Post: # 622612Post userbetheknee »

This team couldn't beat Melbourne
It's annoying that Ross Lyon doesn't back up his word by picking teams on form instead he just picks people who have had there chance and let us down time and time again
R. Clarke, Birss, McQualter, Schneider, Gwilt, Ferguson, Jones
At least if were going to lose play some new guys

The younger guys like Armitage, McEvoy, Steven, Allen and Howard all playing well in the 2's and it will at least give them some experience for the coming years.

I'm starting to find it a bit annoying with the obsession of Armitage, he is not up to it this season.

Last time at subiaco he has 6 touches in 93% TOG playing a midfield role.

The only way he's going to get better is by playing him and thats what the obsession with him is. Saints fans want to see people with potential not people over the hill

You obviously have not watch Casey games of late. They are not all playing well in the 2's at all.

Only Armo has in recent times. Howard has shown signs, but not at the level required for AFL.

Alen was good erakly on in the season, but has been ordinary of late. Ditto for Ben.

Armo's last 2 games were both very poor, and he is not up to it at present.

Most of the "new guys" have been givena chance to shine this year and most of them have not.

Geary started the year well...but has faded.
Same for armo.
Ben had the one game and hardly toucheed it.

Same for Allen whose disposal was dreadful.

Eddie has howver been fair of Late.

Jones has stepped up and been a solid player deserving his spot.

Gwilt has been given two sets of goes.....but ahs only lookee ok in one whole game and halfa game against the Pies.

Now I think most of the 'new guys" havea future...but not right here, right now.

Geary needs to build up...and armo has to improve his endurance as he shows class, but simply cannot get enough ball in the seniors.

OVER-Rated.

I seriously wouldn't even rate his performance as 5/10.

The bloke goes near the pill and everyone on here starts going wild. And its easy to impress others, when all of us put the expectation bar so low.

Plus, he is not that fast - especially with the pill.

Think he's done well enough to deserve his spot this year...hard at it, willing, wish we had a few more of him.

Raf & Birss were in line for a call up. Birss has been consistently amongst the best, and Raf was the BOG for us game before last. I dont know about the others though.

In case you haven't noticed...

1- we are still in contention for finals
2- you go into finals with a stable 22 if possible
3- play inexperienced players now = tanking.
4- players you mentioned have hardly performed.
5- we are still in contention for finals
6- There are a fixed number of players on the list. Sadly, we have too many that have let us down.

The lid is off after Round 2! Enjoy the journey, coz you just don't know where we'll end up. Live for today and seize the moment.

I suppose some supporters find it increasingly impossible to be negative about any one of their players, ultimately living in a dream land which seemingly doesn't wins games as well as premierships.

A few more?

It would definitely be a great tackling side......How would they kick goals?

See, it's not that hard to be positive. He is a good tackler, throws himself into packs. Imagine if Dal, Fiora or Gram did the same thing, we'd be hard as! You've gotta admit, his disposal has improved 200% this season, he's even scored a couple goals (didn't he get one last week? Or am I confusing him with Gram?).

3 years in which we debuted S. Fisher, Rix, R. Clarke and Gilbert is where we are being bought undone.

I have no doubt that S. Fisher, R. Clarke and Gilbert are up to it, but Rix is best described as a "battler".

Thru 2007 and 2008 we have given a few more a "go", but you can not expect these players to perform as do those who debuted 2 or 3 years before them - unless they are exceptional and none of them are.

As I have said before, the problems were apparant by mid 2004 when, instead of continuing to build we thought we had "the side" - and we ran it into the ground - from which it has never recovered.

We "burnt" the foundations of St Kilda becoming a consistent contender for a decade - and now we have the pieces to pick up.

And there ina nut-shell you have it.

The Cup glittered too brightly and impatience set in.
We chose to mainly add GOPS for depth, rather than quality for the future.

And that is bighting us on the bum now.

And if we'd drafted for the future at that time we would've burnt any chance of a premiership then - we gambled - it was worth the gamble - bad luck and circumstance went against us.

Should a club forever look to the far future? Look at the premiership teams in the immediate years around their success - little or no influx of youngsters but a solid core of experience - crows, essendon, lions, port, swans, west coast, geelong. By winning the premiership you could argue they've burned their chance 4 years down the track. Fair dinkum!

But if you'd rather never take the gamble and say - this side is a chance - well you'll never win!

No doubt we had some bad luck, because a back line with Penny at Full-back, Hudgden for whoever, short or tall and Maguire at CHB, with Leigh Fisher and Jones plus Voss set us up.

The recruiting never addressed the loss of Penny and the loss of structure in the back half, forcing Max to a key position.

When Aussie was being cut up overhead in the last quarter of his last game, Max should have had the job - but he was required for Hall. That is the difference Penny made in terms of structure and flexibility.

Instead we drafted players who never kicked on at AFL level - and who were they?

We should have been picking the eyes out of the Draft to gain a couple of potential key defenders - because that is where we remain under pressure particularly given the demise of Maguire which has compounded matters leaving Max and Sam Fisher, who is essentially a very good defensive positioning (and therefore marking) and rebounding half back flanker - much as was Voss.

Then we have Gilbert.

Then we have Gwilt.

Then we have R. Clarke.

And, to boot, if you look at the Casey side, there are no St Kilda listed players named at either full-back or CHB.

Therein lies the essence of the criticism of our recruiting policy over a couple of what were very, very important years in terms of list flexibility and required options.

But that is the past - we have some major issues for the future as emphasised by the "tall" defensive options at our disposal and listed above.

The reason these players are found out is that they currently lack either height or body strength or both for the positions we are committed to play them in because there are no other options.

In their correct positions they would be fine players.
