there is no such thing as a damaging ruck devision.

There are damaging midfielders, damaging forwards and damaging defenders but ruckmen are useless.

All u ask for them is a contest. Sometimes a tap comes off more often than not the ball is won by the more ferocious midfield. Unless a ruckmen is going to be Dean Cox then i don't see the point in drafting them.

No one even knew how good Cox would be until his mid 20's.

Look at Sandilands. 5 million hitouts and 5 wins or so to show for it.
Lade and Brogan. Bugger all wins to show for there dominance.
Cox and Seaby. Again no wins

How about we go through the top 4 teams.
Only Ottens is what i would consider a good ruckmen as his impact around the ground is good. So one team in the top 4 had a truely good ruckmen.

Then we go outside that.
Sydney - no decent ruckmen
Collingwood - terrible ruckmen
Kangaroos - Drew Petrie is just tall enough to be a key position player
Adelaide - No ruckmen

Would u like me to keep going.

Ruckmen who don't pull there weight aroud the ground are absolutely useless.

By the way Kosi is a much better Ruckmen/Follower than he is as a forward. I have only seen himplay maybe 3 good games as a permenent forward

Is Dean Cox useless or Aaron Sandilands?

Dean Cox is the exception to the rule. But did anyone no how good he was going to be. Could u remind me what pick he went in the draft?

No thats right he was a more mature rookie selection.

And Sandilands is useless

As i said above. 5 million hitouts for 5 wins. thats a great return.

And how good is Sandi around the ground. He couldn't catch a cold let alone take a contested mark.

Just filling up space on the ground and alot of it.

Pound for Pound the softest player in the afl

Would love to have the money that GT has.

Although i probably wouldn't have robbed the club when i left.

Look just go through the list of finalist and find me a really good ruckmen apart from Ottens.

And look how long it took him to get there

i think goddard ff, with raph replacing him in the midfield.

allen kicked just 23 goals for casey this season and i'd like to see a few bags at a lesser level before we plonk him into a key position.

you need an accomplished player at ff.

We need speedy mids. Not sure why 2 years in a row we go down the same path. I am guessing the Saints don't see a big future for McEvoy. We have got to stop getting long term project players. IE Barry Brooks. We need speed and run. Maybe we offload some players for draft picks.

Tony Lockett kicks 10 goals

Well picked up Suss!

Cordy was predicted to be a top 5 pick before he was hurt. The boys has huge talent & the Dogs will get a steal when they take him at #14.

I think this is more the case of the Saints making another team use their father/son selection the way that the new law intended. It's a pity that this law wasn't in 2 years ago & Geelong were forced to use their 1st pick on Tom Hawkins. Instead they picked him up 3rd round & used the 1st rounder on.... Joel Selwood.

It's a much fairer system now.

Back on your post Suss, on the miniscule chance that the Bulldogs don't take Cordy then Kosi becomes a real chance to go for another 1st round pick that can be used on a mid.

he might have, true. that's the frustrating thing about not having a true reserves competition.

if we've got him in mind for ff, he should be played in that position at casey.

i'm not writing him off. he's promising, but i'd like to see more in the way of goals.

Barry Brooks would have been a star if it hadn't have copped all the abuse from the experts on Saintsational. It really affected him mentally!

good move

he was touted as a top 5 pick, is athletic and young. Worse situation is the dogs get him for pick 14. Best situation is we get a really highly rated 200+ cm ruckman to work in tandum with mcenvoy. This would open up the option of trading kosi for ray + pick 14. Make it happen saints

meher baba wrote:As I have said on other threads, the Lyon game plan - like that of the Swans - revolves around launching attacks from winning clearances at stoppages or otherwise from run out of the backline. Either way, the aim is to get the ball out to outside receivers who have worked their way clear of their markers.

Either way, there isn't much room for "elite midfielders" in this setup: the Swans certainly haven't had any for a fair while (Williams I guess was the closest in recent times). Lyon has clearly shown a bias towards hard working and lockdown midfielders: look at the rise and rise of Jones, Eddy and McQualter: the only other leading club at which these three would ever have Buckley's of getting a senior game would be the Swans. Lyon has also struggled to work out how to fit Dal and Joey into this game plan, and has only recently started to appreciate that BJ is better value as a mid rather than as an attacking back.

Having a ruckman who can dominate the hitouts is also critical to this game plan. Assuming that Gardi is moving on, we only really have one such at the club in King. Correct me if I'm wrong, but McEvoy to me looks to be more of the Kosi type of versatile tall who can also ruck. So another genuine ruckman is worth pursuing in the draft IMO.

BTW, while I have been highly critical of Lyon's game plan in the past, I am increasingly of the view that - in "modern footy" it is especially important to have creative players behind the ball who can win the ball, make evasive runs and deliver the ball to players in the clear or into space to running contests (but never, ever to marking contests in the back half).

Lyon seems to be onto this in a big way and - after experimenting with Gram, Sam F, BJ, Dal and Dempster in this role, just might (fingers crossed) have found the solution in Raph: who, for mine, seems to get the "quarterback" role.

Anyway, I've rambled off topic, but my point is that it would be sensible to keep looking at young ruckmen in the draft. But we should be going after Cousins and another forward as well (but preferably not ROK, unless he is dirt cheap).
Whilst the argument may suit your obsession about the Swans game plan... logic tells me that this isn't the case.

A raw ruckman will take a few years to develop, by which RL may be long gone. If you view had substance then he would be recruiting ready made ruckmen.

If you look at the history, you are more likely to draft mids than ruckmen, so like KPP's, you geth them while you can. IMO.

To suggest that RL does not want quality mids is folly IMO.

I recall not too long ago that people were criticising that the club didn't recruit Hale(?).

Maybe RL is building ofr the future? Maybe he has McEvoy earmarked for a fwd spot?

Oh no! Sack the draft watchers.......

We might get a top 5 pick for pick 13. What poor sense that is...... not.

Look at the Brions, despite losing a number of gun mids over the last 4 years, they picked up Cameron Wood at 18 in the 2004 draft. Then picked up Leuenberger at 4 in the 2006 draft. Two ruckmen with their first picks within the space of 3 years. A waste?

NO! In 2007 they traded Wood to Collingwood....... for pick 14 (an improvement of 4 spots in a supposedly gun draft!) which they they used to pick up Travis Johnstone.

The important thing is not what type of player you pick up in the draft but whether or not who you pick up turns out to be a gun or not.

Having said that, I do favour going for potential gun mids over potential gun ruckmen as a general rule, but if the odds are stacked heavily in your favour as they may be here.... well ok, go for it.

So if the dogs nominate him for Father-son does that mean we can't draft him before the dogs?

So who rucks next year? Who plays forward? McEvoy can't win a hitout in the VFL let alone AFL. Allen is still just an average VFL forward and did nothing in his senior games. Cordy would be four years away.
