interview with ricky nixon
anyone hear ricky on SEN half an hour ago? Heard it on the way home and a few things he said re: benn boy was VERY interesting.
One club has been scared off in the past 48 hours because of what was said about losing flags and points if a player tests positive on match day. But nixon suggested that this club had alot of their own problems (not drugs) to deal with and thus he believed they would not be the best club for ben to make his come back with. (you could tell that this club is collingwood, KB asked in a round about way and it was obvious that it was the pies).
On the otherhand he said one club had come to him with a professional plan on how they would go about not only supporting ben as a player but as a person. This included bringing in people he respected to mentor him and support him through this. Nixon was very impressed, with alot of the content of this plan going beyond anything nixon had thought of.
Also talked about how the media seems to always forget that ben was never suspended for taking drugs, it was his other actions that lead to the suspension and de-registration. Also mentioned about how suprised he was about what drug addiction can do to a person.
Very very interesting interview. For a guy I really had no respect for, nixon came across as someone who had bens interest at heart, wanting him to get back to playing the sport he loves but not at the expense of his wellbeing.
Couldn't help but think that ben will end up with us. I would be very proud if our club was the one with the detailed plan.

Thanks for the report Solar, and agree with your comment about the detailed plan.Solar wrote:I would be very proud if our club was the one with the detailed plan.
I am still opposed to his recruiting, purely on my doubts on the football side (30yo, long time out of the game, hamstrings, etc.), but if the Saints have put up this plan, then that would be pretty impressive.

I think it's a credit that a club would look at the holistic health of a player. Sounds like this will be needed in an age where the flag could be lost by a positive drug test....SENsaintsational wrote:Thanks for the report Solar, and agree with your comment about the detailed plan.Solar wrote:I would be very proud if our club was the one with the detailed plan.

The one thing Ross has stated over and over is that Ben's health is the priority... makes me think it could be us, and from a purely tactical side it makes sense that as the outside club we had to find a way to go the extra mile....
Yes, it could be a case of be careful what you wish for, but gee i'd be pumped if we pulled it off.

I got the impression the club came out of the blue with this planSENsaintsational wrote:Very impressive to look at the bigger picture, no matter who the club is.
Since only Collingwood and St Kilda have been mentioned, you'd have to think it was us with the detailed plan.
Kudos if true.
could be a number of clubs.

Re: interview with ricky nixon
i cant see who we would have at our club that benny would respect to be a mentor ? you could of said Harves but a) hes not here anymore and b) in the past Ben hasnt reallys shown any respect towards anyone in our team....... maybe Fraser ?? you wouldnt really consider MG as a mentor ....... i dont know i have a feeling we are not the team who has put forth the good plan with Voss at the lions i reckon it could be their plans ??Solar wrote:

I caught the tail end of the interview. I think it would be much better for our club if we worked WITH Ricky Nixon, as opposed to working against him. The reason Nixon polarises the footy community is his passion for who/what he represents, and the fact that he knows what he is on about and doesn't take crap from anyone !!

Barker & Rock have left. Greg Hutchison was appointed to Casey by St Kilda, so we might retain him. I think we will appoint 1 or 2 others, but time is running out to lure those of quality who are available !!Ice Wolf wrote:We do have coaching positions vacant.markp wrote:Could mean bringing in anyone from anywhere.st_Trav_ofWA wrote:i cant see who we would have at our club that benny would respect to be a mentor ? you could of said Harves but a) hes not here anymore and b) in the past Ben hasnt reallys shown any respect towards anyone in our team....... maybe Fraser ?? you wouldnt really consider MG as a mentor ....... i dont know i have a feeling we are not the team who has put forth the good plan with Voss at the lions i reckon it could be their plans ??Solar wrote:

role models for ben would make our new forwards coach and midfield coach to be the following .....Ice Wolf wrote:We do have coaching positions vacant.markp wrote:Could mean bringing in anyone from anywhere.st_Trav_ofWA wrote:i cant see who we would have at our club that benny would respect to be a mentor ? you could of said Harves but a) hes not here anymore and b) in the past Ben hasnt reallys shown any respect towards anyone in our team....... maybe Fraser ?? you wouldnt really consider MG as a mentor ....... i dont know i have a feeling we are not the team who has put forth the good plan with Voss at the lions i reckon it could be their plans ??Solar wrote:

why would you be shocked if we were the club that came up with the plan??? We seemed to have managed our players better then most in the past 5 yearsevertonfc wrote:Hope we recruit Ben and I'd be shocked if we came up with the plan, but it would be fantastic if this was the case.

As for B.Cousins - RL is correct, his health is No.1 concern. Football is fleeting - even for Robert Harvey. Cousins will have to battle his addiction for the rest of his life.
If he is fit and if playing football at the STKFC can help him, and we also get a return, well I am all for it. Dont talk premierships, lets talk character and integrity.
I would see the positives for both B Cousins as a person and the STKFC is an organisation if we can mutually benefit each other. If we can help that would be great. it would also be great for the playing list to know that hteir footy club would go out of their way to support them if they were to also get into difficulty.
Ask Milne and Montagna what they think of the club and the way their trouble and issue was dealt with.
Good luck to B Cousins whether he plays with us or not.
Lance or James??

It was a combination of the collective abilities of Grant Thomas, Rod Butterss & Brian Waldron. All three are to be congratulated for the way they handled that situation !!GrumpyOne wrote:How much of that was due to a person who should not be mentioned again on this forum, but was coach at the time?joffaboy wrote: Ask Milne and Montagna what they think of the club and the way their trouble and issue was dealt with.

I also heard the interview this morning and immediately thought about Burkes comments last week when he said Cousins would be discussed at a board meeting this week.
Ricky Nixon also said that the club involved suggested putting their proposal to deal with Ben to the AFL commision and make it part of the deal if he was to be re-registered.
Nixon thought that was a great idea.
