NSW scholarship holder, Josh Duncan

Post: # 743776Post thirty-seven!? »

Played today for NSW/ACT vs Queensland (in the under 18 championships.

He played in the winning team, and was the leading possession getter!

St Kilda scholarship holder Josh Duncan was the game's leading ball-winner with 29 touches. The Ram also had a game-high seven inside 50s.

This is definately a promising sign!!!

Did anyone see the game, or have any other news?

Excellent news. Is he contracted to us so we have first option if he continues to impress?

He is one of our NSW Scholarship player.

So we have first right to draft him.

Because he is a NSW scholarship holder and turns 18 before the end of this year, St Kilda has 3 choices at end of the season.

1. Promote him to the senior list WITHOUT going through the draft.

2. Preselect him as a bonus rookie - he does not count against the 6 rookie limit or affect rookie draft priorities.
He and Ted Widner would count against the 3 former scholarship player limit (Haretuku must drop off but McGrath can have another season).

3. Cut him loose.

In other words he is a St Kilda' player if they want him and it does not affect the club's draft picks. :D

But he does have the right to say no and go into the national draft and try his chances.

So if we offer him a rookie spot and it's not good enough for him he can go elsewhere. Ranga Ediwickarama was in this position last year and showed loyalty to the cats and went on the rookie list when IMO he would have been a second or third round selection in the national draft.

That would be rather ungrateful after we've had Duncan on our scholarship list for three years.

Duncan would have to make a decision and as the afl funded most of his scholarship money and an afl club is a business and could say bye bye at any time he would be mad not to look at all options as he was in high demand from other clubs when the scholarship scheme began

If he's that good, he'll almost certainly end up like Taylor Walker and Craig Bird being drafted by us with our last pick. I can't see us letting him go. Not for the sake of a later pick in a draft with questionable depth.

Yeah all good points, I would much rather we take him on the senior list, but then again I would have thought Geelong would have wanted Ranga on their senior list too...

Overall it's better to rookie a NSW scholarship holder, because they don't count towards the cap of six/seven rookies so essentially you can draft another player. If they go on the senior list, they're one of the 38.

That's why we've got the biggest list right now, because we've already placed two scholarship boys on the rookie list.

From memory, Geelong only had three picks in the draft, so wanted to use them on players up for grabs to all clubs.

Ranga was never going to break into the Geelong lineup this year was he?

So as Geelong, why waste a pick on a player that wont make ur senior team this year when you know you can get them as your last pick in the rookie draft?

Makes Sense!

We may be in a similar position this year with Duncan - interesting what Ace said about only 3 NSW rookies allowed on the rookie list, meaning either McGrath or Haetuku would go - one would assume the latter, as neither look ready for an upgrade.

Saints will hopefully be in the same position as Geelong by the end of the year - strong senior list, so drafted players would really have to be something special to get a game.

Does anyone know anything about Widner? The other NSW rookie we could pick up this year?

Haretuku's had his two years on the supplementary rookie list, at the end of this year we either have to promote him or cut him. I'd say the latter is more likely.

McGrath's safe, he can spend another year developing.

Duncan and Widmer are both eligible for this year. Duncan might be senior listed, but giving him a year on the rookie list to fill out and adapt mightn't be the worst idea in the world. Widmer's a key back, so if we take him he'll probably go on the rookie list.

So at the end of the year, we can have a full senior list, full rookie list and all three supplementary NSW rookie spots filled.

Next year's more interesting, because I'm pretty sure our other two NSW boys will be eligible so we'll have four lads competing for three rookie spots and maybe even senior spots.

be interesting to see what what happens with Haretuku.

Might have to cut him as he has not even made the reserves seniors side at all.

Just what I read, my knowledge of the rookie list and the scholarship scheme is stronger than that of the players.

NSW/ACT played Vic Metro last weekend and got pumped by over 100 points

Unfortunately Josh D only played 5 minutes as he was taken from the ground after a head clash and did not come back on

Report came from BigFooty (see it is good for something)

NSW/ACT's next game is against NT on 20th June at ANZ Stadium

Went to the vic metro game in sydney and duncan played the first quarter and had 7 possessions in the first quarter and in a tackle was involved in a head clash with mc neil one of his team mates and up until that time was one of the best on field. May watch him against nt but from what i saw against vic metro nsw were pore in all departments no game structure and the coaches did nothing to try and stop the vics attack maybe nsw should get bucks to coach the nsw team instead of vic country under `16s and then with decent talent behind them nsw may develop.
