Goddard needs to play Forward

Post: # 593563Post rama35 »

I Have not been a great fan of Goddards but i have been saying this since he has been back this year he needs to be playing a half forwards type of roll.
He is a good mark is one of the better kicks for goals at the club and reads the play quite well, playing him out of the back pocket is a joke,he does panic a fair bit and does give away silly free kicks.
Ross Lyon please give the boy a go and a bit of freedom and push him forward,he did take a nice mark in the goal square on the weekend and it bought a smile to my face but then he ran back to the back pocket.
He is playing out of position.
Good luck Saints this week against North Melbourne.

Obviously not a close observer of the game. Goddard panics?? Not a big fan?? This young man is a potential captain. His coolness under pressure is a trademark of his game. Can play a number of positions with ease. Magnificently skilled, has a much stronger body these days and directs traffic for us superbly. Probably a Buckley type mid-field role beckons for him. Right now he is being used where we need him the most as he is one of our top players now.

On a wing at least. he can be alot more damaging up the ground that is for sure.

But who do we replace him down back with and that s why he plays down there.

I'm sure RL would love him up the ground also but the way we have been playing he may be wasted in the forward line, very sad fact.

Midfield and could easily slot into the forward line.

Well champ - I did. He has given away 15 frees in 11 games - err.. now that's the grand total of 1.36 frees against per game. When you think he has laid 18 tackles thus far this year - that's more than acceptable. Calmness under pressure is also indiicated by the way you dispose of the ball - he has been (as always) exceptional in that regard. So, try again pal.

Look - is Hayes a midfielder?? He's got more frees against, so to Ball and King - midfielders by any chance?? Milne and Blake have also spent equal amounts of time in midfield - also have more frees against. So to Gram!! Get the picture. You made a statement and declared it as fact. Goddard panics under pressure?? Yep, whatever. I'm going back to work.

only played back pocket for 3-4 games this year when we were struggling for backline height. Looks alot better in the past 3 weeks when he plays as a midfielder who can float back and forward. Awesome contested marker for a midfielder and can only improve.

Not a lead up forward, nor is he a back flanker. Needs to work on his tank but is getting to morew contests and working hard up and down the field.

BTW on those frees, alot was when he was one out in the defensive goal square. Most backman when not given support struggle with those situations, let alone a tall midfielder forced to play full back.

Yep. Exactly. Nothing to do with panicking at all. Just moving his career into the next phase where he is now becoming a bona fide star of the AFL. Will be a champion by the time he retires after 300 odd games at StKilda!!

Needs to start on a wing and push into the forward line as he did on Friday night, this was very effective as he created another marking option up forward.

Mark my words ladies and gentlemen, he will be a magnificent Buckley type player and will captain the club to a premiership.
