"G Train's Career May be Over" - Fox story

Post: # 599599Post markinUSA »

Hi

I just found this story at the following site:
http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,865 ... 11,00.html

G-train's career may be over
By Stephen Rielly
July 07, 2008 FRASER Gehrig's arthritic hands may have already waved goodbye to football and St Kilda.

The former All-Australian forward and Coleman medallist is technically able to return to the St Kilda line-up after round 16, in two weeks, but is not expected to do so and by then the Saints, who have already introduced some of their next generation of players, should know whether they need to even consider a farewell performance for him.

Gehrig still has a splint on one of the fingers which was operated on in late May to alleviate the arthritis in his hands and while he has been doing a considerable amount of running he has yet to return to full training, making a comeback for the round-17 match against West Coast at Subiaco Oval on July 26 extremely doubtful.

St Kilda faces Carlton on Friday night and Hawthorn the following week. If the Saints, who have looked at Gehrig since he was forced on to the injury list as insurance in the event that either Nick Riewoldt or Justin Koschitzke get hurt, decide that by round 18 their campaign is no longer alive then it is understood that Gehrig's career will effectively be over.

(story then continues... see the link for the full story)

All the best in retirement, G-Train.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

His match against the Pies might have been his last unfortunately I'd guess.

In a way I'm glad I was at that game. He was awsome in his prime.

my greedy side cant accept the fact that the hero is leaving us, but i guess it a must. 'dammit why cant he stay young 4eva' i keep thinkin....
so not even the last 3 or 4 rounds of the year (not including interstate games) he could slip into the side? well i'll try and accept the fact that he has arthritice.

i remember his happy goodbye game when he had the footy when the siren went and kicked one last goal, if only that was his last.

Fras was at the SEQ function last week and no split on the hand then, maybe it was the warmer weather or maybe the journo doesn't know what he is talking about

At a pre-match dinner prior to the Freo game he spoke, and said he didn't expect to play again.

the Saints have looked at Gehrig as insurance in the event that either Nick Riewoldt or Justin Koschitzke get hurt
i'm certain he would have done no worse (and probably better) in terms of goals kicked than those two if he'd been left at ff.

whether he'd be able to play the "numbers behind the ball" gameplan or apply the "defensive pressure" considered so important is another thing altogether, however.

with riewoldt (and last week kosi) playing good football further up the ground it is an interesting one as to whether - even now - he'd be more effective at ff than allen.

i guess the answer is that the club must look to the future and allen is showing some promise.

G-Train has been a wonderful player for us, though, and it is a testament to the type of guy that he is that he will be ready to slot in should we need him in a season that isn't over yet.

Im certain if we were really struggling and out of finals reckoning that Fraser would probably play the last 2-3 weeks of the year. But IMHO the big fella himself would be the only one who would TRULY know how his body is and how his mind is and IMHO if he does hang em up for good it will be the end of a great carrer.

Sad day for the club. Hats off to a player who plyed through injury, and also bled for this club.

Will miss him greatly. Was always pure entertainment value.

Won't be the same now... no more yelling: GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG-train! when he takes a mark :(

The lid is off after Round 2! Enjoy the journey, coz you just don't know where we'll end up. Live for today and seize the moment.

Yep, great player, great person an ornament our club.

What a great opportunity to sack Barker and install Gehrig as interim Forward coach!

He should have kept his mullet.
Once it was gone so too was Fraze on the decline.
God bless the big fella.

I don't care about the article. While I was disappointed about Gehrig’s performance before he was dropped to the injury list (and not fully understanding why his form was down…but now I know…and understand) I think we won’t be seeing the last of him. I’d be placing the dollars on seeing him return and having a major impact. Wishful thinking??? Perhaps.

It’d be a sad way to see the big rig end his career otherwise!
