Need help re an arguement
Hi guys was after some help with an arguement im having with a Nth Melbourne supporter at them moment.
Since we beat them the other night his going on about how no other club has had more first round draft picks than St.Kilda. I know this is not true and from memory Collingwood maybe has more than us.
Was just wondering if any smart cookies on here could help me out so i can hammer this guy once and for all.
Cheers

Every club gets a first round draft pick every year
So we presume it is No 1 Picks.
Or do you mean priority picks? We have 2.

OK, according to the AFL lists, since the 2000 Draft (Roo and Kosi)
Saints have used 10 first round draft picks (including priority picks)
Kangaroos have used 10 also
Carlton have used 10 also (they lost theirs in 2002)
Hawthorn have used 12
Richmond have used 11
Western Bulldogs have used 12
This does not take into account any first round picks that were 'traded' (we traded first round picks for both Watts and Brooks)
It also doesn't take into account any players that were traded that were originally a first round pick to their original drafting club.

Hope this helps
The placings of teams at the end of the H&A season last ten years:
?? Year - 96-97-98-99-00-01-02-03-04-05
Freman. - 13-12-15-15-12-16-13-05-09-10 5 years in the bottom 4, 0 years in top 4.
Magpies - 11-08-14-16-15-09-04-02-13-15 5 years in the bottom 4, 2 years in top 4.
Hawtho - 08-15-13-09-08-06-10- 09-15-14 4 years in the bottom 4, 0 years in top 4
Richmon - 09-13-09-12-09-04-14-13-16-12 4 years in the bottom 4, 1 year in top 4.
Demons - 14-16-04-14-03-11-06-14-05-07 4 years in the bottom 4, 2 years in top 4.
Carlton. - 05-11-11-06-02-05-16-15-11-16 3 years in the bottom 4, 1 year in top 4
St Kilda - 10-01-06-10-16-15-15-11–03-04 3 years in the bottom 4, 3 years in top 4.
W Bulld - 15–03-02–04-07-10- 12-16-14-09 3 years in the bottom 4, 3 years in top 4.
There are plenty of teams who have performed worse than St Kilda - and most of these clubs have had their snouts in the draft trough longer than St Kilda. Singling out St Kilda is hypocrisy, especially Carlton supporters because they already have received more priority picks than St Kilda, and look set to stay there for ages yet, gathering more. (Well at least until they get rid of that outdated coach of theirs - the twenty first century just snuck up on Pagan didn't it?)
This was 2005 so maybe north could feel aggrieved but not at StKilda's expense

If your argument is with a North Melbourne supporter, then you should concede. Without doubt, they have done better with what they have been 'given' via the draft (or anything else) than most other teams. Luck, however, plays its part.
If you look at the team which won premierships in the last ten years, they divide, draft wise, (in my opinion ) into three categories.
1. Premiership largely as a result of high* draft pics.
2. Premierships partly due to high draft pics
3. Premierships unrelated to high draft pics.
Looking at the last ten years.
1998 2
1999 3
2000 3
2001 1
2002 1
2003 1
2004 2
2005 2
2006 1
2007 3
So, on balance, high draft pics tend to win out, but only just.
My view is that premierships are won by players ten to twenty on the list in a GF. You can get away with two who are no good, but not six, seven or eight, despite how good the top three or four are.
In 2004 and 2005, this was our final weakness. Because of injuries we needed to look to players 25, 26 and 27. They just weren't good enough. If you have a fluke year with next to no injuries (1995 being the stand out) then it just might work out.
* for my examples, a high draft pick is pick 1 to 5.

thats a great stat. thanks for that. and pretty much shows where teams are at. hawks and dogs with 12 are on top.
scary when u think we traded out 2 top 10's for 2 duds. and then we traded a top 10 (Fiora) inwards.
thats a poor strike record on those 3 trades.
