People who thnk he was "soft" even by this strange "AFL players are judged differently" criteria IMHO need to start watching football a bit more closely
clearly as you never saw him squib it once, you need to start watching AFL more closely... Probably averaged about one pullout per game at the end of his career...

i think people will always disagree over his value as a player but we can all separate aaron firoa footballer from aaron fiora - human being - and wish him the best of luck with whatever he wants to do next.

seems like a good bloke. never done anything wrong. took some great speccies in his career which wil be great for the highlights tape...

i think there are lessons the club has learnt in 2008:

1. never sign fringe players for more than 1 year at a time;

2. no-one is safe on the list - contracted or not - everyone must perform and everyone is on notice (this was exemplified when milne and dal were dropped).

Thanks and good luck to you Aaron.
Well said sunsaint...

Yep that was my gripe re Birss ....

Just because he was an outside player, many people label him as soft...

I just hated the rants from the MW chanting "Why Why Why Fiona" ...

Were other outside players in the past labeled as "soft"??

Aussie Jones was an outside player, did anyone label him as "soft"??
Or Gram for that matter.

Never been a rap for the guy on the field, dont know the guy off it.So I am happy to see a spot open up for a youngster ,who MAY end up another Harvey or a Fiora .Good decision IMO

Was the right decision in the end, Fiora showed glimpses of being a good player in his time at the club, but unfortunately for him these were few and far between. We've now turned over 10 players on our list, which is quite a large amount for a team that finished 4th. However with the exception of Birss, all the delistings that took place were justified, and so this enables us to stock up on kids, some of which will hopefully have long careers at the Saints. Best of luck for 2009 and beyond, Fizz.

The news didn't surprise me in the least.
He has he had plenty of chances to try to consolidate his spot as a top 18 players, but fringe dwelling can't go on forever.

Good luck to him in the adult entertainment biz

Was Fiora soft as a Junior????

Reason I ask is because he was rated in the top 5 Juniors in the country....very impressive achievement if one is soft.......

or is that just made up CRAP......

Exactly...Fiora was never soft...

I remember games where he got wacked in the head several times and he kept going in...

I think some forget that AFL is ELITE....players have to step up hugely to make it.

Fiora played 140 games...and was a "useful" player. He never became a star as per his early promise....but many many with that label do not either.

Just look at the top 10 players in each draft....many have actually had less success than Fiora.

Thanks for playing for the Saints. You have my thanks.....and best wishes for the rest of your life.

....which, even if true which it isnt, would make him 100 times harder than you...as he's played AFL and you havent tough guy

We all have opinions and it is always interesting to read the thoughts of fellow supporters but there's no need for personal attacks. Have you spoken to others who have played the game and what their thoughts are/were of Fiora? Try to find out what his ex coach, Danny Frawley, thought of his game. I only make comment of Spud in this instance because he finally made reference of his long time gripe about Fiora's weak contested efforts and inept attack on the ball on the airwaves after the Preliminary Final. I was away overseas and listened to the call and I admired the fact that Danny had the "guts" to publicly make his thoughts known (and he did it well by the way).
True, I may not have played football at the elite AFL level but that does not act as a measure of my "hardness" as you put it. I pride myself on my "hardness" to achieveing my life's goals. I am extremely driven in life, very successful in my chosen career and have a great personal life. I did it myself, with a lot of "guts & determination & hard work". An AFL playing career was never on the agenda for me, unlike Fiora. So, think before you make such comments. I especially like the "peanut gallery" one.
I wished Fiora made a go of his career at St.Kilda but the truth is his mental and physical approach to his "chosen career" was quite poor and simply not good enough. I have always and will always be a realist when it comes to seeing the good and the bad at the St.Kilda Football Club (and that's how I go about it with my percetions in life too). He was given plenty of oppotunities at his second AFL Club and I repeat, "he only has himself to blame for the delisting".

And he can be PROUD of a TEN year career in elite level sport!

He has done what a small percentage of footballers who dream were/are able to achieve....

say what you want, fact is he has actually been there and done it......

Nearly every player gets delisted at the end of their career, it's how long you last which is the measure...

excellent post SS. Frawley has nicely summed up what I saw in Fiora as soft. Weak in contests and no fierceness at the footy. Also tended to lose his feet way too easily as soon as the sniff of a contest was in the air.
Yep, in these ways he was soft as an AFL footballer. Any reference or comparison between Fiora you, me or anyone else not wanting to be an AFL player is completely irrelevant.

Aaron Fiora was tarred as soft because of a few games early in his career at Punt Road.

He dropped his head, he was physically not as strong as his opponents and his body couldnt hold up to AFL footy.

Richmond supporters used that agains him for the rest of his career. It wasnt his fault he was selected that early (before Pav) in the draft.

At St.Kilda, Fiora certainly wasnt soft. He backed into packs, he ran the lines, he kicked long and he put his body on the line. He did get pushed off the ball at times because hes not a physical player, but he didnt squib the contest. Far from it. While at the club he worked very hard to show that he wasnt soft. It was his inconsistency at finding and using the ball effectively that cost him his job at Moorabbin.

He is a bloke thats been unfairly tainted because of a few incidents as a youngster.

I wish him well in watever he does after footy.

Yeah what I have not liked about Fiora is that he has absolutly no impact on a game, I never doubted his courage...

Ridiculous post IMO saintau66 from someone who is usually reasoned in response.

I played the sum total of ‘0’ AFL games, does that make me soft or is my opinion just less valid?

The reason I did not play AFL had nothing to do with ticker, it was the same reason I didn’t open the batting for Australia and win the World Middleweight Crown or run the 100 at the Olympics.....I wasn’t good enough, gifted enough, fast or talented enough to compete at any sport at the highest level...probably like most on this forum my desire well outweighed my ability (or distinct lack thereof).

Well done Fizz.
140 games! Fantastic effort and most of them were played whilst being run down by your own supporters (Richmond and StKilda).
People comment on your courage but IMO that in itself says a lot about your character.

suprised but right move, perhaps gives a little inkling that we will take cousins if he passes the re-registering tests.

agree with joffa, the thing missing from fiora was his hunger for the contest. Some people have a natural ability to hunger for the contest, to push themselves beyond what they think is possible. Fiora had the skills and ability to play that outside hard running game but he didn't gut run. Compare eddy's work rate to fiora and you will work out why one got cut and one got a senior contract. Pure ability will get you drafted but to be a good AFL player you need more then your pure ability, you need to be able to beat your man, get to more contests and win them. Fizz never did.

I wish him well, but he was never going to improve and currently he was not up to AFL senior standard. Will probably go over to south australia and play very well in a lower level.
