood what the question implied...or that you are a smart alec who makes posts for the sake of attempted humour/getting your quota upjoffaboy wrote:Wasn't an argument Einstein. Well done Jimmy. Getting better all the time.

gwilt is one of our most frustrating players. at times, shows so much promise, but too often fails to deliver.
he is SO slow in his decision making, and at times doesnt look like he is putting in with the chasing and tackling. and people are right, he is not on his own from today's effort.
but i genuinely get worried, every time he gets the ball or is going near it.
the same must be said for raph clarke. if you watch him closely, every time he gets the ball he tries to dish it off by handpass straight away even if the team mate is in a worse position than he is in.
our best 22 does not have gwilt in it, and i am not so sure about raph clarke either.

Just looking forward to us having a real crack each week, and appreciating the younger talent coming through.

Totally agree Beno88. He has played a great role for most of the year, especially in regards to tackling and pressuring opposition defenders. But today he was poor (as were others)...another performance like today and im sure he'll be under heavy pressure if not already.Beno88 wrote:First seven games were excellent. Did his job, had a role.
Last two games have been poor. Needs to return to earlier form to justify his spot, but may be running out of time.
Gwilt came off his best game for the year last week.... Is clearly in our bottom two or three players, but continues to do enough, and did so again tonight IMO... baker and blake were far worse...
Goose playing the same role as Gwilt will not work at AFL level... Gwilts turning circle has been criticised in this thread, well Goose's aint much better... And he is no where near as mobile as Jimmy....
Goose's place is in defence..
However, if Lynch is showing rapid improvment in the same role Gwilt plays, then that swap may be worth a go, as Lynch may have huge upside..

Raph had a very poor game....looked slow, indecisive, poor disposal. The worrying part is that based on todays performance he hasn't improved from 2/3 years ago. Towards the end of last year he showed some good signs but IMO he's not in our best 22.philip wrote:

No, I said he is not as mobile as Jimmy... Do you think otherwise??...BigMart wrote:So you are questioning Goose's mobility and then say his place is in defence.........Doug Wade no longer plays AFL footy.....
The reason I believe his place is in defence is because he has played 99 games there successfully, and in the few times he has been thrown forward at AFL level he has been lost...
Sure he has clunked a few in the VFL, but playing the same role as Jimmy does in the forward 50 does not suit Goose's body type or skill set...
Why not?
Gwilt is basically a decoy....who leads up unmanned......and attempts to put fwd pressure on.....
he would need to put pressure on as a defender, as well as stay with a dirct opponent......
However I do agree we cannot carry
Gardiner, King, Maguire, Kosi, Roo, Blake
one of those to miss.......atm is Goose.....
I think Goddard/Roo/Kosi/Maguire should replace Gwilt at CHF......

couple of thoughts
gwilt is not a natural footballer. He is slow in his decision making, gets lost in traffic. Drifts in and out of the game. Would do very well being coached by gary hocking in what to do when you don't have the ball. he does not cover the leading player (thus his defence is shown up when they switch the ball), does not defend the corridor His tackles don't stick, he chooses when to go.
I would debut lynch next week in that third tall role or use BJ down forward more often.
can people please stop getting gwilt and raph mixed up. Raph has very good hands, is almost too clever with the ball and has a football brain. Unlike jimmy he has not played at the top level since round 1, so it's a little early with the "he's slow".

After everyone was desperate to defend Gwilt after last weeks game I expected to come on here and see everyone talking up as BOG again like they did after Essendon. He was in the bottom 2 or 3 tonight and seemed to be standing around doing stuff all more than he was ever involved in a contest. And then when he did find his way into a contest he seemed to either drop a mark, fail at sticking a tackle or just kick ineffectively! With players like Hudghton, Gram, Maguire playing in the reserves- effort like he displayed today is not good enough.
His form has been dropping off consistantly over the past few weeks and if he still has his spot next week I will be extremely suprised.
I know people will find excuses for him, as they did last week, but I am entitled to my opinion and obviously I am not the coach and have no actual say in what happens to Gwilt this week. That being said, I really hope he gets dropped because there are good players waiitng for selection at Sandy who deserve a run next week more than he does after his performance today.

I hate to make this post because I really believe in supporting all our boys, and hate to be critical of any of them, BUT here goes:QuestionOfAccuracy wrote:Raph had a very poor game....looked slow, indecisive, poor disposal. I know most of you wont agree with me, but I don't think we can afford to play Gwilt and Raph on the same team. Unfortunately they both seem to have similar weaknesses. How many of you can really honestly say you relax and breathe easy when Raph has the ball? Unfortunately his decision making can be both slow and poor. He often looks like a rabbit in the headlights when he gets the ball. Gwilt can be similar in his decision making, although he has a toughness about him and he can have a strong prenetrating kick some of the time.
I wish we could afford the luxury of waiting for them to fulfill the potential they both obviously have, but when we are being targeted as a "team to beat", and we have others ready to step into the side, then I think they deserve the opportunity at the expense of these two, at least for the yime being.
OMG im sick of this blindness in our supporters.jackal wrote:Blake struggled a bit today too. Maybe either Gwilt or Blake for Maxy but we'll have to wait and see. I've changed my mind and feel that Gram should come straight in as well...but not for Raph as he is certainly in our best 22
what are we gonna play max as the 3rd tall?
dont swap for the sake of it.
max would come in for blake, or baker.
goose still shouldnt come back for a while
horrific injury.
vfl to afl is a massive step.
wasnt in the best for the vfl this week was he?
that's a ridiculous argument, joffaboy.joffaboy wrote:Has played in a team who has 9 wins and a % or 183 out of nine played.
Well done Jimmy. Getting better all the time.
you're saying that the way we played yesterday was as good as we could possibly play and so no improvement is possible. is that right?

I am and always have been a big fan/supporter/defender of Jimmy but sadly even I think that his time has run out.
Goose would be a better option at the moment. He can be a third tall option up foward or help down back. Jimmy is far too loose with his disposal recently to retain his spot

Can Goose play the third tall fwd/3rd tall back role?Hurricane wrote:I am and always have been a big fan/supporter/defender of Jimmy but sadly even I think that his time has run out.

No argument about playing CHB/CHF/FB/FF but a flanker's position?
I don't think he currently has the mobility to do that.
He kicked consecutive bags of 5 goals at Sandy when he was the main focal point in attack - the ball was directed to/through him.
In the senior team he will not be filling that role - Roo/Kosi are doing that up forward.
The role Gwilt is being asked to play is quite different - much more mobile than a leading/propping key forward.
agreed. and i don't think goose can play that role.Mr Magic wrote:The role Gwilt is being asked to play is quite different - much more mobile than a leading/propping key forward.
but neither can gwilt.
after round 9, here are his averages:
13.8 disposals, 3.6 marks, 0.3 goals, 0.6 behinds, 2.8 tackles, 0.7 goal assists, 2.2 inside 50s
this means that he's ranked, in the team:
18th for disposals
20th for marks
15th for goals
12th for tackles
11th for inside 50s
7th for goal assists
14th for goals contributed (goals + assists)
seventh for goal assists is ok. the rest are pretty poor. the worst is that he's playing permanent forward and is fourteenth in goals contributed.
you might be able to make a case for him in any individual game, by saying he did a couple of good things. but these good things have to add up to whole good games at some point. he's not having whole good games.
sorry jimmy, but you're just not there right now.
