Adelaide at TD 2005

Freo at Aurora 2005 (very lucky win)

Freo at Aurora 2006

The Cats in our first game against them in 2006
I was actually looking for specifics matchups that cost us games.

Some of those games - the Adelaide at TD for one - I'd put down to the players.

That night, Adelaide had just kicked a goal and as the players ambled back to their positions with their heads down, I counted 16 of the 18 on the ground who were heavily bandaged and/or limping.

I think the thing we miss most about Grant Thomas was the ability to get the team up. He was a motivator, while Ross Lyon believes the players are professionals and should motivate themselves, which would work if every other club thought the same way.

However, Grant Thomas' neglect of the rookie list was his greatest sin. Recruiting Sweeney, McGough & Watts was also a mistake, but Ackland was an upgrade on Knobel, finished top 10 B&F in 2005, and was really good until injuring a knee v Collingwood in late 2005. After that he was rat poo.

loser-ish, wanky, looking back at the past

Arguable that GT may have taken us to a flag if we'd had better luck with injuries, but also arguable that our list was so good that he didn't really do much coaching at all and that a trained monkey could have done just as good a job. I'm not an expert on game plans but from what I saw it was a straight attack down the center corridor tactic which was effective the majority of the time, but it wasn't long before other top-four rivals figured out how to beat us and once that happened there was no plan B.

Also arguable that we had some serious flaws in our fitness and condition management which, as coach and experienced football director, should have been cracked down on and addressed early into our 05 campaign, not defended as a continuous bout of bad luck.
With no plan B. GT then changed assistant coaches and got in... sorry forgot his name. he got out of the coaching game..

then not only the injury management bacame a problem that wasn't fixed, but also developing players, having rookies onlists. having a relationship with casey
And all these disastrous flaws that have been brilliantly addressed - are helping us how?
Too many previously injured players carrying too many scars - our fitness management came too late.

If GT was still coaching, we'd

- be bringing our "A" grade game every week
- our "wellness" indicators would be at all time highs
- we'd have 3 new captains
- we'd have seen 6 to 10 assistant coaches come and go
- we'd be following the processes and the outcomes would have taken care of themselves
- we'd occasionally be outcoached
- the umpires would be put in their place
- we'd winning evey game by at least 10 goals
- Harvey would have been "exited" out.
- the players would go to the movies instead of training
- GT would have caught up on his annual leave entitlements becasue the players could coach themselves... allowing him more free time.
-Hamill would still be out for 2 weeks

Or, maybe I'm just farting at thunder. Who knows?

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

The lid is off after Round 2! Enjoy the journey, coz you just don't know where we'll end up. Live for today and seize the moment.

"I was outcoached" or "I didn't tell them to play like that".

Same thing.

Different approach.

Both get command different levels of respect from your playing group too.
Very different things, actually.

One of them takes responsibility, the other lays blame.

The buck stops with the coach, GT has said that before, and since he was sacked.

Ross Lyon blames everyone but himself.

"I didnt tell them to play like that..." Thats not what we're training them to do..." "They couldnt excite themselves for the game..."

What a load of bollocks. Take some responsibility, you muppet.

Except that all of our bad drafting and trades evidently were neatly shifted to JB...or is that somehow not blame shifting?

We'd still be getting beat by Port, but the best thiung that might have come out of GT still being around would've been the delisting/trading of MILNE.
