what's happened to you in 'Harvey time'
http://sportal.com.au/AFL-opinion-displ ... ion!-53948
Robert Harvey - the first man ever to play 21 seasons - has been playing, consider the state of the AFL and the world in general back in 1988 when he made his debut:
*there were just 14 teams in the AFL and Brisbane and West Coast were only in their second year in the competition while Adelaide, Fremantle and Port were all years off joining the competition.
*Fitzroy was still going strong and would be in the AFL for another eight years.
*not only did the Saints play their home games at Moorabbin but grounds such as Victoria Park, Windy Hill, Whitten Oval, Princes Park, Waverley and the WACA were all still in use.
*current AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou was in his last season at Hawthorn.
*St Kilda's captain was Danny Frawley, who during Harvey's time not only captained the club for a record period but coached Richmond for five years and has been out of coaching for four years.
*Ten current St Kilda players were either born that year or had not been born at all.
*Hawthorn superstar Lance 'Buddy' Franklin was just one year old.
*Former Essendon great James Hird was four years off making his AFL debut while former Collingwood skipper Nathan Buckley was five years off his first game.
*Current St Kilda coach Ross Lyon was in his fourth year as a player with Fitzroy
*Wimbledon had just won the English FA Cup.
*Bob Hawke was Prime Minister of Australia.
*George Bush senior was about to be elected President of the United States.
*there were no DVD's, mobile phones or internet.
*And Die Hard was the big screen movie of choice.

Lance or James??
There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>. Over the past three years, I have been subjected to a <redacted>investigation followed by <redacted> witch hunt. The toll this has taken on my family, and my work for <redacted>and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense. (Oops just got a spontaneous errection <unredacted>)

when I think about it in the context of what's happened in my own life since 1988 it's truly mind blowing to think that Harves has been an AFL player for all of that time. When I think about where I was, who I was and what I was doing 20 years ago through until today, I'm just in awe of Harves' effort. A true, humble, ball playing, genuine great of the game. There aren't enough accolades for him. True legend.

When he started I lived in Perth, the last of my three years there. The next year I moved to London and had to wait until Monday morning to pick up TNT outside a tube station to see how we went. To get a few details I had to go down to Australia House to read the papers.
Now I either watch it live here, or listen on the internet. We've all come a long way in 21 years.
Amazing career, really hope we give him a send-off in coming weeks. He deserves everything. What a champ.

Was 21 when he debuted.
Had moved into a share house with brother and mates. (lost some time here in fog of alcohol and other things).
Hair halfway down to backside. No tattoos. Listening to Iron Maiden, AC/DC, etc
Since then have lived in Cheltenham, Noble Park, Dandenong, Portland, Geelong, Werribee, Frankston, Sydney, Mulgrave, Aspendale, Edithvale, Patterson Lakes, Mornington (for the last 8 years).
Got married, had a child, got divorced. Lost license, regained license.
Married again, 2 more kids, ex-wife died and first child came back to live with me and second wife and siblings (5 years ago now).
Still listening to Maiden and AC/DC, but also playing it now, shorter hair, more tatts, travelling a lot more for work (around Oz, NZ and Asia mostly, but headed to USA next month - cheap Fenders woohoo).
Wow - seems incredible when you start listing it all down.
Am amazed to read Bigred though (in another thread) and realise I am 5 or so years older, when I would have guessed at 5 years younger - amazing what writing styles do for peoples perceptions of you.

1988 - I was in second year at Monash Uni Caulfield (it was still called Chisholm Institute of Technology)!
1990 - Turned 21. Left Uni to do a course and get a job in IT
1991 - Bought first new car
1993 - Met my future wife and moved in together in 1994
1995 - Bought our first house
1996 - Started our fur family (cat & dog) and got engaged and bought second new car
1997 - Changed jobs for the first time
1998 - Got married and bought another car
1999 - Changed job again
2000 - Moved to USA and bought 3rd new car
2001 - bought 4th new car
2002 - Had first child and moved back home
2003 - Changed job again and bought another used car
2004 - Rode the wave of the "Streak"
2005 - Changed job again
2006 - bought a 5th new car
2007 - Had second child
2008 - Building new house
The number 35 was the last number I have put on a footy jumper (over 13 years ago). I have bought jumpers since but never put a number on them.
I really do hope the Saints rest the jumper for a few years at least.

i was born 15 days or so after harvs' debut, in that time:
i have grown into an enviable human being who many look up too
i have been through primary and high school and are in my 2nd year of university.
i have had 2 cars, numerous love interests and stand this day as i was when i was born a st.kilda member and lover.
Robert Harvey, supporting st.kilda has been easy when the going has been tough because you have been around to show us that all is not bad.
we all love you and we will all miss you

Err, changed jobs twice. Raised 2 kids, brought and sold umpteen cars, retired from cricket and basketball, brought and sold 3 houses, 2 dogs and 3 cats have lived their entire lives!!, nephews and nieces have grown up and got married, and one has just had their 2nd child. Sheesh, so much has happened whilst Harvs has been playing footy for us.
I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

I would have thought by the second year of uni that you would have been getting a bit of a handle on the old english language!fonz_#15 wrote: i have been through primary and high school and are in my 2nd year of university.
