AFL Bonus Points discussion....
In light of our poor scoring at times (especially 1st half of 2008), the whole Bonus Points concept could really benefit our club IMO.
I'd be interested in a bonus point for any 100+ point win, and/or a bonus point for any team score of 150+ points.
Thoughts??

Yep, a great concept worth exploring further. It will give a real attacking impetus and stop the game from degenerating into a handball happy, defensive zoning, possession bore that is has become at times.
Instead of tinkering with the fabric of the game by knee jerk reacting with rules, it simply rewards attacking footy, which is what we all want to see.
Make it achievable i.e a bonus point applies for a win whilst scoring over 100 points. Make teams want to kick over 15 goals in a game and reward them appropriately.

This can't happen, because of the unfair, uneven draws that some teams have over others. Say if one team plays melbourne twice while another plays geelong twice it isn't really fair is it? You might beat geelong twice which is by far a superier achievement than beating melbourne twice by by over 100 points, but u recieve less points? Stupid idea?
When Harvey played his first game in 1988, I was a 12yo wearing short pants and struggling with my readin', writin' and 'rithmetic in grade eight. Now, I'm a father of three and a retired AFL player. And he's still going. Amazing! - Michael Voss
Ground and weather conditions also would come into play. Lots of variables involved.
Could be hailing at the G for a gutsy 2 point win 49-51, while the Dome is dry for a 2 point win 121-119.
Not entirely against the bonus points system, but should possibly be based on percentages, not overall points scored.
Also, as mentioned above, the inequity of the draw also creates issues.

This would have to be one of the worst ideas the AFL has ever put up...... can you imagine trying to explain this to anyone coming to the game who was not an AFL person..... which is everyone in Queensland and NSW...... which just happen to be where the AFL is adding teams into...... with all of these rule changes every year......and the handball and zone fest we have at the moment and lets not talk about the bump...... they need to leave the game alone......even the players are confused.....

Hate the idea, you don't have a level playing field so how the hell can you possibly have bonus points.
Leave the game as it is FFS, why change something that has been going for 150 years.

Silly argument IMO....sure, be against the idea, it's just an idea (and no, not an AFL agenda - yet! lol!), but to to say "leave the game as it is" is totally flawed as there are rule changes aplenty and have been for 100 years.Dal_Santos_Gal wrote:Hate the idea, you don't have a level playing field so how the hell can you possibly have bonus points.

As for the level playing field issue that you and many others have talked about, yep, that's a big problem - I'd love a 30 round season, or a 24/26 rounder to make it fairer........if a bonus point was awarded, for the reasons of inequitable draws etc, it would have to be for a huge win, and not handed out lightly IMO.
The AFL love using the NAB cup for experimental rules, which is fine IMO, but I can't see how this one could fit into a knockout comp unfortunately!
This is a classic example of something the AFL could use it's website to garner discussion/ideas like it's proposing to do for the countdown clock at Telstra Dome, if it thinks the idea has legs....
Hmmm, so if you, say beat a team by more than 50% you would garner an extra point? So, 75+ vs 50 or 120+ vs 80.Iceman234 wrote:Not entirely against the bonus points system, but should possibly be based on percentages, not overall points scored.
I like it in theory, but I suppose it does begin to get a bit impractical when complicated by such maths!
Anyhow, got to applaud the lateral thinking - there does seem to be a perception out there that the game is becoming more tactical and defensive.

Rubbish idea.
Totally unfair unless all games are played in controlled conditions in indoor stadiums.
Besides there are already incentives to score
- firstly it helps secure a victory
- secondly it improves your percentage which can often impact your ladder position by a notch or two
Ross Lyon said in his excellent address at the AGM that (on of) his aims for 2009 was to increase our average score from 14 to 16 goals a game.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

exactly your opinion, but game rules change with any sport, but how the points system works is totally different, ladders (AFL,NRL NBL etc) or rankings (tennis, golf) it generally stays the samesaintspremiers wrote:Silly argument IMO......sure, be against the idea, it's just an idea (and no, not an AFL agenda - yet! lol!), but to to say "leave the game as it is" is totally flawed as there are rule changes aplenty and have been for 100 years.Dal_Santos_Gal wrote:Hate the idea, you don't have a level playing field so how the hell can you possibly have bonus points.

Not sure what you're getting at here DSG. Rules on rankings in tennis have changed dramatically over the last 30 years. THe way the finals in AFL has been decided has been changed multiple times. In soccer, in the early 80s the number of points you got for winning a game changed from 2 to 3. Rugby even changed the number of points you get for a try to from 4 to 5 not all that long ago in order to try to encourage open field play.Dal_Santos_Gal wrote:exactly your opinion, but game rules change with any sport, but how the points system works is totally different, ladders (AFL,NRL NBL etc) or rankings (tennis, golf) it generally stays the same

I think its the best idea the AFL has ever come up with.... here is Adrian Anderson's explaination at the press conference:Richter wrote:Not sure what you're getting at here DSG. AA: If a team wins by more than 5 goals they get 5 premiership pts instead of 4pts, but only if they score more than 100pts in that game.
Media Question: Adrian does that mean that if a score is 99pts to 25pts a team will get 4pts even though they have played outside in the wind and rain at the G, AMMI, Gabba etc?
AA: Yes that right but thats not my department you will have to ask Jill about that one playing outside is Jill's department.
AA: they also get a bonus point if they are playing away from home in thier white clash strip and loose by less than 25pts.
Media Question: So are you saying that if a team plays in white and looses by less than 25pts they get a bonus point.
AA: yes thats right all teams playing in white will get a bonus point if the win or loose by more than 25pts and are playing outside and its raining, yes that what I said and if they are playing away from home, yes that right and thats what I said, yes, bonus pts, yes that right, Yes.
Media Question: So if a team plays at TD with the roof open and it rains and they are playing in white and they win by 25pts do they get 2 extra pts.
AA: let me just ask Jill, Jill, Jill if the roofs open and playing in white what do you think about 2pts.
Jill:I think we could consider that too, yes Jills ok with that too, yes lets do that, yes.
Andrew: Can we call it the Toyota Carolla, Nab, Luxbet extra pt, Gill call Abdul, sorry Ahmed, is he still at Nab, well tell someone at Nab.
AA: yes that is correct 2pts for the team playing in white at the dome with no roof playing in white who wins or looses by 25pts, so thats it everyone clear now, thanks.
Media Question: will there be an appeal process in place if a rushed behind on video review shows that a rushed behind should have been given as a free kick when it was only given as 1pt on the day and it should have been 6pts and the team only wins or looses by a 21pt margin, would you consider an appeal and review of the final margin and therefore total points awarded to the team.
AA: well that would only be considered if the team was playing in white in the rain or with the roof open at the Dome and Jill approved both the opening of the roof and the white clash jumper, we could look at that, so long as the Geash didnt think that the rushed behind was in fact a rushed behind, that should be ok as it wouldnt make and difference to the result and who gets the 4pts for a win anyhow.
Is everyone clear now, good.
AA: thinking (that went well)

I realllly hate to say it....and I truly truly hope the game evolves past all this zoning and like..but the crux of the problem is caused by all 18 players wandering over the ground. Perhaps, maybe, the time might come where something is dont to force forwards and their oppponents to stay inside 50..yes its netball (no offence meant you netballers!!) ...
Zoning, flooding, rolling clusters, whatever you call it...the common problem is having 36 players wandering freely all over the ground...and I hope some coaching Einstein works out a way around it soon
