Gwilt has to do a defensive forward job on Hodge. He has the height and the strength. Thankfully Hodge isnt super quick, so Jimmy should be able to limit the space allowed to Hodge.
He is the Hawks most important player. Forget Buddy, forget Roughy, Luke Hodge is the general, the soul and the inspiration for that footy club.
Keep him quiet and you go a long, long way to winning the game.

Don't think a straight tag will work, Whoever it is we will need to make Hodge man up by going through his opponent where possible, denying Hodge the chance to run loose and be creative.. almost every hawks rebound forward thrust is through hodge.
And the president said " I did not have sex with that woman"
And our former president said " Football is like golf"
Go Sainters !!!!!

Thats what Birss did to Heath Shaw early on in the year.supersaints wrote:Don't think a straight tag will work, Whoever it is we will need to make Hodge man up by going through his opponent where possible, denying Hodge the chance to run loose and be creative.. almost every hawks rebound forward thrust is through hodge.
He ended up stopping his influence on the game and kicked 2 goals himself.

Hodge is the key to this week
We know buddy and roughhead will get some goals, we can try and minimise them , but it is the feed to them that counts
therefore we must must stop the hodge quarter back role, to me Hodge is the difference b/w the Hawks getting say 13 goals and if we don't stop him 20 goals.
Doubt that Birrs or CJ are strong enough, Gwilt is the one for mine

Firstly the decision needs to be made...do you just try and stop Hodge...or do you try and exploit that he plays wide of is man?
Hodge no doubt will try and be in front of Roo to cut off his supply and then rebound....
OPTION HARVEY
Now against the Pies Harvey was put on Thomas...amd Banger set up our first 3 goals due to Thomas's looseness.
So Banger is one option as he is SMART and knows when and where to find space. Players need to be instructed to kick to him when he is wide of Hodge to punish Hodge's looseness.
OPTION JONES
The other way to go is complete defence...put Jones on him with instructions to stay with him. Jone's pace will allow this.
OPTION GWILT
Does not have Harvey's ability to read the play..or have his great Judgement. Biut can be instructed to bea go to Target. Hodge is very clever though......though could come unstuck. Saints players would need to be disciplined to pass to Gwilt and not Roo. One upside with Gwilt is that he is a beautiful long kick.
OPTION BIRSS
Bring in Birrs to play on Hidge. Birss has demonstrated a number of times this year (ie Heath Shaw) that he can play very well on the go-to defenders like Hodge...while also remaining dangerous asa forward. Birss isa very nice mark for his size, read the play well and is a good shot on goal. He has the smarts to know when to play close to Hodge...and when to sneak away to presenta marking target.
BJ
We need BJ in our midfield, or backfield.
To penetrate the Hawks rolling midfield you need pin point kicking or run.
So BJ and Gramin the midfield are both vital plaers for us against the Hawks.
BJ kicking into the forward line with an accurate kick that Hodge cannot cut off is avital way of keeping Hodge out of the game.

Flying the World in comfort thanks to FF Points....
If Gwilt is the player to do the job, not only does he have to stick tight on Hodge when playing defensively, but he must endevour to hurt him the other way....
We know Jimmy has a brilliant left foot on him, and anywhere from 55m is a possible goal, so we should try to use him on the rebound and make Hodge stick close to him instead of constantly zoning off... If Hodge does this, Jimmy will be free alot and this must be exploited...
Alternatively, Eddy is a good size, and definetely has the run to shadow Hodge everywhere.. Only issue with Ed is he isnt much of a show to hurt Hodge the other way....
Looks like Gwilt is the man this week... Ignore him at your own peril Podge..

Hodge is a very different option to H Shaw for everyone advocating Birss.
For the record, I like Birssy, dont think he shoudl have been dropped in the first place, and I think he brings alot to the team.
HOWEVER - I wouldnt play him on Hodge, even if he was in th side. Hodge is alot harder and tougher than Shaw, he has better skills and is stronger. Is a much, much better mark and will exploit Birss.
Gwilt has to be used as a defensive forward. He has the height and strength to go with Hodge, and MUST be used as part of our forward forays. Could even be used as a long kick-out target if he pushes down the ground abit.

Hodge fills the gap infront of Roo, then plays loose when the ball spills. H eis the go to man from defence to set up their attack.
Either way, he has to be kept accountable. If he peels off to block Roo's leads, then his direct opponent should be our got o guy. Hemce, I guess JG will be the better option.
The shut-down option means that you'd aim to keep hodge away from play as much as possible.
JG would have to decide when to go off him and when to stay with him. Also, if his opponent goeas with him when he plus the hole, then you'll crowd the fwd line.
Hence i lean twoards shutting him down and help keep our fwd 50 open.

The lid is off after Round 2! Enjoy the journey, coz you just don't know where we'll end up. Live for today and seize the moment.

Hodge's opponent needs to be a genuine goal kicker - so that Hodge pays him due respect.
I worry that Gwilt doesn't quite have the smarts to do the job.
Hodge is going to position himself in front of Roo which is kind of where we want a crumber (front and centre). How about Schneider? He has a good long kick and is good defensively.
Anyway, is this all a moot point? Given they'll man up on all our forwards anyway... the last thing we want to do is send someone to him who's already got an opponent attached (and clog up even more space). If he's playing loose, and we send down a defender (and I like BJ) to make him accountable, we need to make sure we target BJ a lot early to reinforce the point, and make sure we keep out of Roo and Kosi's space.
