How much of that was due to a person who should not be mentioned again on this forum, but was coach at the time?
It was a combination of the collective abilities of Grant Thomas, Rod Butterss & Brian Waldron. All three are to be congratulated for the way they handled that situation !!
Out of interest, I looked up some of the old articles on this (there are plenty of them still accessible through a Google search)

GT, as was his style, took control of it all early on: charging out to help the players when they rang him, taking care of them for the next 24 hours or so. Waldron handled the statements to the press, with some involvement from GT.

Butterss's main contribution was largely to keep well away it all, which (depending on how you feel about Butterss) could be interpreted either as a case of his not wanting to tarnish his image with Demetriou and other AFL heavies, or else a sensible decision to leave the matter in the hands of the coach and the CEO (the truth is probably a combination of both).

Anyway, it's all history now.

I must admit I always have a chuckle when I hear Ricky Nixon talking about the issue of drugs . . . and that's all I'm prepared to say about that!

You'd think Brisvegas and the seedy allure of the Gold Coast would make the Lions a bad option for Ben....

Lance or James??

An aside issue, but is it actually possible to lay a bet on which club he'll end up at, or do betting agencies just announce the odds to capitalize on the publicity?... I cant find much on.

Ricky Nixon as as a player manager is in a very interesting bargaining position with teh Saints at the moment.
Apart from handling Ben Cousins, he also manages
NIck R (signed up)
Nick Dal (signed Up)
Jason Gram (signed up)
Raph CLarke (signed up)
X Clarke (unsigned as yet)

plus who knows how many more.
Interesting Hypothetical for Ricky?

We say we want BC (and we'll match any other offer on the table for him from other clubs)
And to sweeten the deal we'll accomodate X Clarke on a new deal, allowing him to stasy at Saints with his brother where he is comfortable and probably on more than he would get if he has to go into the draft.

Not saying it would happen but it may be a bargaining chip?

Who manages Michael Gardiner?

it's always interesting to read the player managers websites and see who is managed by them- Ricky currently has almost 1/3 of the saints -
I'm looking forward to reading more in " The draft" about how the young guys are approached and then choose a manager,

I think you'll find that most of the top 20-30 names have all had conversations with most of the player manager groups well before Draft day.
They (the player managers) keep as close an eye on upcoming talent as the CLubs do - -afterall today's draftee may well be tomorrow's superstar and if you get tehm early you tend to keep them.

ONE club wants to present a plan to the AFL commission on how it intends to help Ben Cousins win his battle with drug addiction. The 30-year-old, who is nearing the end of a 12-month suspension for bringing the game into disrepute, needs to gain approval from the commission next month to be allowed to return.
Cousins' manager Ricky Nixon said Collingwood, St Kilda and a non-Victorian club had all expressed interest in the former West Coast skipper.

One of the clubs - Nixon declined to specify which one - had gone to the extent of developing a plan to help with Cousins' rehabilitation and wanted to put it before the commission as part of the case for his return.

"A club yesterday presented to me a fairly detailed plan of how they think they can assist Ben in football and life going forward," Nixon told Melbourne radio station SEN today.

etc etc

thats a load of crap

Glass houses mates....

We have had some excellent recruits in recent years with some lower picks...

You have to remember that our first pick is usually out side of the top 10...

Jeez even a pick outside of the top 3 must seem like a foreign concept to you...

Pendlebury > Murphy
Selwood > Gibbs
Cotchin > Kreuzer

Then there's Jordan Russell and Andrew Walker. And the second round onwards.

As of last week, Collingwood was his preferred destination after meeting with the players and coaching staff recently, and according to a friend at Collingwood, they have put forward a proposal to help with his rehabilitation. Collingwood have been a bit quiet regarding Cousins lately, but that's understandable because he hasn't been re-registered by the AFL yet, but if he is permitted to enter the December draft, then I expect Collingwood to announce their interest then, and not before then. It could come down to who has the earlier draft pick between Collingwood and St.Kilda, and because St.Kilda beat Collingwood in the Semi Final, it means that Collingwood will most likely pick him first. If so, then reuniting Cousins with Michael Gardiner would not have been a wise choice anyway.

I beg to disagree. Nixon's comments regarding a club "with their own problems" has Collingwood written all over it.

Whether it is St Kilda or Brisbane who made the impressive presentation remains to be seen.
