Bring back the trivia !

When we think of Grand Finals we naturally think of the MCG.
But it wasn't always so.

When was the first Grand Final played at the "G" ?
And prior to that, how many other venues had hosted the VFL GF ?

There was no GF in 1897.

But where were the GF's of 1898, 99, 00 and 01 played?
Hint - 3 different grounds.

My question related to the GF's PRIOR to the first "G" GF.

So as per your reference

1897 No Grand Final
1898 Junction Oval
1899 Junction Oval
1900 East Melbourne
1901 Albert Park (in my reference) which is also referred to as Lakeside Oval or Lake Oval or I knew it as South Melbourne

Though it is worth making the point that those games were only Grand Finals in retrospect, as minor premiers (what would now be the Dr McLelland H&A trophy winners) had the right to challenge the "Premier" if they lost or if they didn't make the GF (eg Essendon unsuccessfully in 1898, and Fitzroy successfully in 1900).

But you are correct that the only other times the GF was not played at the G was when it was taken over by the army during WW2 (1942 Princes Park, 43 PP,44 Junction Oval, 45 PP) and of course the Waverley match during renovations in 91.

So in 112 seasons there have been 111 GF's (or 113 if you count the two draws), but only 9 have been played outside the G, at 5 different venues.

Because Gary Ablett Jr.'s great great grandfather cried when he realised the Boer War Medal had not been awarded to him.

It was seen as being very un-Australian, yet bloody hilarious, and at the same time the VFL tried to dissuade the Cats from fostering future similar behavioural patterns.

Alas, no such luck.

Still bloody hilarious though.

OK
Answer is that apparently in those days there was a custom of allowing away club members in for free.
(Could you imagine us letting Collingwood members in for nothing at our home game !!!!!!!).

But in R5 1900 South Melb charged Geelong female members an entrance fee to get in.
Geelong were furious (losing the game by 14 points would not have helped).
They demanded an apology and an assurance that it would not happen again.
Neither was forthcoming.
So in the return match in Round 12 Geelong got their revenge.
Not only did they run out easy winners 70 to 24, but they made ALL the South members, male and female, pay to get in.

South then demanded a refund.
The VFL imposed a fine on Geelong.
Geelong refused to pay the fine.
So the VFL then threatened to ban Geelong from competing in the Sectional play-offs.

(They had a weird system then where after 14 rounds the competition broke into two sections.
The odd teams and the even teams competed in a separate round robin competition of three games each to determine the best team in each Section based on wins/percentage.
Then the two sectional winners play off in a final.
But if the winner isn't the team that was on top of the ladder at the end of the H&A comp ie Round 14, then they had the right of challenge.
E.g. in 1900 Fitzroy was top at R14, but Essendon beat Fitzroy in the "odds" round robin games. Melb won the "evens" round robin and then beat Essendon in the final.
So then Fitzroy had the right to challenge but lost to Melb by 4 points in the GF.
I hope that made sense ?

Anyway after a series of crisis meetings over three weeks a compromise was reached on the eve of the first sectional games.
Geelong got to play.
And South had to promise to not charge visiting members in future.

(I would love to know when that policy stopped).
