Really, I can't see any good reason for this other than the idea that Cousins will play with him. Every time I have seen him in the red, white and black, it seems to me that nothing short of a bit of miracle faith healing by Billy Graham is going to get him fit enough to play AFL again at the required pace.
I would suggest to those posters who want to see King and Gardi playing in the same team that, if they like to watch their football in slow motion, they can do that by mucking around with their video recorder.

Never been a big fan of getting Michael Gardiner to the Saints, hence my reluctance to acknowledge his new contract.
He has played two decent games in 9 matches and we have paid him two years salary.
I would be surprised if he plays 9 matches next year...
I wish him well, but we would have been better off getting Jeff White for a one year contract than signing him up for another year IMO.
Again, 2 decent games and 2 years salary is not a good investment IMO

And I will be disappointed if, in order to keep him, we have to delist a Leigh Fisher (if he's considered to be "too slow for the modern game" then where does that place Gardi?) or a Shane Birss or a Jimmy Gwilt. And I will be especially pissed if Gardi ends up playing no more than 4-5 games.St Fidelius wrote:Never been a big fan of getting Michael Gardiner to the Saints, hence my reluctance to acknowledge his new contract.

And are we needing to pay him money that could otherwise given a deserved pay rise to a younger player?
Is this what it takes to get Cousins to our club? And is it really a good idea to have Cousins and Gardi together around all our younger players?
If we do get Cousins (and I certainly hope we do), I hope the club fully understands what a gamble they are taking. He might turn out to be the key to winning a flag, but he might also turn into a monumental headache.
If Gardi had gone bad again over the past two seasons we could have ushered him out fairly quietly. I doubt that we would have the same luxury with Benny....

Unfortunately meher baba I tend to agree, that's with the Leigh Fisher and Birss comment...
I would somehow doubt your thoughts re Gardiner and Cousins influence on the younger playing group outside football.
Again, I wish him well, but a wasted 1 year contract IMO...
He is not getting any younger and is not improving...
The best he had was gone 6 years ago IMO

To see that he has only played two decent games in two years??
Great to see that he has signed on for another year with his declining form??
or is it...
Great that his new contract means another certain delisting??
Or is it just great to see you post again???
Please elaborate ...
or is it that all we get is just a 2 to 5 word post from you all the time??

haha, his career was pretty much over then wasn't it, we have him a hope of playing footy again. He wouldn't have asked too much, and without having to do much I dont think hed be asking for too much either lol.meher baba wrote:In that case he must feel a bit like a guy who takes home a gorgeous woman only to find out that "she" is really a tranny.mick13 wrote:He came to the Saints just wanting to play footy

Yep we have done well signing him up for the 3rd year, haven't we???
Grabbing another players position on our list is more than enough for me IMO...
Again, in signing him it has cost a player, his position at the club, and if you consider 9 games in two years of which 2 were decent...
Waste of money...
He hasn't had a decent season in 5 years, and we sign him up again...
Yep, makes sense....
Just like ralphysaints35 posted...

He hasn't had his body right for 5 years and is getting older, nice to see your optimism though, even at a cost of another player

Rix??
Rix has the ability to play more games than Gardiner IMO...
Yes, Rix may go, and Gardiner may play 5 - 6 matches, both not worth a years salary IMO

how can you assume that Gards is going to play only 5 or 6 games?
if he gets his body right, he is in that team straight away.

I said when we recruited him that we'd be lucky to get half a dozen decent games out of him and it's looking on track for that at best.
I agree with Fid, he's finished and should have retired. When there was talk of him retiring at the end of this year I thought, "well that sounds right."
The club medicos must have faith in him though, even if a number of us don't.
I suppose his value and Rix's value can be compared, but at least Rix stays fit. Not much use having Gardi on the list if he's rarely fit enough to play at senior level.

Have to agree. We need an injury prone ruckman who has played 20 games in 5 years like we need the plague but lets hope they know what they are doing.JeffDunne wrote:Seems like madness to me.
Is the timing of the announcement an indication that we were in the market for another ruckman but couldn't land one?
we didn't land a ruckman in the trade priod so it was either rix or gardiner. Gardiner showed more near the ned of the season and rix doesn't look like playing AFL again.
Congrats to eddy btw

Why do we need either. Havent we got Kosi, McEvoy and Blake as backups for the most overated position on the ground.Solar wrote:we didn't land a ruckman in the trade priod so it was either rix or gardiner. Gardiner showed more near the ned of the season and rix doesn't look like playing AFL again.
