ST KILDA onballer Nick Dal Santo looks like becoming a high-profile casualty of his side's struggles, being dropped for Friday's match. After the Saints' loss to Sydney last weekend, coach Ross Lyon promised that he would give younger players the chance to make good in place of struggling veterans.

The silky-skilled midfielder has played 114 matches in a row and was the Saints' leading vote-getter in last year's Brownlow Medal count.

However, it looks like he may be the first victim of Lyon's desire to shake up the team. Dal Santo collected just 17 touches against the Swans, at just 59 per cent efficiency.

St Kilda has lost four of its past five matches and a loss to Fremantle tomorrow night could signal the end of its finals hopes.

Should be looking at guys like Schneider who have failed to perform on a weekly basis, rather than Dal Santo.

I suspect that it's a message to the other players, that nobody is sacred.

Watch Dal get 40 posessions and 4 goals this week for Casey.

People continually talk of dropping players of the ilk of Schneider & co but for too long this season Dal Santo has been out of form & seemed to be continually allowed to rest on his previous deeds.

For mine the likes of Dal Santo & Kosi came to us as good players & were expected to be great, but to date have neither have reached great.

I think by Dropping Daly Santo will give him the wake up him the wake up call he needs, hopefully it motivates the other players but unlike others I think it is more a statement to the man himself rather than Daly Santo being a scape-goat rest of the team..

so the coach drops a player because the coach is unable to coach him properly and effectivly....

Agree that there are plenty of players in the side not performing as well as Dal.

But Dal is also cruising, and failing to deliver what he is capable of.
Whilst a guy like Blake is busting his guts trying, even if his skills aren't up to it.

This is a "line in the sand" move from Lyon.
Everyone needs to play to their own capability, not just match what teammates are doing.

I fully support this.
And other players need to be told that they are playing for their place on the list next year.

Whilst it obviously is borne out of frustration and almost desperation, it is an appropriate response given our plight.
Good move from Ross.

I am NO fan of Lyon however I think it is a good move to drop Dal..

I would assume Dal would have known he is out form & hence would expect that he cannot rest on his laurels. When there are other players on the list that atleast deserve the chance to prove themselves..

If a coach cannot drop a player so that that player can find form, the motivation he is lacking or the missing link to why he is out of form, how can that player ever expect to improve??

Love Dal, everyone does, but these line in the sand moves can be VERY beneficial for a player who is as naturally talented as Dal. Bit of an insult to Dal when there are worse in the list but if it sparks him up then Ross is a genius (unlikely as it seems).

It sends a strong message about work ethic. And its the first time i have felt Ross is stampping himself as the leader of the group.

clearly no where near as good as the arm waving of schneider.

also Dal Santo has a terribly habit of driving the ball forward instead of looking for a safe option 20 or so metres behind him.

also Dal Santo has proven to be 5 times the player Ross Lyon ever was and thus unsuitable for the st Kilda game plan going forward.

what we need are more people who can kick the ball 20 to 30 metres, tackle ferociously the player who has already disposed of the ball, and have 100% accuracy when kicking backwards to a defenceive player.

blatant tactical errors in shepherding for Luke ball instead of letting bally get cleaned up while running forward shneider style.

Also dal Santo has shown affection and personality towards st kilda fans and members and has been known to smile and laugh with the kids at family days.

this blatant display will be stopped at the earliest possible time.

Players must appreciate that a doleful face is part of the doleful phuccking game plan and must act in accordance with this on and off the field.

Goth dancing lessons will be provided free at the st kilda social rooms for all players.

its these things that St Kilda will base their play on going forward over the next 10 years.

i actually thought he philosophy was "Reputations mean nothing", as he continually states

in that case, would any coach in their right mind drop Player A who averages 22 disposals, 4 tackles a game and has had 15 goals+goal assists this year?

maybe next Ross will make Schnieder captain - there a real shining example of hard work and sterling form for everyone to follow. Dal be sure to take note of Schneiders highlights real over the last month - should take you all of about 20 seconds.

The G Train has been back for a go in the twos and accepted it. I think Dal is big enough to use the opertunity to get some form up and going.

I agree, if your not giving it your all then you should be dropped, even if your name is Dal Santo, Ball, Reiwolt or Hayes. Unfortunately for Dal, he's not and for the most part the others in my list are busting their guts.

Dal has a history of being tagged out of big games and has not improved in that area regardless of silky skills etc etc. our midfield and team in general just doesn't get enough of the ball consistantly, and it is consistancy which is required. Some people are screaming for Gram to be dropped, but I noticed he was one of our very few hard triers and runners against the Swans.

Well, it's going to be very interesting to see the fallout and effect of this.

It's a big, bold move, and a statement to Dal and the rest of the team that "good enough isn't good enough". It also is the kind of move that smacks of a last resort.

It's always going to be a challenge for a coach of a team like the Saints where there are players who's talent means their average game is among the best on the team... how do you get them to perform consistantly at their best? If you don't does malaise seep in?

From where I sit right now, I wouldn't have even thought of dropping Dal... but if he comes back and plays at the top of his game for the rest of the year, it could turn out to be a turning point in Lyon's time at the Saints.

If it doesn't shake things up to good effect, it will increase the appearance of Lyon's isolation.
