i just dont like the holding the ball over head with two hands bulls***.....
as soon as u do that the opposition know exactly whats going on AND the umpires blow play on much MUCH quicker as soon as they see u do it...

just be a bit smarter about it, they all know there is F*** all time left (runners passing messages etc) so why tell the whole world what ya doing by holding the ball in the friggin air.

i dont like the chip chip myself, but can see everyones valid points in the thread.

there is nothing wrong with the way they played in the last 5 minutes. I was pretty keen for them to get over the ton, but i can definitely see why they did it. I know it was only for 5 minutes, but you still gotta protect your assets, they being your players and the lead

And lets not forget that a major factor in brisbanes last quarter fade outs this year is because they continue to play aggresive football, "even with a lead they'd keep playing quick footy and you had a chance to get the ball back if you pressured them up,'' I know that there was only 5 minutes left or so, but playing that keepings off football makes sense, especially in todays game when you can never take a win for granted

It constantly amazes me that when teams chip the ball amongst themselves in the last 5 minutes of a game that the opposition get smart and have all players manned-up.

Surely then the team with the ball has to do something with it. If the opposition don't want to man up then it just plays right into the hands of the team with the ball.

Instead of both sets of fans booing the team with the ball, why dont the opposition get stuck into their team for failing to man up?

Or is that thinking too logical?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Footy is no longer played "down the guts" and permanantly man on man. Handball is a legitimate tactic. To those who insist on screaming "kick the bloody thing" all game..sheesh...get back to Moorabbin in the 70s cos it aint gonna happen in 2008.

Really got on my goat that some people are never happy. Here we were, 48 points in front of a Top 4 contender with 5 minutes to go, honouring the great man, and some people still want all-out attacking risk-taking footy and hurl sarcastic abuse if it sint deleivered. They are of course the first to scream if a turnover while doing that costs a goal.

Wake up to yourselves and stop being so damned selfish and locked in the past. . Ever thought the players might have been totally buggered?? Easy to judge from your high vantage point 100m away..not.

Looking forward to the footy education some people will gain next weekend by being down on L1 and seeing things a bit more as the players do. Maybe then the screams of abuse to players who cant see others in space might just lessen a bit.

are you not one of the people who has given me hell over the past year for booing the saints?

Actually - I haven't.

So why don't you get your facts right instead of throwing around immature and more importantly incorrect remarks about another poster.

Like it or lump it, icing the clock and tempo football is an essential part of modern footy. The amount of people who go to footy games that don't have a basic understanding of the tactics of modern footy is kinda scary.

I've noticed the TV guys have stopped whinging so much about the ball held over the head.

Perhaps it's because it's becoming pretty clear that the main thing it means is just that there's not much time left - not "don't kick to a contest". I've noticed for example that when the Roos do it, the next kick is almost always long and to a contest (perhaps they've seen a lot of teams let their guard down to this kick in that situation?).

It really doesn't seem to be a universal signal to play chipilotto.

To be perfectly honest, when you told me you had posted this saints66au I was inspired to join the forum just to add my three cheers/hooray/pip pip/support.

I get pretty tired of hearing people saying every week "I pay good money" and letting everyone know that the boys "owe us" more.

The truth is, we all pay good money because we (voluntarily by the way) believe it is worth it.

If you don't think the boys play well enough to take your money, then please do us all a favour and don't spend it. Don't come.

It's an old favourite to trot out but I'll say it anyway - do the kids around us need to hear adults being such bad sports? And - what do our rivals think of us if even WE don't support our team?

I'm sure we all admit that being a Saint's supporter is frustrating and harrowing and depressing at times. But the next time the boys make a third quarter turn around, or the next time Milny snaps a brilliant goal - I'll be waiting to hear all the constant detractors cheer like they are personally responsible for the wonder that is the Saints.

Thanks saints66au - you inspired me to rant as well!

Whew. I feel better now.

that's bs ................footy has been played for 150 years.....the only time players kicked backwards in the first 140 years was when a player got confused and forgot which way he was kicking...........i played a bit of footy in my time also....never felt the need to kick backwards......would have been dragged if i did........

oh....just for the record.......i would never boo my team ffs........

3 more goals would have been great. Would mean we would have only had to beat Essendon by 8 goals instead of 16 to leapfrog Adelaide into the top 4.

Are you sure we would have kicked 3 more goals and they would have scored nothing?

It was still worth a crack. Could have been 6th vs 7th to decide who gets the home final out of the two of us.

If
could have
might have

lots of imponderables.

I'm more than comfortable to take the win we had.

IF we'd won the WCE game we wouldn't even be discussing this question.

Hindsight is, IMHO, no validation of supporters booing our players when they did.

Hear hear

I would say tho..that I reckon every Top 8 side has dropped an "undroppable" game this year..and a couple of them managed it in Round 22, when it REALLY counted and there are no more rounds left to make up for it

I didn't boo, but I wasn't pleased with the situation. We had the momentum in a huge way, and any goal against Adelaide would have counted two-fold for bridging the percentage gap between us.

Hindsight has nothing to do with it, there was always a big chance it was going to come down to percentage between us and the Crows, whether it be 4th spot, or 6th.

You can debate/argue all you like about the relative merits of 'icing the clock', but this thread was about the supporters booing our players.

It would seem that quite a number of posters, including myself and yourself, did not agree with that booing.
So therefore you raising the issue again in this thread by saying that we should have not used the tactic seemed to be a support of the booing?

True, the booing of our players and/or tactics is a blight on our supporter base. Almost as bad as cheer squad members booing earlier in the year.

Agreed, and I see someone else has started a thread about the 'cost' of our 'chipping' which would seem to be a more appropriate place to discuss/debate the relative merits of that particular tactic.
