Lyon down the law - from The Age

The coach called his playing group into a meeting and told them: "If you were relying on a 31-year-old champion to come in and try to win you a premiership, then you are kidding yourselves."

Lyon singled out a number of players - among them Luke Ball, Justin Koschitzke, Nick Dal Santo, Brendon Goddard, Leigh Montagna and the Clarke brothers, Xavier and Raphael - and delivered a blunt message. Lift your work-rate, lift your game and you are all capable of becoming champions. Stop looking to others. Lyon even put the hard word on Sam Gilbert and young David Armitage.

Good one, Ross. For me this is something that needed to be said publicly.

For all the talk of which youngsters will provide improvement I think the scope for improvement in our senior players - not speculative because there is a benchmark set by previous performance - is significant.

I like and respect RL more every time he opens his mouth. He seems to be a man of great integrity and belief. I hope he's at the Saints for 10 years.

I'm still in the 'talks a good game' camp. I want to see a reaction to the message. I would hope (am sure) this message has been delivered privately prior to now. I sort of expected RL to deliver a massive wake up call to the whole playing list when he arrived an have been disappointed by the (what seems to me) complacency throughout the list.

Anyway, he has put them under the spotlight now. And I'm rapt he's done it in such a public way.

Ahem...Luke doesnt bust his gut and doesnt put his body on the line time after time???? Understand the rest but to single Ball out? Hopefully Wilson put the wrong name in!

Good to hear he's put a rocket up a few of them, they need it!

Another issue is Reiwoldt and his anxiety problems - it's been an issue for him for years now from time to time.....generally it's not a problem, but we can't afford for him to go mentally missing in a finals again.

Perhaps he needs to do some meditation or yoga???
