Sheesh,
How a simple question like tha above has elicited an argument is typical of how Saintsational seems to operate.

I, rightly or wrongly (and remember it is only my oinion!) could see some similarities in teh way Dawson played on Saturday night with the way Penny used to play at Full back.

I never made any reference to him being better, worse, equal or any reference to his long term viability as a Saints player.

As far as I can see nobody else did either other than Stinger? making a reference to Dawson being quicker than Penny.

And then Plugger comes along in his inimitable style and posts a 'blanket sledge' at all and sundry over connets that were never made?

So Plugger just for you:-

I wasnt having a go at your post but when someone says Zac on one leg would be quicker than Penny then that is a definate sledge. Surely you can see that. I didnt mention your post at all just said we shouldnt evne start comparing Zac to Penny after one game. Surely you can see that even if you cant see our game is by far the best run game in the land.

Dawson was good. Very good even.

Can't read much into Saturday night though, in terms of our defenders and in terms of Sydney's forwards.

John Coleman would have found it tough on Saturday if he was in a Swans jumper.

One good game does not a champion make... just ask Allan Murray.

I think most of us are pleased for young Zac because of the ridicule he received on this forum by some posters who know SFA about footy or what the coach's plan is.

As the great E.J said... He stuck it right up 'em!

The lid is off after Round 2! Enjoy the journey, coz you just don't know where we'll end up. Live for today and seize the moment.

For what it's worth, these are my observations of Zac......

Tall and strong.
Very quick off the mark.
Very agile for someone who is 195cm.
Huge leap.
Hungry to establish himself after being delisted by Hawthorn.
Still young.

A player with all the above attributes would normally cost a pretty decent draft pick in the national draft and yet we picked him up in the rookie draft.

I believe that we have a gem on our hands who hasn't cost us much.

I did find myself thinking on Saturday night that if Dawson holds his opponents until Hudghton gets back, RL will be in a very similar situation to what GT was in 04. So in that sense, I guess I was reminded of Penny. Penny's best was too long ago and for too short a time for me to get a clear image of what he was as a player though.

I liked the way Dawson played. Angry, aggressive, good spoils without giving away frees. He had a lot of help on the night, but he hardly put a foot wrong. While I always prefer to excercise caution when pumping up new players, I think there's good reason to be excited about Dawson as a key defender. Let's hope he backs it up.

Whether he was overrated or not, the treatment Penny got around here when he retired was disgusting. Our much maligned fitness staff thought they could get him through on one good knee. Our coach took a shot at him in the press. Because of that, certain people around here labelled him all kinds of awful things. With his problems, he would have been taking a major risk continuing. I'd love the St Kilda football club to win a flag, but I'd rather be able to walk when I'm older.

Not specifically your post but I've noticed a number of times that the issue of 'he had plenty of help' being raised, almost in a derogatory tone?

And yet 'experts' seem to run out of compliments for Scarlett who is the beneficiary of so much assistance he could almost line up in the forward line?

Why is it good for some but not for others?

No I'm pretty sure it wasn't Boofhead, not broad enough across the shoulders. I thought it was Kieren Jack.

might have been...he dropped hall as well then
I just saw the Hall bump from Youtube on the other thread - http://www.saintsational.com/forum/view ... p?p=715854

Didn't even see that one during the game, I must have been doing something else at the time. That definitely wasn't the bump I saw. Kieren Jack, or someone of his build, at top flight. Zac, from almost a standing start, meets him chest on, almost in the same spot he took Bazza out. Bang! The guy flies backwards, flat on his back. Must have thought he could mow Zac down.

Folks, we have a real cracker on our hands!

I don't think it takes anything away from his personal performance. Like I said, he didn't put a foot wrong all night. Hall's only goal wasn't in any way his fault.

Our team did a great job of limiting Hall's space. When it came down to one-on-one, Dawson was always up to the task. It wasn't a Hudghton-on-Franklin type of performance but, given the circumstances, Dawson played about as well as he possibly could have.

It will be interesting to see who he gets this week since Adelaide have no obvious opponent for him.
