Positives From Round 1

Post: # 714379Post Ghost Like »

* The FOUR points

* Our tackling and forward pressure

* Our defence, to regroup, steady and rebound

* Farren Ray

* Michael Gardiner

* Zac Dawson

* Ross Lyon's coaching to re-focus and regroup the side after quarter time and still manage them when they were out on their feet and short on the bench in the last quarter. I commend him for not risking Riewoldt after he came off in the last quarter.

SPECIAL NOTES:

Kosi: That mark that Jolly took over him I likened to Germany invading Russia. Thank you Jolly for waking the 'Sleeping Bear'!

Who will get the '2' and '1' Brownlow votes? Afterall Goodes had about 17 possessions and kicked a goal so apparently those stats usually give him the 3 votes!!! I'm tipping Dal and Gilbo. Special mentions to BJ's and Ball's games, they stepped up in the absence of Lenny.

Dawson is a player - his attack on the contest was first rate.

Dal Santo after quarter time.

McQualter as a pressure forward.

Kosi after the mark - his field kicking was A grade.

Steven Baker's pathological hardness.

A fit Michael Gardiner.

Good Raph.

Ball, Goddard, Gilbert, Montagna.

Farren Ray's courage.

Schneider's smart arse routine - he was a difference maker.

Milne getting his three.

Mini deserves his spot.

I kept an eye on the "whipping boys" and he goes ok and hard.

Dal

Gardi

Dawson

Ray

Kosi, tho looks lost up fwd and got towelled, I reckon when in the suqre.

Great pressure.

Gilbo was a star!

There was a point in the second quarter when Shytney were employing a full flood and we worked the ball from the water side to the City side and then switched to a running GIlbert in the middle who bombed the ball long into the goalsquare for a simple goal.

It looked like we actually executed a plan to beat the flood.

Yeap... come in "spinner" :lol:

CJ still worries me. Can't handle the pressure.

Must say that Mini in a fwd role works for me. He can apply pressure and didn't give an inch.

funny thing was our supporters started boo when we started that move. It worked very well because kosi sprinted across ground to create an option on the city side.

Ray was fantastic and his vision very good.

mini was excellent. dal after half time was very impressive. Things slowly clicked and I am happy with the win with players out and lots of keys not at full fitness

Z.Dawson...who IMO has been impressive since he rocked up, great game

M.Gardner...making an impact

N.Dal Santo...proving critics wrong

S.Gilbert...continueing to grow, and playing the role he should

Raph....just a clean, silky smooth mover

F.Ray....Impressive

Midfield group worked hard and shared the load....

Worked back into the game.....we showed mental toughness..

Baker played a solid comeback game
Blake as usual - unheralded down back...he has been awesome for a long time now...

Lastly - Kosi...at quarter time he was getting bagged....then he showed what all the fuss is about..

100% agree. Great to see the team standing strong with little influence on his part, though i can't wait to see him back in form...

I agree with most of whats been posted - Id also add that I thought it was nice to start to see :

some mids bob up with some goals,

Gardiner drift fwd as another fwd option,

we moved the ball quicker and with some purpose (as Lyon stated afterwards thats what he wants....hopefully the "we are sydney" dreamers can catch up...)

Gilbert deserves special mention for mine - very close to BOG....probably just shaded by Dal....with Ray close.

Kosi - really liked to see him start to go mobile round the ground - marshalling the backline at one stage - he just may be that 'x' factor yet if he gets comfortable in his skin.....you could see him lift after that mark.

I also thought Raph Clarke looked very good - and I havent been a fan. Very smooth and composed and real dissapointed he was injured.....IF he gets a decent run at it we may just see what all the fuss was about there.

No-one has mentiond CJ's tagging job on McVeigh

I must admit I hadnt noticed him much until someone who clearly watches the big picture far closer than me (OK it was St Fid) pointed out to me in the 2nd quarter "watch how closely CJ is sticking to McVeigh"

For the rest of the game I watched..and CJ gave him nothing. The only time McVeigh got into the game IMO was for 10 mins in the 3rd qtr when CJ was benched. Farren Ray was moved onto him and gave him more leeway...whilst hurting Sydney himself of course.

Early in the last quarter Sydney were trying to break CJ's tag by trying to get Ted Richards onto CJ and McVeigh onto Ray. CJ wasnt having a bar of it :-)

Unheralded game on a very dangerous player IMO

Great point - I missed that and thought Jones was quiet...good get.

Also thought Gilbert stopping O'keefe was a first for us...he ALWAYS cuts us up.

Not only stopped him but was very damaging himself going the other way. Very important job done as small forwards like him always give us trouble. Great faith shown by RL after trying him forward all preseason..plus the towelling he got from a similar player (Williams) in the PF last year

bloody hell....I remember Collingwoods 89 v Cats last year and was amazed by that.....74 is an awesome effort.

Nice adition of HARDNESS and PRESSURE to a Saints side many said could only play "racehorse" footy Id suggest.

Bring on the baby Blues...

Just watched Ross's press conference. Confirmed 74 tackles which I think is great. Also really showed how much more relaxed he is in front of the press compared to last year.
