MASSIVE cull ahead for the saints
Ross Lyon was quoted today saying we plan to have 6 picks at the national draft.
You don't have to be Einstein to work out that if we want to do this, whilst taking into consideration we've recruited Ray, still have interest in Cousins
and that at least two of Eddy, Attard and McQualter are likely to be promoted, that we need to clear out alot of the list.
Thus this must be a signal that the following are GONE
Gehrig
Harvey
Rix
Ferguson
Birss
Fiora
Who else?

I think we must all be misinterpreting Lyon's remarks. I don't read what he said as meaning that we are certain to use six draft picks, simply that we were never going to trade them all away.
I can't believe that the club would seriously think it is going to use all of picks (if I've got them right) 13, 47, 48, 63, 79 and 95. I know it is said to be a better draft than those of the last few years, but it would have to be even better than the super drafts of 2000-02 to allow us to get good value with all of those pretty uninspiring picks.
I'm not sure that the draft has ever gone much past pick 90: it certainly hasn't during the 21st century. And it didn't even go as far as pick 79 in 4 of the past 5 years.
Looking more closely at the past 5 years, it seems to me that drafting players after about pick 70 - as opposed, say, to picking them up as rookies - is more or less a waste of time. Hardly any players taken with those late picks have made any impact at AFL level, and most of those who have were recycled players who could have come through the PSD. (For the record, the only players I could find who had played much AFL who have been recruited since 2002 with pick 70 or above are Shane Tuck, Daniel Pratt, David Rodan, Aaron Edwards, Kepler Bradley - all recycled - and Chris Bryan - who was subsequently delisted by Carlton but then picked up by the Pies - and Justin Westhoff - who managed in 2008 to nail a permanent spot in the first 22 at one of the bottom clubs).
Moreover, if we were to use all 6 draft picks, plus Ray, plus Eddy being elevated and even plus perhaps McQualter and Attard being elevated (which must be reasonably likely) plus Cousins, we are looking at 11 players being delisted from our current list. If we have truly re-signed MG, then I would see the hit list as being in the following order:
Harvey (retired)
Gehrig (retired)
Ferguson
Leigh Fisher
C Gardiner
Birss
Baker (I wouldn't have thought so, but the club seems to have gone silent in relation to him, which is perhaps not a great sign)
and then you have already reached another group of players who possibly deserve to be delisted but are still on contract
Fiora
Rix
Howard (just re-signed for two years, but could he realistically ever get a game ahead of the likes of Ray and Steven?)
MG (allegedly just re-signed)
and/or players who were regular selections for the latter part of the season and the finals
Gwilt (and he might have had some trade value?)
McQualter (not elevated)
Jones (or has he got another year on his contract?)
Dempster (surely not)
Schneider (surely not)
Would it be worth delisting any of these guys (or even Leigh Fisher, Fiora or Rix) in order to be able to use picks 79 and 95?
or then to another group of players who we surely aren't even considering delisting and, if we did, one would have thought could have been traded for something better than pick 79
Goose
X
Raph
Kosi
Dal
Joey
Armo
Allen
Gilbert
Gram
And the world will have gone mad if we were to delist any of Max (unless he retires, but I thought it was now confirmed that he was staying), Sam Fisher, Riewoldt, Lenny, Milne, Ball or BJ. And aren't we compelled to hang on to McEvoy, Steven and Connor?
Have I missed something here?

So are you suggesting that Maguire and X were offered in the trade week and no club thought they were worthy of a trade??Legendary wrote:Certain to go (all out of contract and little value moving forward):
Rix
L. Fisher
Ferguson
C. Gardiner
The remaining de-listings will come from the following players:
Fiora, Birss (hope not), Maguire, X. Clarke, Gwilt
Don't wait for the light at the end of the tunnel to appear, run down there and light the bloody thing yourself!

If we are going to delist X and Goose and, presumably, let another club pick them up through the PSD, then any offer at all during trade would have been the "right price", wouldn't it?Legendary wrote:I believe that X and Maguire were both up for trade if the right price had been floated ... obviously it wasn't, but they are seen as somewhat expendable IMO

not sure about rix, but goose is contracted for next season meaning he cant go into the PSD unless he nominates himself and desperately wants out- which i doubt he would do.meher baba wrote:If we are going to delist X and Goose and, presumably, let another club pick them up through the PSD, then any offer at all during trade would have been the "right price", wouldn't it?Legendary wrote:I believe that X and Maguire were both up for trade if the right price had been floated ... obviously it wasn't, but they are seen as somewhat expendable IMO

Will give this a go.
They say this draft the talent runs deep. We've got picks 13, 47, 48, 63, 79 and 95. I don't think that it's so deep that it'll run to pick 95 so I suspect that we'll take 5 players unless we get Cousins too. In that case we'll get 4. Given that that's a long shot, I won't count cousins so therefore we need 5 spots on the list.
We know that Gehrig and Harvey are out
We know that Ray and Eddy are onto the senior list
So that = 0 new spots on the list.
one would suspect that the re-signing of M. Gardiner signals the end for Rix. Rix will be replaced on the list by a new up and coming ruckman. I suspect that Van'Rheehan (spelling) is most like to be cut.
1 new spot on the list
Attard will most likely be promoted onto the senior list... if they weren't going to keep him, well there would be no sense in reatining him on the senior list.
I guess the question mark is did Dempster take his spot??? It's all academic I guess as he's out next season anyway.
0 spots on the list
So out goes
- Ferguson
- Fiora (I think Ray's arrival signals the end for him)
Thats 3 spots on the list opened up
That means we need to open up 2 more spots on the list
The candidates are
L. Fisher
Birss
Armitage
Gwilt
X
Baker
Maguire
C. Gardiner
Eljay
Jones
Blake
Of that list I'd get rid of Jones who we all know is not good enough despite his endeavour, and Eljay simply looks too far away to consider... (I'd try to pick him up as a rookie)
I have a sneaky suspicion based on nothing but gut that they figure that Baker is passed it and that one Birss or L.Fisher is not needed
that gives us 5 spots
