The umpires are seemingly responding to the call of many Saints fans on this forum and umpiring Jason Blake out of the game!
The last two weeks have been dreadful for our whipping boy! He has been called for a number of blocks, shepherds and holding-the-ball that have been suspect at best.
He got called for an in the back free on Saturday night and the very next quarter a North player does the same thing and, lo and behold, no whistle!
The free to Pavlich last week was one of the most deplorable decisions I've ever seen.
It's going to be a problem for Blake as he is not the most skilled player we have and has to work really hard to stay competitive. If the umps deem that his effort is outside the rules then it could be the beginning of the end!
Are the umpires doing what the coach won't?

blake has held down chb without missing a step since goose's injury.
for every fan who is down on him there is one who seriously rates him and he seems to be highly regarded within the playing group.
i'm not sure he can accurately be described as a whipping boy now.
interesting to see he ran almost as far as roo on saturday night. not too many guys of his size with that sort of endurance.
it is telling also that coaches as different in their outlooks as GT and RL rate him highly, so perhaps they know something that we don't.

the more that gram, bj and sam fish have played in the midfield has seen the importance (shudder) of jason blake
if and a big if he is able to hold down the 2nd tall back role this gives us a major advantage as our running backs will continue to run off their opponents and into the midfield for extended runs

Blake has improved over the last two years...
I also think that playing down back (with occassional roles as a run with tagger or even to spell someone briefly in the ruck) suits him best.
He has reduced the number of "brain fades"...and his spoiling skills have improved to a stage where he is now a very good spoiler..probably only behind Max. His disposal also seems to have improved. His running (including in finding space) and endurance were always very good....as was his great attititude and heart.
He is now a good steady player.
With Goose unavailable Blake's "standing" up as a key back is allowing Sam and BJ to be rotated through the midfield.
I really like the idea of Sam getting more midfield time....and Blakes' form down back is allowing this to be an option.

When we only have Max....Sam has often been drafted into being CHB/FB...
Blake is say playing CHB instead. Sam can be kept to run free as:
*spare man in defence
*back flanker
*mid
