no worries....TassieJones wrote:Alright guys, not a fan of Lynch. In the footage I've seen of him he had terrible (not just average) disposal and goal shooting. Courageous, good mark but more of a second round prospect in my opinion. Would have preferred Blease, Trengove or possibly Shoenmakers.
I'm not gonna write him off or anything of course, I realise our recruiters know better than me and I hope he tears it up for the Saints but I just think there were better available who suited our needs better.
p.s forgot to add no Carroll , No Cousin
suprised we went with a tall forward as our first round pick but it will be interesting to see how he is developed. Good speed and agrresion, full back anyone?

With Dempster having done his knee.....may be a fill in.
Also I have my doubts about Gwilt....so Begley is certainly an option down back.
He was named rookie of the year in 2007, so here's hoping.
have seen a bit of rhys stanley over last 2 years playing for west adelaide--the bio is wrong when it talks about playingfor eagles in reserves grand final
--very smart pick by saints as has tremendous upside although will need 2 years to put on muscle to compete against bigger bodied ruckmen
--think nick naitanui without the dreadlocks--almost as athletic but has better marking and disposal skills
--so many occasions he would run down and tackle pacy onballers
--is a ruckman with outstanding leap and also played a little bit as tall forward as west under 19s had 4 players over about 195cm
---in league game that he got injured he took an absolute hanger over the pack in the goal square
--very quick on the lead and pretty good kick-certainly better kick than naitanui
--tremendous potential but as always the test will be to put in the hard work and to develop consistency

Ok, so who looks likely to play next year, if anyone?
Lynch looks ok on Utube. Would he be ahead of Allen?
TBH, I don't know alot about these guys, so don't make fun of me.
Wouldn't mind seeing him up forward a bit. Seems to have some pace.

He sounds ike the protype for the modern "midfielder" ruckman.

Great draft sainters...
We needed skills createtivity around goals and a bit of aggression and got it all. Interesting draft strategy taken by the SAINTS I dont believe they are thinking that KOSI is a long term option either rucking or playing at Full Forward.
LYNCH - great move - bit of mongrel.
STANLEY - Most highly skilled ruckmen in draft.
HEYNE - Goal kicking flanker can play midfield.
SMITH - Solid midfielder with bit of dash.
CAHILL - Next Full Forward or Full Back
BEGLEY - Releases GRAM/GODDARD.

Well Begley is a ready to play player....so he will be beter pressure on to grab a back 6 spot. I could easily see him getting selected ahead of Gwilt for example.WayneJudson42 wrote:Ok, so who looks likely to play next year, if anyone?

The others are all more for the future IMO..who might get an occasional game in 09.
You would imagine that Armo, Steven, Geary, Eddy.....Eljay would all be given preference for senior games in 2009 to our latest batch of recruits.
If Allen does not take his chance in 09...then Tom may be given some games.
Maguire failing...and Max getting injured might also see them getting exposure down back.

6 picks live picks still left to be used in the pre season draft
1 Melbourne
2 Port Adelaide
3 Essendon
4 Carlton
5 Brisbane
6 Richmond
Conditional upon the clubs demonstrating that they have room in their total player payments cap.
If Nathan Carroll wants a guernsey he needs to go train with one these.
Same applies to Ben Cousins, only these teams can pick him.
Then there will be the rookie draft.
Before then teams can pre-select international rookie player selections.

I just checked saints.com.au - it has a reasonable summary of each
with comments from Jason McCartney
I think he was/is part of the AFL AIS camp
Interesting summaries on where he thinks each can play
Lynch - I thought it might have been good to let him play at centre half-back and just let him play his way into some form, but he played at half-forward and did very well.
Stanley - He took some sensational marks in the SANFL where he actually just leapt on top of the pack and came down with it.
Heyne - He single-handedly nearly won the game for Vic Country against Vic Metro in the first game of the under-18 championships
Smith - He’s got the pace to play in the midfield and he’s definitely got the skills
Cahill - Paul's really a fantastic athlete. He's got a fantastic vertical leap...he's got great bounce and agility
BEgley - looks like we pinched him from the Pies ?

The pies last pick was at pick #73 (Leigh Brown - North Melbourne)
They had no other picks available.....
and we picked up Begley with our last pick at pick #83

Agree re Tom. Suspect that Armo will get more game time, and Stevens will get the same on /off as Armo did this year.saintsRrising wrote:Well Begley is a ready to play player....so he will be beter pressure on to grab a back 6 spot. Forgot about Begley. The logic is that he'd cover for Dempster? Obviously more upside (ahte that word) than Caroll.
