Lets not be too eager to sack coaches and overeact to a loss

Post: # 583276Post thejiggingsaint »

We had King and Harvey missing. We were on the wrong end of poor umpiring. Our forwards missed vital set shots at crucial times. These were things that Ross Lyon had no control over. Time to just take a deep breath and regroup and prepare to get behind the team V Freo. There is no other course of action other than to stick together as a club and get up off our knees again ready for the next round!!!!

Ross Lyon is sorta like Mark Harvey.

Both looked great as assistants yet when given the top job well.....

yeh all very well to be perennially jolly and upbeat Jigster, but it can just be another way of having rose coloured glasses. We're crap at the moment and heading south, doesn't matter how many ways you try to dress it up.

Love your optimism Jiggster, but sadly, the time has come for this club to move onwards and upwards.

And we won't do it with the current man at the helm.

Our players don't respond to him. He's been at the club since October 2006 - we simply can't afford to waste any more time beyond this season with him in charge.

Before last week's gimme against Melbourne, I called for him to win 3 of the next 4 to keep his job.

I don't believe it was a harsh offering.

:x Lets get ONE thing straight  "JOLLY" I am not!!! after a game like that!!! I bleed as much as the next person when we lose the way we did yesterday. "Rose coloured glasses" :?: I don't believe that by rolling up me sleeves, picking meslf up from the deck and having another go is being "unrealistic" or looking at life through "rose coloured glasses" There are some who think that sacking another coach two seasons into his contract is the way to go. They are entitled to their opinion.
My motive in posting was to offer some thought ("original" or otherwise  ) on SOME of the reasons for the result, and how we need to hang in there with the club..."Unoriginal" ? possibly? do I give a hoot about what others think? ...YOU decide!
Hang on a minute.......why the bloody hell am I posting this? I feel no need to explain my opinions on here :D
See youse at the Dome next home game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS How many of you wore your scarves today while out and about????
THIS is when the real support is needed!!!!!

Jesus mate, that's support and a half...

I just hope that when people ask why, you say that you're doing it in support of your fellow supporters and the club, and hope that the current team and its coaching staff can be aware of what they are doing to such a passionate supporter base.

Everton, I wear me colours whatever the result. I enjoy the wins and I take me medicine when we lose. I am upset for days after a bad loss (ask me wife!!) I saw a dude last week when we played Melbourne, strutting around in a (brand new?!) Bulldogs bomber jacket, scarf, and baseball cap. Yesterday I saw another guy with head-to-toe Cats gear on.
Now thats their right to wear their colours..but me, I reckon such a thing has little class. after all anyone can wear colours when their team is winning! NOW my daughter!!! what a girl!!! Rocks up to our local cafe to meet me for coffee on the mondee after the Lions defeat with her scarf proudly and defiantly displayed!
I'll continue to post my "unoriginal thoughts" and apologise to no one for it!

Jigster, I'm sure I'm not alone in admiring your positive attitude and intent to really put the word support into supporter.
Have to say though that your stated 'reasons' for our loss sound like clutching at straws to me. They're barely a spit in the ocean of the malaise that we've been under all season and in spite of some talk about mentally soft players, I'm not seeing any great steps in the right direction from the coaching staff.
We've been piss poor all year, apart from occasional bursts of sunshine. You can only bounce up and down so many times with positive talk before it starts to sound like blind optimism, which I suppose is better than blind pessimism. Cold hard facts are that we're crap, devoid of confidence and not improving.

Jiggster, I am perpetually in awe of the magnificent support you offer the club we all bleed for, and am humbled by yuor ability to be at your best after a poor performance such as yesterday.

Unfortunately, after 30 years of following and supporting our club, for the first time ever I am calling for the sacking of a coach.

We have some real quality on our list and it is being wasted. For a club to prosper on the field everyone from the top down has to be rowing in the same direction, and the troops in the trenches need unwavering faith in the guy leading them - and that is clearly not the case for us. I am afraid that for the first time ever I am looking at our coach and trying to figure out what psotive quality (singular) he brings to the club.
I watched Nick Riewoldt repeatedly running up to a wing and back to the goal square yesterday, apparently guarding a piece of turf on the wing as the Dogs came out of defensive 50. He did his job well, as to the best of my knowledge the piece of turf didn't get a single stat. Unfortunately, when we were able to create turnovers our midfielders had little to kick to up forward as our forwards were all busy running back from the pieces of turf they mind when we don't have the ball.

I watched our players running beside the opposition ball carrier, repeatedly not going to the man to attempt to tackle or apply pressure. I watched our full back come to the bench 5 minutes before the end of the game, against his will, when the game was lost after having pl,ayed the entire match. He then went back on the ground with 3 minutes to go!

Jaryn Geary came to the bench in the last quarter and wasted approximately 1 minute as no-one appeared to know if he was supposed to be coming off or not. Our midfielders appeared to get no more than about 6 to 8 minutes at a time on the field before being rotated - how is anyone supposed to get any rythym or feel for the game in 6 minutes?

I am sorry, but yesterday I sat in a different location very close to our bench, and we looked rudderless! That starts and ends with the coach. When he leaves could he please give Barker a lift to Centrelink.

Sums it up. Rudderless it seems. Going in circles trying to play 'accountable' footy. Not calling for Lyon's head, but only because I think the destabilisation would be too much. Give him until the end of the year at least.

The thing that worries me is that the players seem to be playing with no joy at all - in fact there seems to be no real 'team'. Just a bunch of well payed players who are trying so hard to get the team out of the hole they are in they have lost there instincts and the love of the game.

Rebuilding is not the issue for me (at the moment) - I want to watch a game of footy where I'm proud of our team and coming home knowing we gave it a crack, and under the circumstances we could not have done better, with a "well done guys - we'll get em next time".

I don't come away feeling anything like that these days - I feel very flat and powerless. Watching other mid range teams having a crack is inspirational.

Ever since RL has been in charge I can't remember really enjoying a game like I used to.

You read my mind Peanut.

The instinctive play that people like Dal and Roo were drafted for has been "coached" out of them. Replaced by so-called "tactics" and "structures."

The teams playmakers need to be allowed to play their game, throw the shackles off and let them weave some magic, and the team will respond accordingly. In saying that, Roo needs to finish the hard work and kick the goals he's supposed to. :x

I just watched the replay and there is no way this team have any faith in LYON's coaching, there is no passion, no aggression, no belief, no leadership, no system going forward and no hope.

Saints - Please find someone with the smallest idea of preparing and AFL team, to win games !

This is a real important point from the peanut. I too, and im sure alot of you, havent enjoyed ffoty much at all since RL took over. In fact, I struggle to get motivated to even turn up anymore, but I do and always will.

Thing is MANY wont, and these days you CANNOT afford to have big attendance/membership numbers drop off. Its a too dangerous time in the AFL at the moment to be dropping big numbers, and believe me , under RL if he is there next year, it could be a disaster on the numbers front. Time to make the big call and start again before the hole is too big to climb out of!
