Correct, has been steadily improving in each season and at 22 there is plenty of time for more improvement IMObigcarl wrote:the kid is only 22 ... too early to make a judgement on him as the bulldogs have.
they take a while to come on and can surprise you. look at raph clarke's last eight weeks.
He may not be another Leigh Montagna, but Leigh started off slowly and look at him now...
Farren Ray is at least 2 years younger

Link to his career stats for those interested. Looks like a good pick-up IMO. Fairly injury free it seems too.

WOM's version I think might be Dylan Addison and not Farren.saintbrat wrote:so whose body?SaintBot wrote:saints.com.au quick to update the list.

Back on the thoughts of the trade, I personally find myself quite excited. Ray is still very young and being such a high pick he is worth persisting with to see if he develops.
Could be an absoulete bargain if one of the players we were tossing up with to pick at 31 slips to 47 then we have pretty much secured Ray for nothing.
Just checked out the bigfooty link someone posted above. Here's one particular highlight.....

The predrafting profile....
Anyhow, I'm happy.
Rodney Eade really sounds like one serious buffoon. And we will be the beneficiaries... thank you Rocket!scooter600x wrote: Ray wasn't soft, that's just bollocks.
He was an outside player but that doesn't make him soft. My only problem with him was his kicking (and the infuriating habit of running onto his left foot and then spraying the thing OOB).
He was a best 22 player for us and will certainly be a best 22 player for St. Kilda.
And before I get reminded about him being dropped after the Hawthorn game, he didn't get dropped for his performance (it wasn't great but he had plenty of mates) he got dropped because of a dummy stip with Eade at the review.
Eade gave him a spray, Ray didn't think he deserved it and the s*** fight that ensued was along the lines of "I want to be traded"; "You'll never play with this club again".

Hopefully he'll be an "inside outsider" for us. An area we need to improve. IMO our midfield's problem against the Hawks and the Cats wasn't getting first possession per se, it was getting first clean possession i.e. an effective clearance. The sort of job that Joey has matured into. Perhaps Ray will be like Joey and provide our mid with a bit more run and play on.Knackers wrote:Speed and stamina to burn. Lightning otm & over ground. Excellent overhead.
Disposal a worry.
---------------------
He's one of those "inside outsiders" - doesn't tend to sit under packs much. Tends to get a relatively low percentage of his possessions from being initially stationed inside traffic. Instead, he prefers to either receive out wide or swoop in and through the traffic. However he is definitely not outside in the usual sense of the word. Has courage to burn. Takes unbelievable risks to life and limb and doesn't shirk a contest. Tends to be regularly adjacent to play but seldom at the ball per se.
Anyhow, I'm happy.

I reckon he's a great pick-up, especially for a nett loss of 18 places in the draft.
Done his apprenticeship as Lyon said and until this year a regular part of the Dogs side. Will slot straight into our side I'd imagine. Quick with great stamina. Only played 13 games this year but still averaged nearly 20 possessions a game. Excellent work from Lyon and the footy dept. Very happy with this trade.

I'll withold my assessment until after the draft. Lets see who we miss out on at #31 first. Then we'll just see how Farran goes in 09.
I'm a bit 50/50 with this trade. Adding a bloke with disposal issues is the last thing we need. Roo will be doing backflips at the thought of having another bloke kicking half volleys to him. However he has speed & can carry the pill through the lines which is needed.
At 22 time is on his side & he can still show significant improvement if he works his arze off.

As long as you tell us who we missed before the season and not in hindsight like most seem to work on here.Animal Enclosure wrote:I'll withold my assessment until after the draft. Lets see who we miss out on at #31 first. Then we'll just see how Farran goes in 09.

Too true, I don't seem to remember everyone being as keen for Cyril Rioli and Joel Selwood this time in the last 2 years...plugger66 wrote:As long as you tell us who we missed before the season and not in hindsight like most seem to work on here.Animal Enclosure wrote:I'll withold my assessment until after the draft. Give the kid a chance? Or will you continue your life as a keyboard hero, sooftcokk loser?Trunch wrote:Another Sharon !! soft at the man, soft at the footy, "a quick winger and good overhead". Ahigh draft pick in his year. Sound like any one?

At the very least he has the one thing we lack more than anything - pace. Might not be the greatest player but he's not the worst and we didn't have to give much to get him.
No doubt in 12 months someone will come up with a list of the superstars that were still available at pick 31 that he cost us. Right now it doesn't look like a bad deal.

First of all his disposal isnt bad
He has about 80% disposal rate which is one of the best in the comp
Like all fast players if they are running at full speed it is almost impossible to hit a target
Wojinski is crap at hitting a target as is Gram
Just be thankful we didnt go for just speed in Tenace

Well for a start he is currently better than Armitage, Eddy, McQualter, Jones, Allen and Fiora - all of whom played finals footy for us this year.doristhesaint wrote:Just what we need another light bodied soft mid who has poor disposal by foot .
Would love to be wrong but cant see us improving with him in the side
He's only 22, has played plenty of games, is ultra-fit, so far injury free. His frame seems like it could do with a bit more muscle so his best may be 3 or 4 years away yet.
And the price? 16 or so draft picks. Great value IMO
