Interesting....and shouldn't that be Gardiner to tear it apart in 09?

As for the move, if true, it makes sense.

Not sure why the Hawks would rate him given his track record with us. I really do think we need a decently experienced forward coach that will explain to Ross the pitfalls of running up and down the ground on forward structure, and actually develop a way to exploit that to our advantage. Barker seemed to be working with an old style forward structure with a new style gameplan.

I guess Elshaug and Silvagni have stayed, and Lyon was an assistant at Carlton and Sydney for 3 years at both places ... so he can't be too hard to work with.

Disappointed we lost Rock, but glad we will get some new blood in Barker's place.

If Nathan Thompson was interested, I'd give him a call ...

nathan thompson would be awful to work with

he screams of arrogance yet achieved nothing apart from being that guy who was depressed (and no im not having a go at him for it its a bloody serious issue and effects us all)

i really don't think anyone would be interested in him

Thompson is a great leader and a sensational bloke to boot ... one of the nicer guys you will meet in football.

Has a wealth of life and football experience, having played under three different coaches and played deep in finals on a number of occasions.

A hard worker and a very very good communicator.

He will most likely work in the media me thinks....I actually like his smug arrogance but each to their own.

There must be someone else though?

scott west doesnt seem the sharpest of tools

he seems like a player who would just do without thinking and get the job done...not really a thinker or one that possesses a clever football brain

Thanks chook23, wasn't an article on its own, although I guess it wouldn't be worthy of one.

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/h ... 36725.html
The post-season exodus of assistant coaches at St Kilda has left Ross Lyon with two major gaps to fill after John Barker last night told the Saints he was accepting Hawthorn's offer to join the coaching panel of the reigning premier.

After Anthony Rock announced this week that he was also rejoining his old club, defence coach Stephen Silvagni is the only assistant who remains of the four-man panel that began as a fresh coaching quartet at Moorabbin in 2007.

Barker, a forward at Fitzroy, Brisbane Lions and Hawthorn, will replace Todd Viney, who left the Hawks after their premiership win and joined Adelaide.

Would love an ex-Brisbane Lions player ... Craig McRae, one of the Scott brothers, Nigel Lappin ...

Still maintain Nathan Thompson would be a good pickup, but his future probably lies in the media.

David Neitz?

Michael Braun?

Rohan Smith?

okay the way he comes across in the media he doesnt come across as someone too clever...a do-er not a thinker

some players are known for their football smarts...and he is not...just acommon perception

Nathan Buckley and Terry Daniher

So sue me for living in the past, but TD did amazing things with our forward line previously, and only got dismissed because of GT.

he did, but he had the benefit of two gun key forwards, riewoldt and gehrig.

at present we have only one. but td certainly has some runs on the board in this regard.

Did someone really suggest that Scott West was just an automaton footballer who just did it, not really a thinker or the sharpest tool?

I think that's what I read. So a bloke who plays 300 games, wins a multiplicity of B&F's, nearly a Brownlow when he's over 30, a shyteload of awards, and who did it with the athletic capability of a bloke from the front bar (i.e. couldn't run, couldn't jump, couldn't wrestle) was useless, eh?

What an arrogant crock of s***. Clearly the opinion of a true high achiever. Tosser.

im no doubting his achievements and they are truly special, what im saying is that he just went and did what he had to do...never came across as a thinker of football...a do-er, a natural

a coach surely needs to be a thinker with the ability to construct explanation...not someone who just went a did what they had naturally without thought and cannot communicate

What a freakin' crock. Are you serious? It was West's brain, vision and understanding of the game that allowed him to play 300+. Koutifidis just played, West had to learn it. Doesn't mean he'd be a great coach, but that's not down to a lack of player understanding.

Simple truth is when you're short, slow, can't kick over a jam tin and have no right hand side you must understand the game to survive.
