Simpkin pride of Colac
TOM Simpkin has seen first hand the highs and lows of playing AFL. His older brother Jonathan played for Sydney, but was delisted at the end of last year after only playing one NAB Cup game.
He now plays for Colac in the Geelong Football League and Geelong in the VFL.
Simpkin, 17, a star for the Geelong Falcons, said it was good to observe his brother's journey to the AFL ranks.
"Him getting drafted, that was good. (I) got to go up and see him a few times and watch him play and (see) the way of living," Simpkin said.
"It was a bit disappointing him getting delisted. It shows how tough it can be."
Simpkin, who lives in Colac in Victoria's Western District, is following his brother's path, playing for the Falcons.
Today the defender will line up for the Falcons against the second-placed Oakleigh Chargers at Skilled Stadium.
Simpkin grew up wanting to be a footballer.
His father Ian played with Colac and also dabbled in coaching, while the four boys all play.
"I've just come from the background of football players, really," Simpkin said.
Simpkin said playing for Vic Country, which will play South Australia in Round 4 of the under-18 national titles next weekend, was surreal.
"It's just a huge honour wearing the Big V," he said.
