I thought I heard this morning that one of the Lions major sponsors had a real issue about Cousins and said they'd pull the pin if any advances were made on BC (I thought they confirmed a week or so ago that Cousins was out of the picture anyway???? Again, that's Voss for you- he'd be pushing for it like crazy!)
So people are quick to dimiss a journalist for saying that we have salary cap constraints, yet they easily believe that Voss "allegedly" went on some secret trip to W.A to speak with Cousins.

Get used to it....if we take him it will be about BC all year. Many of "our boys" will be upset at the focus on Ben that is bound to come.

Also demanding big $$$'s will cause problems.

one of their minor sponsors that only puts in 300k said they didnt want brisbane to sign him but brisbane never said they were out of the race.

but hopefully one of their major sponsors has issues about BC aswell

$262,500 (the cap increase) is roughly what he will be on as a base.

We don't know what he has "demanded" as far as $ goes, in fact because of the professional approach and handling of this matter by the Saints so far, we don't actually know much at all....

As far as "the boys" being upset, this isn't high school....

well ashuming we get him we will probaly sign him on a 1 year deal. now if we're are already pushing the salary cap limit, at the end of 09 BC will want a pay increase which we will most likely not be able to afford unless we re-jig current contracts. so i say we have to start him on 200k max but something around 150k should be wat we give him

I've got no idea what state our salary cap is in, but have a fair idea on how Voss operates. I’m not jumping on any media bandwagon. When they (the media) said the Lions weren’t interested in Cousins, and as soon as I heard Voss’s name mentioned my gut-feeling on the issue told me a different story. I'm very suss on Voss!

When they created LENNY HAYES (in the shadow of Harvs) they forgot to break the mold (again)- hence the Supremely Incredible Jack Steven!!

this is a good opportunity to do one of my favourite things. write down the player list, an estimate of salary, and try to keep it below the cap. its harder than people think. the dreamteam diehards know that. i know there are contracts that are back ended and front ended.

i remember a few years back i was on a flight from melb to perth and sitting next to graeme (gubby) allen, the lions footy manager. he said that player payments and the cap were the hardest thing. mind you, at the time he was on the end of three straight premierships!!!

its speculative.
no-one outside of carlton and the AFL know exactly what Judd is on...
....all we know is that its more than Fevola.

given that our team list isnt finalised and things like contracts are not public knowllege there is no way anyone besides the stkilda officals know how we are going in regards to salary cap issues it seems to me in the last few weeks the media are tring to make St Kilda look silly in regards to the whole BC saga could it be that the media have an agenda ???

Re: Cousins Salary Cap Issue

Post: # 676703Post vacuous space »

Year after year St Kilda is among only a few clubs that are excluded from the pre-season draft not because of lack of list vacancies but because of salary cap constraint.
This is total crap. Last year we were excluded because we had no list spots, the year before we took Matty Clarke. I can't remember the last time we entered a season with a short senior list.

It is possible we have salary cap problems though. We have a lot of older players outside our best 22 on the list. We have lost cap room in Fiora and Howard. That as well as the number of highly drafted, high profile players on our list should mean that we're, at the very least, operating at the top of the cap.

Plus, we don't have token jobs at Visy to throw at players. Maybe Benny can become a doors and windows consultant.

Yeah nah pleasing positive
How can this Barrett rabbit have any idea about St.Kilda's salary cap and player payment situation when there are currently only 33 players on the senior list and 3 rookies??!!
It is rather simple actually
St Kilda needs $294,500 to meet the minimum payments for the 6 main draft recruits, and $99,600 for 6 more rookies = $394,100
St Kilda needs to be under $7,299,650 now, to be able to make all 12 selections.

Therefore however much St Kilda is under this figure is available to pay Cousins &/or Carroll above the minimum of $62,700 plus $2,700 per match.

Unless the club agrees to pay a player more, these are the minimum

Base payments
Existing player more than 2 years, 29 players = $62,700 x 29 = $1,818,300
Existing veteran player, 1 player = $62,700 x 1 x 50% = $31,350
2nd year 1st round pick, 1 game 2008, 1 player = $59,300 x 1 = $59,300
2nd year 3rd+ round pick, 0 game 2008, 2 players = $48,700 x 2 = $97,400
2009 1st round pick, 1 player = $55,500 x 1 = $55,500
2009 3rd+ round pick, 5 players = 47,800 x 5 = $239,000
2009 rookies, 3 already on rookies list = $33,200 x 3 x 50% = $49,800
2009 rookies 6 to be drafted, 6 rookies = $33,200 x 6 x 50% = $99,600

Match payments
22 matches x 22 players = $2,700 x 22 x 22 = $1,306,800
Note match payment for McEvoy = $3,000 and Steven & Connors each $2,900

Total minimum payments = $3,757,050

Total player payments cap = $7,693,750 of which 92.5% = $7,116,719 must be paid.
Available payments over the minimum = $3,936,700

I think you'll find rookies aren't counted under salary cap

If we do have a salary cap problem then we are definitely definitely definitely over paying some players.

This group of players has not earned the right to max out against the salary cap.
They only earn that right by winning a premiership.
i hope not. apart from the big 4, - roo, sam fisher, bj and lenny - we should not be paying anyone else above average wage. dal, ball and kosi aint dont nothing yet.

Yes Sax you are right.
A rookie only counts as 50% if he is a nominated rookie (making up the number of players to 40).

Revision
St Kilda needs $294,500 to meet the minimum payments for the 6 main draft recruits, and $0 for 6 more rookies = $311,100
St Kilda needs to be under $7,432,450 now, to be able to make all 12 selections.

Therefore however much St Kilda is under this figure is available to pay Cousins &/or Carroll above the minimum of $62,700 plus $2,700 per match.
