Set shots for goal
Who are the players you feel comfortable with, with ball in hand taking a set shot?
I have 3...Birss, Schneider and Fraze (when fit). The rest is a lottery.

Harvey (as long as not more than 30m), Ball (kicked one from 45 last week), Milne, Gehrig (as long as on the wrong side for a left footer) and McEvoy because he has never let me down yet.
I cannot believe that the captain never wants to have a shot at goal.
Kosi is a disgrace in front of goal.
Anyone out there play golf?
What do you do if your swing goes off? Practice, practice, practice.
The game is called football, why can these blokes not kick a football?

If Harvey's within 30m he should look to pass it to someone in the crowd three bleachers back directly between the posts! Goddard the same but he can try from 40m. Frase currently couldn't hold the ball long enough to drop it properly onto the boot. Milney I'd be happy to see play on and kick around the corner or over the shoulder if he marks outside the goal square. I can't remember what Roo's kicking for goal is like, but he obviously doesn't have fond memories. Lenny, love him, would rather him fake an injury and let the closest crowd member take the shot. Fergie's fitting right in as well!

Though these raw figure do not take into account where players are kicking from.

that's a 70 per cent accuracy rate, unless i've got my sums wrong.saintsRrising wrote:Justin Koschitzke 19.8
not bad.
now if we could just get him to lead a bit and take a few more marks we'll make a key forward of him yet.

to make the comparisons a bit easier.
percentage of goals per shot (2008 only).
15 GOALS OR MORE
25 goals - Stephen Milne (59.5%)
19 goals - Justin Koschitzke (70.3%)
18 goals - Nick Riewoldt (62%)
16 goals - Adam Schneider (62.5%)
LESS THAN 15 GOALS
12 goals - Fraser Gehrig (75%)
LESS THAN 10 GOALS
6 Shane Birss (77.2%)
7 Nick Dal Santo (66.6%)
7 Leigh Montagna (54%)
7 David Armitage (75%)
10 Luke Ball (71.4%)
10 Xavier Clarke (55.5%)
10 Jason Gram (50%)
11 Charlie Gardiner (80%)
12 Robert Harvey (50%)
i'd like to see percentages for fevola, franklin, brown etc.
i was surprised by some of ours.
a few mids (ball, armitage, birss and dal) are almost sharp-shooters and i'm guessing the reason they don't feature more on the goal-kicking is that they've always had roo and fraser up field and instructions to look for them.
i'd be encouraging anyone with a percentage of 60 or over to have a ping if they think they can make the shot.
roo is statistically not that bad but (judging from the number of times he off-loads) he is more comfortable not taking the shot. i guess that doesn't matter so much as long as it results in a goal for st kilda.

Fev's currently on 66.6% (40.20)
Brown's on 60.6 (33.22)
Franklin's lifted his to about 60% (50.33)
It has to be noted that looking at a single year goalkicking wise is only a measure of that year's success, not their goalkicking prowess - even in Franklin's case, the sample size is much too small (for example, a simgle week's kicking took him from 57% to 60%, Reiwoldt's numbers would have been even further affected over the 1 round - he was dead even with Kosi going into the weekend). The number's relevance comes as a comparison to their career number to tell you whether there's a significant improvement... which given a decent sample size probably tells you where those numbers will head unless there's a significant difference in other areas (e.g. Kosi playing FF permanantly wouldn't surprise by lifting his accuracy).
Things like missed shots really ought be published, there's a lot of attention given to it in discussions like this, but when you occasionally do see numbers in a champion data report or something, they're generally pretty even... I've seen all the above miss sitters this year, but the lack of their measure detracts from the ability to use any goalkicking stats as a projection... certainly can't claim I've seen every game every one of them's played.
For those who are really curious about it, you can get a bit of a picture by looking at forwards kicking efficiency and clanger counts... a goal is considered effective, a behind is not, and a miss on the full is a clanger. A high clanger count for a guy who doesn't pass off a lot tends to signify kicking worries, a low clanger count or lot of assists tends to represent a fairly reliable user of the ball... there's certainly no formula for it

I assume you mean Lockett - coz Plugger66aus conversion rates are a little harder to determine.
Anyways - from 1988 to 2002 Lockett kicked 1008 goals to 427 points or a conversion rate of 70.24%
But his best returns were St. Kilda v Sydney and Sydney v St. Kilda - might imply the shape of the SCG and Moorabbin favoured quick and direct kicking.
I have my doubts that he would be as effective today due to not being able to muscle the opposition (ala Kosi in the Goal square against Coll). It would be a pity if he was playing in todays competition - one of the leading lights of football would have been quashed /end rant

kosi's kicking this season stacks up favourably, but unfortunately the comparison with lockett ends there.
kosi, this ain't no dress rehearsal.
you've five years (maybe seven if you're lucky) to make a name for yourself and you'd want to start soon.
start leading and presenting and fulfill your undoubted talent.
I've never been too concerned about having Harvey in front of goal. Milne I'd back every time, Schnieder, Sam Fisher, Jason Gram too. Gehrig as well.
