Good idea. Needs to experience other clubs if he wants to be involved in the footy coaching arena.

bethb..its not a case of the Club "letting him go"..he's a retired player he can do as he chooses...much as we'd love to keep him its pretty common knowledge that breaking the links to the Club youve spent your playing days at is the best way to learn the coaching caper

Much as it would be (as it was with Spud at the Pies) hard to imagine him plotting our downfall on match day its not exactly a first, and I'm sure the door will be permanantly left open and the welcome mat dusted and ready shold he choose to return

He doesn't need the coin, he just bought a house in Mount Eliza (Near Frankston/Seaford), just entertaining the options, can't see him at another club.

I think if we don't let him go to another club, we will regret it. It's fantastic for Harves to live and breathe St Kilda, but you have to see it would be beneficial for him to freshen his idea's and broaded his experience?

I'd think Harves would have a wealth of experience, hes played under how many different head coaches at St Kilda? Not to mention the revolving door of other coaching and football staff.

I agree with him getting experience at another club, but Carlton, that is a dagger through the heart.

Collingwood doesn't upset me, but choosing that morally bereft, cheating arrogant tossbags club does.

At the risk of being drawn and quartered for blasphemy...

I recall Harvey's captaincy being criticised on the basis that he was non-communicative - more a 'let on-field actions speak' kind of leader... If that's the kind of bloke he is, I don't expect he'd be the best candidate as a coach. At this stage, we don't need coaches who are learning on the job. We need experienced people with a plan, particularly when it comes to getting the best out of our midfield.

John Worsfold went to Carlton before coming back to West Coast...
Dean Laidley went to Collingwood before coming back to North...

The bloke has been in the same environment for 21 years - he clearly loves the industry and the club, but fair dinkum, a change of scenery is not the worst idea.

I don't ever really see him as a senior coach, but I sure see him as somebody who can play a big role in the future of our club.

If he gets a window into what others are doing, fantastic - we'll be better for it in the long run.

I understand that you want to see Harves in some capacity at the Saints, but the experience you mention is not the same as if he was to broaden his experience at another club.

Great to see him get experience at either Carlton or Collingwood . He's had over 20 years here and seem some very ordinary coaches come and go .
Learning how other clubs do things can only make him a better coach for us in the long term.
Both those clubs have a vastly better finals history than we have !

Personally i hope he does leave and blossoms into a great coach so he can then home back and coach the saints to a premiership.

That way the hope we have been grasping onto all year of seeing him holding the premiership cup aloft in saints colours remains alive!

Didn't do Paul Roos any harm going from playing to assistant to senior coach at the same club. Sure he played at Fitzroy also, but after 21 years I'm sure Harv's has seen more than his fair share of coaches and their different styles.
