Shane Birss delisting....
Birss....... must be very, very unlucky.
Played a forward defensive role on Heath Shaw and held him to less than ten touches while kicking three goals and barely gets another similar opportunity all season.
I think he would have done a better negative role on Hodge in the Prelim than the likes of Eddy.
I am no big fan of Birss but I think he is of AFL standard and good depth.
There are IMO players with much less value than Birss that have been retained.
Other than pursuing the lovely Mrs Lyon or internal infringement that the average fan is not privy to, I can not understand why this guy has been cast aside.

Proudly assuming the title of forum Oracle and serving as the inaugural Saintsational ‘weak as piss brigade’ President.

I suppose that with the recruiting of Ray, and possible recruitment of BC, we needed to look at offloading a mid or two.....
Any of these could have gone....
Fiora - very lucky to have another year on his contract. Likely delisting next year
Fisher - perhaps his capacity to play as a defender has saved him. With Dempster own, Leigh may have an opp. to press his case for inclusion next season?
McQualter - younger, RL clearly favoured him over Birss this year (?why)
CJ - ditto
Attard - GONE
Howard - shown nada at AFL level, but contracted and still young. Would need to show something next year to stay on for another year though

youngens were palyed ahead of him and at times they looked out of their depth do i guess that shows where birss was heldJeffDunne wrote:I reckon he was unlucky but if the coach isn't going to play him then why keep him?
Can't see much improvement on what he's shown so far. If that's not good enough or what they want from him then it makes sense to move him on.
"It's a work in progress," Lyon said.

Extremely stiff. I was on his back last year but he showed this year from limited opportunities that he was more than capable of providing solid back-up at short notice.
Should have been kept while other less talented and dependable players should have released.
A poor decision.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

I am not that surprised Birss has been delisted.
I was surprised when he was drapped, recalled and re-dropped last season. Seemed to have done nothing wrong. I really liked him. (More than some others who were selected)
There is obviously something RL doesn't rate about him. We must remember that we only see them two hours a week and there's a more to being an AFL player that just getting a kick. (Not suggesting any inside info...)

unlucky IMO. Maybe just the luck, or lack of it, of a guy like Fiora having another year of a contract.
For mine, Fiora is extremely lucky to be given another year on a senior list.
Birss at least had a willingness to go in and get the footy.
Fiora - a waste of a spot on the list and it buggers me why Lyon and co keep on giving him a chance.

More than happy with the delistings, as hard as it is NONE of these players will be missed in 09.
I do hope that Birrs gets picked up again as I think he is the best out of our delistings.
No more Rix rocks Rux which will be missed on here
Thanks to all players and good luck to you

Yep. Reckon that will have been a factor. Perhaps a lack of pace for Birss was a problem?? Just seems to me he would have attracted some interest at the trade table if they were going to delist him anyway..SaintWodonga wrote:He was unlucky... I would have kept him. I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

I know he was slow. But the guy was competitive. i remember going to some games where were getting bullied and birss and lenny were the only 2 blokes who stood up and flew the flag when some of our guys were getting beat up. at least he has some mongrel, competetive spirit in him. more than i can see for most of our team.
