Paul Couch was the obvious one, winning the medal for 89.
But there was actually 7 Brownlows awarded in 1989 !!!!
Apart from Couchy, there was 6 retrospective medals issued on 3rd April 1989 after the decision to abolish the countback system was made retrospective.
Under the countback system that used to apply, in the event of a tie the medal went to the player receiving the most best on ground (3) votes.
MrM has named two ...
Our very own Verdon Howell from 1959 was one.
And Noel Teasdale from 1965 was another.
4 to go !

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

Correct.
There was actually 7 Brownlows awarded in 1989 !!!!
Paul Couch won the 89 medal.
But there was also 6 retrospective medals issued on 3rd April 1989 after the decision to abolish the countback system was made retrospective.
Under the countback system that used to apply, in the event of a tie the medal went to the player receiving the most best on ground (3) votes.
Hence the following people who tied on votes for Brownlows but then lost under the countback system received their medals
1965 Noel TEASDALE* North Melb.
1959 Verdun J. HOWELL* St.Kilda
1952 William HUTCHINSON* Essendon
1949 Colin AUSTEN* Hawthorn
1930 Harry COLLIER* Collingwood
1930 Alan A. HOPKINS* Footscray
Notes.
The 1940 Brownlow was a perfect tie (identical votes) between Des Fothergill and Herbie Matthews (both received cheap replicas at the time).
The 1930 medal then became a three way tie including the countback winner Stan Judkins
Also William HUTCHISON died in 1982 so never received his 1952 medal

I think he still teaches at the Quambatook Group School.
Quambatook's football colours are the Saints colours.
A couple of my brothers in law played for the Mighty Quamby Saints..

I was initially going to use "Paddy Murphy" as my username.
And there is a classic photo somewhere of him with "Brains from Thunderbirds" type glasses that would have made a fantastic avatar.
But I figured it was too far back and no-one would remember him.
So I went for that fantastic one game wonder with the enchanting name - Enrico Misso - instead.

I'll get back to you with a question.
I thought of a terrific one a few weeks ago but I can't remember it now.
Or if someone has one - feel free to step in.

At least Paddy was Saints through and through. (I should say I went to school with him)
Happy St Paddy's Day to all.
