Yeah, there's never ever been a valuable player come from the rookie list in the history of the whole wide world.rodgerfox wrote:Does anyone think there's the slightest chance we'll ever see some value from the Rookie Draft?

I much would have prefered that we took Deboer/Pearce instead of Dawson, but other than that it seems like a decent group of rookies.
We've now got plenty of young athletes (Howard, Haretuku, McGrath, Cahill, Gaertner) and hopefully we can manage to turn one of them into a footballer.
What has always worried me with Lyon is that he seems to love recruiting mediorce half backs/wingmen. We're constantly adding more hack to GOP standard runners and they don't seem to do anything (Dempster being the one exception). I'm glad we've finally picked a quick small forward.
2009 will be an interesting year.
Likely starting 22
B: Gilbert, Hudghton, R.Clarke
HB: Ray, Maguire, S.Fisher
C: Gram, Hayes, Dal Santo
HF: X.Clarke, Riewoldt, Schneider
F: Lynch, Koschitzke, Milne
Foll: King, Ball, Goddard
Int: Baker, Begley, Blake, Montagna
Reserves (itallics should be AFL ready in '09 if needed)
B: Miles, Dawson, McGarry
HB: Howard, Simpkin, Geary
C: L.Fisher, Eddy, Smith
HF: Jones, Cahill, Steven
F: Gwilt, McEvoy, Heyne
Foll: Gardiner, McQualter, Armitage
Int: Connors, Gaertner, Haretuku, Stanley, Tungatulum
Inj: Allen, Dempster

I love all you experts that know exactly what 15 other clubs were thinking.True Blue Sainter wrote:My thoughts exactly. Nobody else would have taken Dawson & Howard - so why not leave them until the last 2 "live" picks? IMO, the re-drafting of Howard is pretty useless anyway, I don't think he has what it takes to play regular AFL footy. Fingers crossed he can develop though.Armoooo wrote:Gaertner... Meh...
I'm really disappointed we didn't go Deboer first round and Pearce second round...
There is no doubt that someone else would have taken Dawson.
Howard is another story but since we are apparently already going to pay him for 09 & 10 then he may as well be contributing in some manner.
Personally I think we have done very well in this ROOKIE draft. Keep in mind the rookie list is used for 2 purposes;
1. As a development stream for kids that have potential (Simpkin, Gaertner, Howard, Tungatulum, McGarry, McGrath) and
2. As a means of providing depth in position that can be suspect with an injury or two (Dawson).
The best thing is that we have added 13 players under 22 since the end of this season
1. Ray (22)
2. Lynch
3. Stanley
4. Heyne
5. Smith
6. Cahill
7. Begley
8. Dawson
9. Simpkin
10. Gaertner
11. Tungatulum
12. McGarry
13. McGrath
plus Howard.
All of these players are spread across a number of positions that gives us flexibility, succession planning and a few kids with real X Factor- Lynch, Heyne, Gaertner & Choo Choo.
That's an outstanding result as far as I'm concerned & will go a fair way to giving our core group a chance at a flag in a few years time.

I did not mean Geartner (who I see as more a KPP prospect). My reference to beanpole ruckman was the NSW Scholarship elevation McGrath to the Rooke list who is 208 cmn1ck wrote: Sorry sRr, could you explain what you mean by beanpole ruckman (Gaertner) contrasting with our other 200cm rucks?
The 200cm rucks I was referring to were McEvoy and Stanley who are both 200cm....and both capable of playing the ruck/forward role as both are good grabs.
I agree.n1ck wrote:
From what Ive read and seen, they are all decent 'project' prospects. Good athletically, all very mobile runners - but all have skill and 'smarts' deficiencies.
Well as mentioned above my comment was meant to be McGrath.n1ck wrote: How does Gaertner contrast to the other two?
However Gaertner I see more as a KPP (though yes in time perhaps a relief ruckman). Perhaps a potential Fletcher like Full Back in the making??
McGrath as the beanpole ruckman.
Mcevoy /Stanley as ruckman who can go forward.
Stanley is also reportedly more mobile than McEvoy...more of an athlete.

Milne would be considered by many to have delivered value.rodgerfox wrote:Does anyone think there's the slightest chance we'll ever see some value from the Rookie Draft?
Attard did the job last season (till his knee ruined his career). No star, but was doinga job.
Jones, Geary and Eddy all look useful.
Not convinced about Mini though.
