This would've been a perfect opportunity for a Lindsay Fox to chip in 20K and charter a plane to fly very low alititude back to Melbourne, so Milney could've been home late today or early tomorrow, which would've given him faster access to medical treatment in Melbourne, and a chance of playing on Sunday perhaps?

Anyway, he's in the car - let's hope those coppers let him get back nice and fast!
Only a lazy 3400k's. I reckon Milney would be like an annoying kid.

Does anyone pity the poor club trainer who has to put up with the yapping for 2 1/2 to 3 days without ear muffs.

Back in the 80's I knew of truckies who would leave Melbourne on Friday Night and arrive in Perth before lunch on Sunday !!

You'll really be missed this week mate. Have a speedy recovery and drive safe.
I really hope it's only a little fracture and he can come up against the dons, he must be gutted enough to be missing the Crows clash, i know i am.
Get well quick buddy. Courageous effort.

I'm tipping that trip would be more like Perth to Los Angeles.

I think it is his old man Brian flown accross to pick him up?

Sore Milne driven home from Perth

THE road to the finals wasn't meant to be like this for Stephen Milne. The St Kilda forward left Perth about lunchtime yesterday for an uncomfortable 3476km road trip to Melbourne to protect his fractured cheekbone.

Accompanied by club doctor Denis Campbell - and not his father as reported - Milne is expected to arrive home late tomorrow night.

Club officials last night were unsure where the pair were bunking down at night, but they were expected to rest in Kalgoorlie and then Adelaide. Flying home was ruled out by doctors.

"There is an element of risk to flying with this type of injury," Saints football manager Matthew Drain said.

The Saints hope Milne will miss just one game - against Adelaide at Telstra Dome on Sunday -- but sports medico Dr Peter Larkins said Milne could be out longer.

"I think that (one week) is optimistic," Larkins said.

He said the worst-case scenario with cheekbone injuries was surgery to realign bones and four to six weeks on the sidelines.

Larkins said flying was impossible because of severe damage to Milne's sinuses.

"Air getting into your veins can cause an embolus in your bloodstream which can kill you," Larkins said.

The Nullarbor odyssey comes after Milne clashed heads with Fremantle's Antoni Grover in the first quarter at Subiaco on Sunday. Milne played out the match and kicked three goals.

"It was a courageous effort by Milney," Drain said.

"He was desperate to play on and after careful consideration by the medical staff he was cleared to play. He had an X-ray after the game which indicated an injury to his cheekbone. He will be assessed later in the week."

Milne's face blew up and his eye closed before the end of the game.

He is renowned as a chatterbox, prompting Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt to joke last night: "I wouldn't like to be stuck in a car with Milney for two days."

That Doctor should be made a life member of the Club, effective the minute he gets home still a sane man ;-)

Not only the players who "take one for the team" :-)

According to a snippet of an interview with Leigh Montagna played on SEN this morning, Milney has a slight fracture in the other cheekbone as well. This injury occurred during the West Coast game.

I hope everyone spares a thought for Milney. It wont be a fun ride home for him. Expect to lose him for more than a week, possibly 4-6 depending on damage and repairs.

The bloke deserves a lot more respect than he often is afforded on this forum.

Not sure who we have to step into the side who can crumb and kick as quickly as Milne can. He will be missed. Goals win matches and he is usually good for at least two.

absolutely. not too many small forwards around who can kick upwards of 50 for the year.

who are the options to replace him as a small goal-kicking crumber if he's out?

x? armitage? geary? steven?

Do you think he might be OK when we make the GF?

I once spent a year in Adelaide, I think it was on a Sunday.

So we now know that he played almost 3/4 of footy with 2 fractured cheekbones. Now that's TOUGH. It also speaks volumes of what the guy is prepared to do for the club and his mates. WELL DONE MILNEY !!
