AFTER LOSING assistant coaches Todd Viney and Barry Mitchell to Adelaide and Fremantle respectively, Hawthorn has made some ground by acquiring former key position player John Barker.

Barker, a popular figure with teammates and supporters, played 112 games and kicked 113 goals in nine seasons with the Hawks, and since his retirement at the end of 2006 has spent two years as an assistant coach at St Kilda under Ross Lyon.

However, he will resume as an assistant with the Hawks from the start of pre-season training in November.

"It’s been a fantastic experience to be part of the coaching group at the Saints after finishing my playing career," Barker said in a statement released by St Kilda on Saturday.

"Ross Lyon gave me a great opportunity to work with a strong forwards group and I’ll always be grateful for this.

"The romance of returning to the club that I played most of my career for was too good to refuse."

Barker's playing career commenced with Fitzroy in 1994 and included a brief stint in Brisbane after those two clubs merged.

John Barker has gone. All the best to him (except against us).

More importantly is what these coaching depatures will do to/for our playing group. I think it will be a GOOD thing for our guys, and that is without any knowledge of who their replacements will be, and it has NOTHING to do with the two guys who are departing.

The club will make the necessary appointments within the next few weeks and we need to trust them to make the right choices. These "NEW" assistant coaches will go a long way towards refreshing the group with NEW voices & NEW ideas. Add that to up to six list changes and up to 3 or 4 NEW rookies and the group will take on a whole new dynamic. It is then up to Ross, Matty Drain and the club to make it all work !!

he is such a sweety i love him and am over the moon he is back he would have helped your guys don't worry about that now he is home all is good in the world , i am happy that when he did go for a little while it was not to the pies or some where filthy like essendon you guys are fine and i did not mind him coming over here thanks for looking after him for the time you had him .

Im wrapt to be getting some new blood in - I just hope in some of this we get some experience in. I do believe Terry Daniher for all his "to laid back" faults knew how to get a group of guys to work as a unit within a team. We need that. Our fwd line looks uncoordinated, players run to wrong spots and pressure at times non existent.

Maybe Gehrig did throw the plans....but I am yet to see Kosi/Riewoldt function up fwd together and Barker had ample time to work on that.

I used to be a Fitzroy fan - John Barker was one of our fav sons...just glad hes gone back to his adopted home to broaden the coaching training.

i wonder how much of that was down to barker and how much down to:

1) the numbers-behind-the-ball edict.

2) the cattle at his disposal after roo, milne, schneider and kosi, and

3) a defence-first mindset throughout the team.

he certainly was okay for us last time. never could work out why we moved him on.

of course, in those days, he had two gun key forwards - gehrig and riewoldt - to help out.

What really makes me laugh is that the previous coach is supposed to have gotten us to a prelim in 2004 on the back of "talent alone", but our forward line was a result of the genius known as Terry Daniher.

FWIW, our forward setup was screwed before Barker (& Lyon) arrived.

They simply haven't done anything about fixing it (unless you call Charlie Gardiner & redrafting Gehrig as doing something about it)

Other than adding midfield depth, fixing our forward setup is our most pressing need. Hopefully we'll find someone with a proven track record in this area.
