Sports Tonight - Are we interested in O'Keefe?

"lets get cousins"
"i want cousins"
thats what i keep hearing,
now i know, we dont give anything up to get cousins,
but its in the same boat.
we could use that pick, to pick up a younger talent.
he has missed 18 months? is it?
out of footy
and is 30 something?
o'keefe is 28, no injuries, solid player and a medium foward,
most of you have been crying for all season,
why shoot the idea out of the sky before it gets anywhere?
we may as well make a move, and try
if he wants out the swans will want to get something for him,
if they refuse on everything, he will go preseason and they will get nothing.

L. Fisher + 3rd Round to Sydney for O' Keefe (maybe they'll take Fiora and/or C. Gardiner aswell )

North, a side that's always competitive but will never make the final two..
Laidley was fighting for his position and gathered players like Nathan Thompson and Jonathan Hay and gave up top draft picks ...
Do we want Lyon to do the same???
F*** recycled players unless it costs us little, which has been done in the past under Lyon....
Look at the top two clubs (Hawks and Cats) and look at what they have done...
No trade for anyone over 28 as a band aid and look to the future...
The coach has to have strength in his style and believes IMO..
Not like Laidley, who will continue with his style of grabbing players to maintain position but not getting any further...
a sign of weakness IMO and I hope Lyon does not go down that path...
Don't wait for the light at the end of the tunnel to appear, run down there and light the bloody thing yourself!

i would not do this trades personally.
kosi straight swap as the need forwards and ruckam because spida has retired. if they do not want a straight swap then kosi and 4th round or 3 rd the earliest.

Seriousl though, here's how I see it... rightly or wrongly.
We have an opportunity to get a flag with our main core in the next few years.
If we can top up (at the right price) with established players, then we should look at it.
Likewise, we should keep one eye on the future. And draft good kids with our first few rounds.
There's been quite a few "kids" that have amounted to nothing.
It's not a question of do we follow hawks, or do we follow LAidley.
It's about where we are at, and if we believe we have enough talent for a tilt. therest flows from there.
BTW, the trade idea was tongue-in-cheek somewhat. Just making sure that people actually read my posts. It stems from my childhood when my dad used to take out to Pt Philip bay and make me swim back to Elwood beach.

Go for it now, keep the first pick, and bring in some quality for positions we lack in....

Lyon has done very well with the aged recruits of last year and three of the four were start up top 22.
I expect his formula is that you go for the best that are available, regardless.
In other words two years of a brownlow medallist contain more upside & is certainly less of a risk than the unknown of a 18 year old at picks 30+
As far as ROK is concerned he would be an asset the club would love to get. To discount him because he because is 28 would be foolish.
We have plenty of picks to get kids, and it should be a balance of filling roles with ready mades & kids for future development.

Yep, I agree! Too old! Give him a VERY wide berth! Look for some younger talent, this will prove more beneficial to us in the long run.stinger wrote:thomas had a policy and a damned good one......no one over 24 ..and who is not capable of playing 100 games for the saints......say no to o'keefe ffs....
Age has got nothing to do with it.
What will he cost?
Can he deliver?
They are the questions.
Was harvey too old this year?
Was Crawford too old to win a premiership medal?
We wont give up our first or second round dps (or so the club reckons).
So if thats the case mabye a third round dp and a Fiora/Fisher/Ferguson skilled player.

If we want to get a reasonble good player we are not going to get them giving the other club players we are going to probably delist. To draft a good player you give a good pick or a good player. Throwing in untradable players doesnt make the deal go through so if wanted O'Keefe we would have to give second at least or a player like Kosi and they may give us a second rounder. Giving them Gwilt or Ferg or the like isnt going to do anything even if it was with a low pick.
These are the decisions people at our club get paid big money to make.

He's exactly what we need - a medium sized forward who can take a mark and be the lead up target when Riewoldt plays closer to goal. He can also drift into the midfield.
And we'd also have the two players who destroyed us in that Prelim three years ago.
But the question is what he would cost us. I think trading Kosi would be too steep a price, because the ideal situation would be to have all three. If we did trade Kosi to get ROK, then Ben McEvoy would probably have to start really developing quickly.
Archie Fraser has already stated pick 13 & 31 will not be traded, which is silly only because it restricts what we can give up for O'Keefe. They were keen in Leigh Fisher last year, but that was 12 months ago. They could probably get him for nothing now.
Fraser has also said we will probably want to use six draft picks. I'm not sure if he is just talking about the National Draft, but if he is, that leaves even less wiggle room to get ROK.
And all the noise today is about Carlton, Collingwood and Hawthorn. Could be the Judd trade all over again.

Well, yes, Carlton would be a good fit..... Collingwood maybe too given Rocca is virtually gawn..
But with Warnock probably off to Carlton, they'd be unlikely to throw more at another trade.
OTOH, there's probably enough interest so that we may have to give up a 2nd rounder..... is that worth it?
2006 - 2nd rounder - Brad Howard
2005 - 1st rounder - Fergus Watts
2004 - 1st rounder - Andrew McQualter, 2nd round - Cain Ackland
Let's be honest - O'keefe would likely be much better value than anyone we've picked up in the draft since Raph and Sam Fisher in 2003.

Agree, but surely the Swans would also look at what holes they want tto fill? What if they wanted a wingman or flanker? Maybe 2 mid range players might appeal tothem?plugger66 wrote:If we want to get a reasonble good player we are not going to get them giving the other club players we are going to probably delist. Yes this is the club's time to make the decisions required to win us a premiership.
Are we close enough with the list we have, or are we a few years away, tough analysis and decisions needed.
ROK may be 28 years old (next year) but he is a quality player, and the type of player that we desperately need if we think we are going to have a crack at a premiership in the next 3 years.
We have got tall marking forwards in Roo and Kosi, smaller guys like Schnieder and Milne. What we have been missing since Aaron Hamill left is a medium sized half forward type to get the ball into these guys. We have tried C Gardiner, Gwilt, Ferguson and even Raph at various stages of the year with little success. We should do everything possible to get O'Keefe
Now if you didnt like the above please do not read on as you surely wont like what I have to say next.....
Talk of getting him for a second round pick and Leigh Fisher is ridiculous. O'Keefe is worth a first round draft pick, and unless we pay as much we simply wont get him. He played in the Victorian team last year, made this years All Australian shortlist of 40 players and came second in the swans B&F. Whereas draft picks (especially outside of the top 10) are purely speculative. Those who think a first round pick is too high a price consider what we would expect for Lenny Hayes who is also 28.
The hard decisions need to be made people. Just remember Geelong was widely panned a few years ago for giving up 2 first rounders for Brad Ottens. 2 years later Ottens IMO almost singlehandedly pulled them through the last quarter in a prelim against collingwood. Do Geelong care who Richmond drafted with those picks? Nope they were two busy polishing their premiership cup.

Big call, but it does make sense.
I reckon that even top 10 picks are also a gamble... al be it a smaller one. Bettham comes to mind, and I'm sure there were many others.
Also, most are calling to "stock up" coz of GC17.
To be honest, you can only play a certain number of young players at one time.
The trick to getting ROK will probably be to trade a name player for a first rounder and then on trade the pick for him.
That way, you get the best of both worlds.
