Where would you like a new 25,000 capacity AFl stadium built

Post: # 612968Post hilairehinshelwood »

Seems a good idea to me, especially for those interstate games, like the upcoming game against Port. The only way to get a full stadium. AFl lacks the variety of venues that other codes have, so this makes sense in that respect too. I would locate it somewhere away from the city but close to public transport. A transport hub like Box hill or Caulfield. Not Frankston though.

Optus Oval. Who wants to go there? It has transport/parking problems now, and I definately don't want to be giving one red cent of my hard earned to Carlton

Kardinia Park is in the country. Who would want to go there?

The NEW rectangular stadium is NOT suited to AFL footy

Is that enough?

I dont get why we need another stadium. Unless i am missing something the reason they are giving is because there will be extra games in melbourne because of the 2 new sides. Can someone explain to me how there will be extra games in Melbourne. There will be the same as there are now unless we increase the amount of rounds of footy otherwise it stays the same.

You do understand that the idea here is to make the ground small enough so that all that want to attend have to buy a reserved seat on top of their membership?

Part of my point.

If it was needed.
and the AFL wanted to build it.
They would try and soucre money off the state government.
So why couldn't they have made olympic park oval?

I think there is a glut of stadiums as it is in melbourne we don't need to be doubling up.

we need a 70k plus stadium before building a boutique stadium.

right now we have 9 clubs getting screwed over by 1 1/2 stadiums.

TD can screw clubs over as it has NO competition, the MCG is at capacity and doesn't want anyone else, so our choice is......nothing.

TD or the river.

They should knock down the houses at waverley and put the old concrete jungle back up. Might increase the rainfall again in the burbs as Waverley is in the 'rain belt'. The rain belt seems to have vanished since Waverley was torn down...

How many grounds have the AFL stopped playing at over the last 10-20 years? And now they want to build another one. What a shame we don't have a decent sized stadium somewhere close to the geographical centre of Melbourne. Oh, hang a moment, we did have one. Now it's someone's training base. The last thing we need is another ground close to the CBD. Has anyone tried catching a train after a game when there are games on at the Dome and MCG at the same time?

Good thought - wouldn't have occured to me, but I think you're onto something there.

Maybe because when North Melbourne or Melbourne plays Western Sydney the crowd will be so small that it would be far more viable to open the boutique stadium at Casey Fields rather than the MCG or TD.

I think you will find that 25,000 is the largest capacity that they would be allowed to build

When TD was built, the Govt signed a deal with them that there would be no more stadiums built for X amount of years with a capacity of more than 25,000..hence the initial capacity of the Rectangular stadium. Its increased capacity due to the popularity of the Viciory means that TD are being paid compensation AFAIK.

The club should move heaven and earth for the stadium to be located at Moorabbin.

It may sound fanciful at first, but there's a lot going for it location wise and space wise.

We could have our 'training' and social club base there as well. There's room to have it renovated and it fits in well with both the inner and the south-east demographic - it's less than 30 minutes from just about anywhere on that side of town.

The local council would dissolve any issues it currently has with the club like sugar into tea.

It's well serviced by a train line and has ample parking space.

A low-cost and easily upgradable 30,000 seat stadium - which generates the same amount of income as Geelong's does (when the debt has been paid off) - would be a godsend to Victorian clubs.

I believe the best location will be the Melbourne Showgrounds.

Play all of the "victorian vs interstate" matches there.

30k capacity

Design: Take Telstra Dome, chop the roof, remove level 3, replace level 2 corporate facilities with seating, ensure all seats are undercover. It would be more complex than this, e.g. I would have a steep angle on the stadium seats to get more people closer to the action.

That should give a 30k stadium with atmosphere as good as the dome.

However, the whole situation will be fixed with two words.

Double Headers
- Crowds can be increased (50k over 2 games rather than 25k at each game, would give neutrals more incentive to go to see two games)
- Better atmosphere due to increased crowds
- Catering/Staff/Setup costs are reduced

Was considered previously but knocked back.

In some ways it's not a bad idea, but it would cripple clubs and their hurt their 'branding'.

Besides, I'm there to see St Kilda and have a 'St Kilda' day - nothing else.

Port Melbourne is another possibility, showgrounds has lots of parking as well and a train station right there.

You seem to of forgotten who you are talking about here

The only thing less set up costs will turn into is MORE PROFIT for the AFL

The AFL are right where they plan to be, get rid of Waverly collect the premium on the land, then screw EVERYBODY involved in the game because we now have the power and position to.

Give the game back to the people you pricks and build a stadium that helps the fans of the game not your own bottom line.
