Good on you kitk. Best post I have read this week and I heartily agree with every word, especially the bolded bits.kickittokosi!!!! wrote:posted this in the other X clarke thread, though may as well repeat it here...
Whilst i understand that footy is a tough business, and you cant afford to keep players who just can't cut it, I would be quite disappointed if Xavier was trading.
I understand that he's had constant injuries, X has so many positives...
Xavier has shown very good disposal skills (unlike some), great pace, and despite his frail body, a tenacity at the ball which is exciting to watch and i believe, lifts his teammates.
Why trade a young-ish fast, talented midfielder, when we we're being critcised for lacking midfield pace and depth?
Plus, whilst i know winning football games comes first, but Xavier is also a leading contributor withthe Saints Community Programs aswell as his own Aboriginal Youth Guidance (i think?) initiative.
What a fantastic role model for younger football players.
I know it's a tough business, but i hope he stays.
"Strength through loyalty"...
... does that apply with supporters and players? obvious not here.
He's been a Saint for 6-ish years now.
Don't be so quick to sell him out for some number in a draft FFS.
Hird... The unflushable one is now... just a turd...

Agreed, but don't forget that most of the colour and movement on this forum this week has come from a relatively small group of (I suspect) teenagers and Gen Y types.Richter wrote:Good on you kitk. Thesr guys are living in a bit of an online fantasy football dream world in which the names of players do not represent sweating, breathing people but are simply abstract symbols on a screen to be manipulated and swapped around as part of the "game".
I don't think that these fellas mean any actual disrespect to the players. You shouldn't take what they say too seriously.
If any Gen Y type reading this post think that I'm being a bit condescending towards them, please don't. My main attitude towards Gen Y is that of pure envy.
(I should clarify that. I feel envy towards the boys. Towards the girls - leaving aside those who have lots of piercings - what I generally feel is an urgent need to....... EDITED BY MODS)

I'm sure if they all thought about it for just a second, that they would realise that this is just not going to happen.johnpeterbudgefanclub wrote:Hahahaha this is way too funny.

Or, more specifically, Patrick Veszpremi and Bradley Ebert (2007), Andrejs Everitt and Jack Riewoldt (2006: a nice sense of Saints family in that pairing), Shaun Higgins and Shannon Hurn (2005), Adam Thomson and Matthew Bate (2004), Beau Waters and Brent Stanton (2003), Jason Winderlich and Byron Schammer (2002), Richard Cole and Saintsational's favourite son NDS (2001) and Trent Sporn and Ashley McGrath (2000), Darren Glass and Robert Murphy (1999), Lenny Hayes and Chris Lamb (1998), Jason Saddington and Callum Chambers (1997), Brent Grgic and Tom Gilligan (1996) and I can't be bothered going further back that this.rodgerfox wrote:mick13 wrote:Pick 11 and 13 would get us two very decent players.
Swift, Robinson, Tregove, Yarren, McKernan, Blease, Roughead.
Take your pick of 2!
Blease an Tregove!
Or Brooks, X Clarke, Luke Livingston etc. etc.
A rather so-so list, I'm sure you'll agree. All but a few have managed to play 50 AFL games (or look likely to do so). Not many huge stars: Hayes, Glass, Murphy and Dal Santo (and, IMO, potentially Jack Riewoldt) are probably the closest to this status.
Not too many premiership winners. I can count only three: McGrath, Glass and Waters. Of these, only Glass played a critical role in his team's rise to premiership status. McGrath was simply slotted into a dream team that had already won two GFs and Waters has done relatively little before or since (apart from eating Hunter's goldfish).
It's not exactly a list to get the heart pumping. If we are going to trade for a draft pick, I'd rather go for one of the top 5 or so.

i think he meant a dud at a high pick
those 3 players were not pick 11 and or 13
X was number 5
Livingstone was number 4
Brooks, well we traded pick 6 but i think he was pick 12

I amazed some of you actually leave the house each day. I mean you can't take the risk to cross the road or a bus might clean you up. Heaven forbid getting in a car... we all know where that might lead.
Fair dinkum, I cannot believe some here are arguing against having two 1st round picks.
There are no guarantees in the AFL draft or life in general. You cannot expect any success without taking a risk or three.
Some of you nuffties would have been dead against trading pick 26 for Schneider & Dempster last year and I'm sure there was outrage when Barry Hall was sent pack for pick 13!
St Kilda needs to be a bit more daring if we are ever going to win a flag. Sacrificing X (who is currently borderline in our best 22) for a 1st round pick is not an outlandish risk to take.
BTW I'm with JPB on this... an absolute rubbish rumour.

Look at my list of pick 11s again: Veszpremi, A Everitt, Higgins, A Thomson, Waters, Winderlich, Cole, Sporn, Glass, Hayes, Saddington, Grgic. Any reasonable assessment would have X (on his 2007 form at least) well and truly in the upper half (and probably upper third) of that list.Animal Enclosure wrote:I amazed some of you actually leave the house each day. So, if we traded X for pick 11, I agree with you that it wouldn't be an "outlandish risk". but I would also suggest that it wouldn't be an outstanding percentage play: past experience shows that the average pick 11 is likely to be a bit worse than X. If we threw Gwilt and, worse still, a lower round pick into the mix as well, I reckon that - on percentages - we'd come out a long way behind.

No guarantees of course Meher but this year's draft is a very very good one. Pick 10-20 will get you what in previous years would have been of 5-10 quality.meher baba wrote:Look at my list of pick 11s again: Veszpremi, A Everitt, Higgins, A Thomson, Waters, Winderlich, Cole, Sporn, Glass, Hayes, Saddington, Grgic. Don't get me wrong, I'd love X to fulfill his potential but there comes a time when you have to cut your losses & throw your resources into something else.
I'm in the rejuvenate with youth camp so I'm a bit biased towards getting some exciting young kids in.

If this draft is so good why would CollingFilth consider trading away pick 11 for X (at best another hbf/hff of which they have plenty) and Gwilt?
Surely their recruiting people are telling them similar things that our recruiting people are telling us.
What's the attraction to ColingFilth with X?
I'm sorry, but IMHO this whole notion is just complete bs.
