As for stats - if anyone bothers to do the calculations - there are a few % mentions above that do not match what my calculator says - but lets forget that.
Leigh Matthews comes to mind for me - a player that never won a Brownlow - must therefore not be rated highly
Neither did big Carl or Baldock!
Players that played full-forward must make the most of opportunities - sometimes the ball only comes down 5 times and they have to get it and convert - and sometimes your best needs to be down there. Stats do not show much in this regard.
In the 80s our team might have had a guy like Joffa - who got so many possessions when noone else seemed capable of getting a kick - win heaps of BFs. It does not make him a great.
It is opinions that make this game - quality over quantity!

This is a team game and there is no room for individuals who think they are above walking through the fire.

Well - I would not rate Mike in my top 50 reporters of all time - I would have said journalists - but he would not qualify at all - lol
Does he even have any qualifications?
Quote: On his top 50 "Half of the players (25) have played since or in 1980".
And Greg Williams is above Ian Stewart
Lockett at 6 and Stewart at 11 are relevant to this thread.
Oh - and Dunstall is above Lockett and Carey is God

Yeah, opinions are more accurate than whayt records say.....
Lets forget what the record books say and just go with one persons view over another.....
and since when is winning an award or having an acheivement a stat.....that is a word Magic used.....
I just listed what Harvey achieved.....and he must have been good to actually achieve them...
DO WE DIAGREE WITH THAT.....
My question was that if Baldock is rated alongside Harves from just 119 games....he must have been the best in his era (after all Harves was, as I pointed out) why was he (doc) not as decorated - infact a team-mate was the one who got all the accolades
My question is again
Why is Harvey our most decorated player - if he is not the best?????....clear that up for me...
St.Fid
Bringing up some history - with out any quotes.....obviously you have a good memory - you even know my old nics....even I had forgotton some of them....
You are ridiculous....seriously...actually most of your dribble is anyway....I actually thought you were a young kid....
and
What is that about Blakey - a former Y12 student of mine......care to elaborate and find some quotes to back up you statement, or are we just gonna take your word for it.....
Did I say that - he cannot kick, or he makes poor decisions......that I stand by......but I admire him as a player....a great clubman....and a nice person
Raph Clarke is Lazy......if you knew much about him, you would know this....he is an enormous talent, with great attributes - but poor work ethic.....which is why (for such a talented player) he has under achieved thus far (41 games in 5 years) and very close to delisting - a player who was seen as talented as Cooney in the Draft.
Andrew Thompson was a B&F winner, a club champion 200 gamer.....he was a poor kick, but a great midfielder through some dark times in particular......I am sure I potted against him......
Lastly - the changing name conspiracy
I have nothing to keep secret from a bunch of people I have never met, I have zero connection with anyone on this site and do NOT give a fat rats toss-bag what people think about me.....so there is nothing to hide champ..
My nic changes because my computer rolls over every 12 months, and I forget the password to my account so I create a new one.....there is a common theme amongst my names Marto, Mart, St.Mart, Big Mart, St.M - I think people realise I am the same person and have been since 2001 - about when I joined....you obviously did..there's your mystery.....

Yes the media people do not know as much as us......seriously they get paid to give their opinion, and have been in the industry and are high profile...how come????
We are morons on a website......
good god...
Leigh Matthew never won a B-Low.....however he finished his career with the third most votes of any player......so I guess he figured pretty high in a few counts....to go with his
5 Premierships, 8 Best and Fairests and coleman medal....
People may say Matthews is the best - his STATS (achievements) help support that opinion - 8 B&F's many in P'ship teams.

OMG....BigMart wrote:I think that stats are a measure of sport, without them there can be NO comparison....
Yadda yadda ...
...BTW - Kevin Bartlett was also a major reason that rule that was bought in....
and you dare to question loris, that has seen and heard....
You are really showing that stats mean sh1t and more so comparing players from a different era.
another stats blunder that you keep referring to...
Baldock was the original player that the rules were changed when I was about 7...
He was the master of it at the time and a modification was brought in to counteract Baldock's dominance...
Yes they were modified a lot later when Bartlett was playing,
This is of course your memory,
and in essences its right but again the rules originally changed when Baldock was playing and was modified during the Bartlett era...
but loris is right...
it was originally changed because of Baldock...
Oh, you wont find that in your "stats"...
Memories, some have them...
Some don't...
Some look at books
But still have no idea...

.....and yes you do have a good memory, you can recall what I post from years ago.....interesting...
there is a difference between seeing and watching footy.....and having the first clue about it......fact is you have a limited knowledge of the game, I have never been remotely interested in your views on the game and if I were rating posters - unfortunately I would have far less recollection of you, than you seem to of me.....but that would be an opinion without stats to back it up - hang on, they don't count.......
Many on here have a huge understanding of the game.....not due to age..........due to footy intelligence...BTW how old do you think I am????
I did not start watching footy last year.....
Now to the throwing rule.....I was watching the 1980 Grand-Final when I was young (live in Tassie, hint to my age) and I watched Bartlett kick 7, often throwing the ball in front of him as he was being tackled.....this stuck in my mind, as I went and practised it after the game in the backyard with my brother....
Why was Bartlett allowed to do this in 1980 if the rule was changed in the 60's????
I do not know the answer

I remember the insults you gave under another nic when you blasted Andrew Thompson...
You just left and morphed into another nic...
How convenient ...
Don't bother with your insults it has been proven in the past that you are p1ss weak and just change your nic...
nice try with the insults to get me to bite, but don't bother...
Your are really pathetic and most can see that...
Just go reading your stats and be done with it

Well don't read it dude.....if this guy is going to have a crack and make up some B-S in a public forum without any substance., totally unrelated to the thread....seriously, I will bite....
the rest, is just footy debate....I believe one point of view, others believe another...I try to back up my views with facts.....right or wrong....
I believe achievements are gained for a reason.....they tell a story about the individual and are evidence of his ability...

You called me 'some fool' for having an opinion that differs from yours.
I replied and then offered to take the argument to pm's so that the rest of the forum wouldn't have to 'suffer'.
You didn't even have the courtesy to respond to the offer, just totally ignored it.
And after so many posts on this thread I can see that the 'penny has still not dropped for you' - your opinion is not a FACT, no matter how many statistics, schievments you quote. ANd I'll give you a tip - your opinion on who is the best will never be a fact.
And BTW, why do you keep mentioning that you are a Tasmanian. Surely you're not trying to suggest that because you were born in Tasmania you have some special insight on Baldock because he also is a Tasmanian?

And Robert Harvey is the one with the horrible hair cut and was so for the 21 years he played. He might have had sublime footy skills but his hair style was abysmal IMHO.markinUSA wrote: But if anyone is having trouble separating Burke and Harvey, I can help.
Burke is the one with red hair.
I think he modelled it on Uncle Neil
Hey folks note the 'O' in IMHO...this is only an opinion, definitely not FACT
AND, guess what IMHO The Doc's hairstyle was worse than Bangers

And just how many awards were around when Baldock was playing in comparison to Harvey’s playing days?BigMart wrote:I said I use facts (not stats) to support an argument...
The facts are what Harves has achieved - they are not stats they are facts.....he has ACTUALLY WON THOSE AWARDS.....that is A FACT....
He has won more than any other - that is a FACT

Well here's some facts based on your use of the Brownlow as a 'fact'BigMart wrote:I said I use facts (not stats) to support an argument...

He has won more than any other - that is a FACT
Since the inception of the Brownlow Medal, Umpires have consistently voted midfielders/on-ballers as better than any other players
Lockett is the best Full-Forward to have ever played the game, as he's the only one to have ever won a Brownlow.
Addam Cooney is obviously a better player than Scarlett, Silvagni, Frawley and plenty of other Full-Backs who never won a Brownlow. He is the equivalent of Verdun Howell who also wone a Brownlow.
Baldock, Barassi, Whitten, Matthews, Carey, Ablett (senior and junior) Bob Pratt, Hudson, Bartlett and countless other Legends/Champions of the game were obviously not as good as Cooney because he won a Brownlow and they didn't.
The Brownlow Medal is decided on the OPINIONS of umpires. Yet you choose to use their OPINIONS as some sort of vindication that your opinion is a fact?
I'll give you a tip - most football people don't even think that Cooney was the best player of 2008.
Are you ever going to understand that you cannot use statstics to compare players from differing eras unless all the conditions are the same? And to use achievements only has relevance when you are comparing players from the same era.
Even the way the Brownlow is voted for is changed. 30 years ago if a player had been reported and/or suspended, the Umpire didn't give him a vote as he was ineligible. Today the umpires are instructed to give the votes to the best player (in their OPINION) regardless of his eligibility.

that is utter garbage. cant believe people still peddle the (indiginous) stereotype about winmar being "freakish but going missing". they guy was a genuine workhouse when he matured. tackling was one of , if not his major strength. he had a really good run rate and really good tackle and defensive rate.ausfatcat wrote:burkie was good but Harves was by far better, Winmar was a freakish player but went missing.
back to the post. harvey was miles ahead of burkey. burkey's kicking was awful. really let him down. was a turnover king.
i would say winmar 9/10. harvey 9/10. burkey 7/10.
hey marto haven't bothered with the rest of this thread but this debate about players with awards intrests me. Is a player better if they have a standout year among average years and wins a brownlow (see woewodin for instance). On the other hand there have been many great players to never win a flag (see banger as among those). Certain triple brownlow medalists have said they would give up all their awards for one flag.BigMart wrote:Yes the media people do not know as much as us......seriously they get paid to give their opinion, and have been in the industry and are high profile...how come????

I would put B&F wins and norm smiths in flag winning sides higher then brownlows but the multitude of harveys awards must count for something. Does doc get the nod because his side got over the line in 66 while banger played in the loss in 97?

Robert Harvey was a consistently brilliant player for probably the last 19 of his 21 seasons....that is extraordinary.
Darrel Baldock has done something no other St.Kilda person has ever done, and that is captain the side to a premiership.
I never got the chance to watch him play, but no doubt he was a star.
All I do know is that I have seen nearly all of Robert Harvey's games, and I will only add that if your a better player then Harvs, you must be pretty dam good....

Can no-one else be the 'best ever Saint' because they didn't play as many seasons nor win as many awards?
And why is it that people who have seen both Baldock and Harvey (and others for that matter) have their povs 'dismissed' by this particualr poster as being somewhat 'less worthy' than his own own, which has now grown from a pov to a 'fact'?
This, IMHO, is the nub of the disagreement on this matter.
Us old-timers who actaully saw Baldock and Stewart play for the Saints have our views denigrated, dismissed, discounted by BigMart becasue we disagree with his perspective. What would we know? His opinion is a fact
