Very sad news.
But what an indelible memory he leaves.
If you can be a legend for one amazing feat, then he was a Legend.
They will still be replaying that footage long after we are all gone.
How many times have we all said "I was there the day Fehring ...."
The grandstand went ballistic after that kick.
(But I think it was Breen not Jezza at fullforward - bounced over his head).
My recollection was that we were a mile behind and despite a momentary lift went on to a sound loss.

Few like Fehring
FEW footballers are best remembered for one kick, but it's fair to say St Kilda's Jeff Fehring is, courtesy of the famous roost of his in 1981 when he booted a massive goal at Moorabbin, officials later measuring it as having travelled an amazing 86 metres (94 yards in the old measure) in a match against Collingwood. The record books tell us that Fehring, who died suddenly last week aged 53, was actually taking his anger out on the ball after being reported a few minutes earlier. But what is less known, though, is that the lumbering ruckman later insisted (admittedly after the odd beer at a club function) that he was actually trying to kick the goal (despite him putting boot to ball from behind the centre circle).

Fehring was a big man who made himself a cult hero with one extroardinary kick at Moorabbin. I was on the wing next to the players race, my usual haunt after I left the animal enclosure. From the wing it was a monster kick - SRS is right, the crowd just hushed as the kick went, and went and went. And, as one, erupted when the ball finally bounced through with a mighty roar. He tried to repeat the deed many times thereafter, but without success. A very sad passing of a much loved saints cult hero. Another great memory from the 80's - amazingly so many from such a woeful era. RIP JF. Deepest sympathies to his family.
I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

if you think Jeff (Jinka) Fehring could roost a footy a long way, let me tell you he could hit a cricket ball out of sight!
I spent a few years in the NE and played cricket agaist him, fortunately not as a bowler. He hit at least half a dozen or so of THE biggest sixes i've ever witnessed, and I'm an avid Aussie ODI and Test fan too!
Very sad to hear of his recent passing, and thoughts go to his family and Horefield mates
RIP Jinka

The Geelong release said "on behalf of Jeff Fehring's family"...so it may well be that they the family contacted the Cats where he started, and with whom he would have spent more time than the Saints.iwantmeseats wrote:absolutely piss poor from our club. In such circumstances as these, you would not want the Saints intruding unless asked.

I too am very saddened by the loss of Jeff Fehring. As a Collingwood supporter I was there that day when he kicked that mammoth goal. My brother was playing that day and it will certainly be a day I will never forget. I was sitting in, from memory, the G.G. Huggins stand.Con Gorozidis wrote:man. i was there at moorabin day of that kick - the only day i have ever been in the cheer squad behind the goal where it was kicked. i was about 7.
he cant be old. poor fella.
God bless Jeff.
RIP.

Also played for Norwood in the SANFL.
We are in difficult times with the continuing impact of drought and the impact of the very significant housing and equity market bubbles, where the sheer weight of debt invested into those asset bubbles adds to the plight of many and puts pressure on many others.
This consequence is sad beyond description and the only positive which can come from such a circumstance is community awareness and community support for those in difficult circumstances.
By community support, I mean the community acting to ensure the well being of our fellow citizens such that support is on offer far earlier than these tragic consequences.
These circumstances, predicated over the past 6 or 7 years by the growth of our Net Foreign Debt to over $600 BILLION will impact accross our society no matter the appearance of well being.
We need to all look out for others in times like these.
