Another dumb list - guys that left us to play well elsewhere or dumped us for no apparent reason;

Tony Lockett -went to share the goal square with a pig? Why why why Tony?

Joel Smith- wanted dollars with one leg

Barry Hall-Cant think of any thing nice to say

Luke Penny- kept us hoping

Cayden Beetham- high draft pick didnt like the footy culture? WTF

James Begley- Watson said he was a future captain, went to the Crows!

Aussie Jones -I loved watching him play he denied me another couple of seasons.

Spida Everett- Stupid oaf cost us a fortune in legal bills and never got it together for us

Nicky Winmar- I know it wasnt his choice but he should have been retired so I didnt have to witness his bulldog jumper

Ian Stewart -before my time but having to hear old tigers supporters tell me about their great Stewie. Grrr

Big Carl Ditterich- as above

And a list of our hand me downs should go here, guys we dumped only for them to go s*** somewhere else but Im struggling to come up with more than;

James Begley I think is a bit tough on your list.

I believe he was terribly affected by the death of his mate in the Bali bombing and mentally needed to go home.

Was a genuinely nice bloke.

Not sure I agree with Aussie or Nicky for that matter. Both great players and Saints men to this day. Luke Penny never really broke my heart and retired through injury rather than to another going to another club.

Jamie Shanahan, the club couldn't pay him anymore as they were trapped by the salary cap after playing in a Grand Final.
Already had a deal with Melbourne, refused to be traded to them so that Melbourne could take him for FREE with the No1 pick in the pre season draft.

Ian Stewart at the time.
I was young and naive at the time so didn't understand the rumours, but if what I heard were true, now I would have preferred him traded to Melbourne Demons so he would go straight to hell.
Does anyone know the facts?

I think James Begely's sister died and he needed to go home and was released on compassionate grounds - entirely understandable.

Oops, I misunderstood what you posted.
I thought you were saying that the Saints players had changed their minds about him back then.

I've met him a number of times (not in the last 3 years) and he was a delightful, respectful, compassionate young man. He certainly wasn't 'ahead of himself' back then.

Luke Penny had a serious knee injury. Bit hard to lump him in with this list; he left football entirely, not just us. He had the rest of his life to consider.

Yep that broke every1s heart. We all loved him. Would have won the premiership in 97 if he'd still played for us. Out Heatley, in Lockett = 10 goal win and Tony copped at 10week suspension for teaching Pittman not to stand infront of Loewe.

Couldn't give a stuff about Cayden... when u look at who was taken after him in the draft... thats when it hurts

I never understood Tim Watson's reluctance (bordering on refusal) to give Siera a decent hitout as a key forward. The times I saw him play at the very least you always got a contest.

How the hell can you have Winmar on the list. The club let him down, not vice versa. Should never have been forced to wear another jumper. Still dirty on the club for that. Shame oin you St Kilda!!!

Agree with you wholeheartedly, Winmarvellous.

We played 24 games that year and the club, in The Saint magazine, ranked him in our best players in 16 of them, and then shafted him at the end of the year.

Begley never lost his love for the Saints - even whilst still a crows player!!! 2005 QF at AAMI the Saints win an epic, who does Begley sit with?? (he was out injured) with Tony Brown, Glen Elliott and Anthony Harvey in the StKilda reserved seat area. Barracking like mad for .... US!!!

He is a decent bloke who wishes he stayed with the saints.

If he wanted to stay with us (Begley that is) he could of.......not sure how the death of a mate forced him to go home, and how it would have helped him recover.......many people have mates unfortunately die prematurely.....its a part of life one must learn to deal with it, as horrible as it sounds........88 australians died that day..........

He left the saints because he wanted to go home (and we got zilch for him).....like many interstate recruits.......he was far from any good anyway.....played about 70 games total.....IMO one of the more underwhelming players we have recruited
