Nick Heyne
A mate of mine is a cousin of his. Says he's a hard-running wingman/forward with CHF prospects and a great kid to boot. My mate's a Collingwood supporter but says the family is stoked he got to stay in Victoria.
Still waiting for closure ... if you get my drift.

Very Very excited about this kid, surprised he didn't go in the second round, would have gone 1st round most years IMO...
Addresses what IMO is our major structural weakness, and IMO he could possibly take Gwilt's posi on the forward flank...

He might be wasted with us! We haven't kicked it quickly long and direct into the forward 50 for some time.vacuous space wrote:He's no CHF. I think he's about Gram's size. Great left foot kick and he loves to kick. I think he had something like a 10:1 kick to handball ratio. Good size, good speed, good mark. I'm not sure at all how he managed to get to 48, but I'll take him.

CHF? He does not have the height. Only if he is as good as Darrell Baldock with Ian Stewart feeding him, then he can play anywhere.

If we were Melbourne or Freo, I'd be really surprised if he didn't get at least a handful of games. Despite what some people around here think, we've got a pretty good team, and it's not going to be easy for an eighteen year old to get selection. If he's needed though, I think Heyne could handle the step up.mick13 wrote:Is he good to start playing next year guys?

under our "safety first" policy, rioli would have been lucky to get more than a game or two.SaintWodonga wrote:Sounds like a match winner. Just reading the threads from when he was playing, everyone (at the time) did not expect him to go past 25. Gee wouldn't be nice to have one of the young guns come out and star just like Rioli did this year for the Hawks...
a serviceable and "acountable" hack would have been preferred.

Please explain how a forward line with Schneider and Milne in it is safety first?
Lyon also tried to have Roo, GTrain and Kosi all in the fwd line togther.. Safety first??? I think not.
Lyon gave Charlie a few goes as a medium fwd...but he was almost good enough but not quite.
The young Allen was also given a try....and no doubt will again.
So Lyon obviously wants more "specialist" forwards...and with Heyne and Tom we two very good selections to augment our forward line with.
Heyne a "Johnno" type...and Tom an "O'Keefe or " mini-Roo type'.

I would be guessing that apart from Begley that most of this years draftees will play little senior football in 2009.bigcarl wrote:

Allen and Steven up forward would be given first try IMO..(and I also expect X to be more focussed in 2009).
So unless Tom or Heyne absolutely fly....I would expect them to only get a game or two in 2009.

I watched those highlights of him from the Country v Tas match... while yes he has pace, there was no real vision of him spotting up targets or using good judgement. Nearly all video of him was gathering the ball and throwing it on the boot, kicking long.
While i love the excitement and usually do get wrapped up in the draft commotion, is this kid really that good? Why isnt there vision of him doing anything other than smacking it long?

what i'm really trying to say is we need to show a bit more daring both in team selection and in the way we play football.
we've invested in a youth policy which will not reap benefits unless we show some faith in the kids we've drafted.
obviously you never pick someone who hasn't earned a game, but if it comes to a choice between a "safe" journeyman hack and an emerging talent it's fairly straightforward i would have thought.
teams should be picked on form and ability. obviously seniority comes into it as well and sometimes you have to cut a guy some slack because he has runs on the board.
but sometimes i think we take the seniority thing a bit too far.

groupie1 wrote:got some examples of journeymen being picked ahead of young talent (who had earned a spot) in our 22? I'm sure one S Birss would suggest your argument is flawed.
i would have liked to have seen more games into armitage, allen and geary last season, for example, ahead of guys like ferguson, charlie gardiner and maybe birss.
look, it is difficult and a balancing act, i know, because we were trying to be contenders and to be honest, these guys didn't show a lot when they were selected.
it takes a while for them to feel at home at senior level and perhaps we didn't feel we had the luxury of giving them an extended run at it.
but at the same time, it is not much use having a youth policy if you are not going to put faith in the kids.
what you want is a group of confident kids coming through and putting pressure on all senior players to hold their spots. competition for places is very healthy and tends to get the best out of everyone.

Loves to slam it on the boot a bit in that footage...bit of a loopy kicking style though. Would love to see him belt the ball into the forward line and knock the wind out of them. But, early days for him...hard at it, and that's good to see.
Still, Mini was a star at this stage of his career too...guess only time will tell.
