Harvey says avoiding working with his team-mates was a big factor in his decision to take a job at Carlton, rather than signing up with the Saints.
"St Kilda offered me a couple of roles and I suppose I was pretty keen, but I want to find out whether my future's in footy," he said.
"The easy thing would have been to work at St Kilda but I don't think that would have given me the answer on where I wanted to be in 12 months' time.
"From the players' point of view, they've seen me so much for the last few years so I reckon it was just best for them if I stayed away and someone fresh came in."
The 383-game veteran admits it will be tough to coach against his beloved Saints.
"Obviously I'd love to see St Kilda win a flag in the next five years," he said.
"I reckon we've still got the list to do it and that's where my heart is, but once I start with Carlton helping them will be my aim."

Modern AFL footballers will never know what it is like to play in front of passionate suburban crowds and the game is poorer for it, according to dual Brownlow medallist Robert Harvey.
