If Ben Cousins and the saints agree on terms etc etc why can't they or him announce it publicly that he only wants to join the saints, then once he is cleared by the AFL again can the saints then say to the AFL that we will guarantee to pick up cousins with our first pick in the pre season draft, im sure this has been done before where one club has signed an uncontracted player prior to the PSD and in doing so guaranteed to pick him up, this would then remove all doubt about us getting Ben or am I being too simplistic about the whole thing ?????

Because there is no free agency and what you propose is against current Draft Rules.

They can however agree on terms.....but if another club with an earlier pick agrees to those terms too they can exercise their pick on him first if they have an earlier pick.

regardless of fg being a great clubman he apparenly has a natural football brain so hopefully this could be used to get results in a coaching capacity

who cares about the clubman aspect surely we just want results?
